Celebrating Twenty Years of Black Girlhood - - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Celebrating Twenty Years of Black Girlhood - - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

The album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill sold over 420,000 copies in its first week, received ten Grammy nominations (winning five). Celebrating Twenty Years of Black Girlhood: The Lauryn Hill Reader critically engages the work of Ms. Hill, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of the album . Beyond the album’s commercial success, Ms. Hill’s radical self-consciousness and exuberance for life led listeners through her Black girl journey of love, motherhood, admonition, redemption, spirituality, sexuality, politics, and nostalgia that affirmed the power of creativity, resistance, and the tradition of African storytelling. Ms. Hill’s album provides inspirational energies that serve as a foundational text for Black girlhood. In many ways it is the definitive work of Black girlhood for the Hip Hop generation and beyond because it opened our eyes to a holistic narrative of woman and mother. Twenty years after the release of the album, we pay tribute to this work by adding to the quilt of Black girls’ stories with the threads of feminist consciousness, which are particularly imperative in this space where we declare: Black girls matter. Celebrating Twenty Years of Black Girlhood is the first book to academically engage the work of the incomparable Ms. Hill. It intellectually wrestles with the interdisciplinary nature of Ms. Hill’s album, centering the connection between the music of Ms. Hill and the lives of Black girls. The essays in this collection utilize personal narratives and professional pedagogies and invite students, scholars, and readers to reflect on how Ms. Hill’s album influenced their past, present, and future.

The Feminine Ethos in C. S. Lewis's «Chronicles of Narnia» - Monika Hilder - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

C. S. Lewis, fantasy novelist, literary scholar, and Christian apologist, is one of the most original and well-known literary figures of the twentieth century. As one who stood at the crossroads of Edwardian and modern thinking, he is often read as a sexist or even misogynistic man of his time, but this fresh rereading assesses Lewis as a prescient thinker who transformed typical Western gender paradigms. The Feminine Ethos in C. S. Lewis’s ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ proposes that Lewis’s highly nuanced metaphorical view of gender relations has been misunderstood precisely because it challenges Western chauvinist assumptions on sex and gender. Instead of perpetuating sexism, Lewis subverts the culturally inherited chauvinism of «masculine» classical heroism with the biblically inspired vision of a surprisingly «feminine» spiritual heroism. His view that we are all «feminine» in relation to the «masculine» God – a theological feminism that crosses gender lines – means that qualities we tend to consider to be feminine, such as humility, are the qualities essential to being fully human. This book’s theoretical framework is Lewis’s own, grounded in his view of biblical thinking, as he was informed by writers such as Milton, Wordsworth, and George MacDonald, and in terms of the uniquely progressive implications for twentieth-first century cultural studies. This highly insightful and entertaining study of theological feminism in Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia will be compelling for anyone interested in children’s and fantasy literature, Inklings scholarship, gender discourse, ethical and spiritual discourse, literature and theology, and cultural studies in general.

Theology, Tragedy, and Suffering in Nature - Joel C. Daniels - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Theology, Tragedy, and Suffering in Nature - Joel C. Daniels - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

The discovery by Charles Darwin of natural selection as the principal mechanism of biological evolution sharpened the classical theological issue of suffering in the natural world. Darwin’s discovery revealed predation and starvation to be the engine of biological development. Theological responses to evolution within the Christian tradition have typically failed to come to terms with these features of biological evolution, focusing instead on romantic notions of nature or assumptions about the benefits of progress. As a result, many doctrines of creation have operated with a limited understanding of the created world that is their subject. As Joel C. Daniels shows, however, this shortcoming can be remedied by utilizing the ancient resources of dramatic tragedy in a theological vein. By drawing together a theological interpretation of tragedy and a scientifically accurate understanding of nature, a realist doctrine of creation can achieve a high degree of realism with regards to suffering, respecting the unique characteristics of individual experiences while situating them in a theologically meaningful frame of reference. The theological category of tragedy does not solve the problem of natural evil. However, it has the double virtue of attending closely to the specifics of the natural world and maintaining a principled tension between experiences of suffering and Christian claims about the possibility of redemption. This book thus makes a unique contribution to Christian theology by drawing on multiple disciplines to address this issue of existential importance.

Luther’s «Heliand» - Timothy Blaine Price - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Luther’s «Heliand» - Timothy Blaine Price - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

The 2006 discovery of the Old Saxon Heliand manuscript fragment (MS L) in Leipzig is conspicuous. Besides its proximity to Wittenberg, the Leipzig University Library – site of the discovery – was first dedicated by Martin Luther in 1545. Given this relationship between the Reformer and the discovery location, it seems possible that the Reformer once had access to an original version of the Old Saxon Heliand , perhaps as an aid in his efforts to render Biblical Hebraisms into vernacular German idioms at a time of budding German nationalism. Indeed, long before the Old Saxon epic received the name by which it is currently known, rumors arose about Luther’s possession of an ancient vernacular Germanic Bible with a Latin preface. Even so, the source and age of these rumors are enigmatic. Were these rumors merely a myth created by later Protestants to counter Rome’s denunciation of Luther as a heretic? Following the trail of the rumors’ sources, Luther’s Heliand untangles historical relationships between the builders of the Leipzig University Library and several of their students – all men who comprised Luther’s innermost circle of Reformation thinkers. In their student notes, letters to colleagues, and printed diatribes against the Church and the Empire, these men recorded vital hints regarding the timing and location of their own discovery of the ancient Germanic Bible. Dating of these published accounts indicates that already several years prior to its dedication by Luther, the fledgling Leipzig University Library housed a medieval codex with features identical to those of the extant Old Saxon Heliand manuscripts, in particular MS L.

Head Game - Andrew C. Billings - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Head Game - Andrew C. Billings - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

We are witnessing a sea change regarding mental health in sports media, led in part by professional athletes such as Michael Phelps, Kevin Love, Naomi Osaka, and Simone Biles, who are sharing their own experiences with mental illness, bucking stereotypes in which people experiencing mental health issues are condemned to unfulfilling lives. From quarterbacks to pitchers, power forwards to Olympic swimmers, athletes are increasingly using the mass media—including social media—to share their experiences with depression, anxiety, and other disorders. Head Game: Mental Health in Sports Media uses interviews with key athletes, leading journalists and sportscasters, and organizational and league leaders to show how media has been used—and could be used in the future—to advance greater understanding of mental health. Professional athletes describe their own experiences with mental illness, including the challenges and opportunities they encountered in the locker room, field of play, and mass media. The athletes, who represent a spectrum of professional sports, describe their decisions to disclose as well as their recommendations for current and future generations of athletes. Head Game highlights the crucial importance of such disclosures in challenging the context of professional sport where athletes are trained to be "tough" from a young age and any mental illness could translate into reduced playing time and even harassment. " Head Game represents the first book of its kind to tackle one of today’s most pressing public health crises, one that has been forced into the shadows for far too long, through the lens of sport. Billings and Parrott explore the key media moments in this movement, the storytellers who shaped them, the institutional response from leagues and teams, and the first-hand accounts of elite athletes who have struggled to bring mental health awareness to the forefront—all of which has come to shape how we talk about mental health today. This timely, well-researched and expansive volume offers a powerful compilation of perspectives from prominent athletes like Olympians Michael Phelps and Gracie Gold, to the NFL’s Brandon Bostick, to the NHL’s Corey Hirsch. In combating the silence, stigma, stereotypes and prejudice that have often plagued discussions of mental health, Head Game tracks the modern movement for mental health advocacy within the world of sport and beyond. I highly recommend this book to anyone teaching courses in communication, sport and society, as students will undoubtedly find the material engaging and relatable, as well as to any reader interested in mental health portrayals in the media. I suspect everyone who reads Head Game will find a story within it that they can connect to." —Leigh Moscowitz, Professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, University of South Carolina "For too long the discourse of ‘mental toughness’ has dominated sports culture, from the way we coach and train athletes to how athletes are covered in the media. Through interviews with elite/professional athletes who have publicly disclosed mental health issues, the sports journalists who cover their stories, and sports organizations’ own efforts to address mental health, Head Game dissects how dangerous this discourse has been, and creates much-needed awareness on an issue that has been stigmatized in our culture. Head Game humanizes athletes, reminding readers that gold medals, championships, million-dollar salaries, corporate endorsements, or super star celebrity do not immunize athletes against mental health struggles. Sadly, what is at stake is a matter of life or death. Head Game is required reading for all athletes, coaches, journalists, sports fans, or anyone who cares about the mental health and well-being of athletes." —Cheryl Cooky, Professor of American Studies and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Purdue University

Dostoevsky on Guadalupe Street - Rafael C. Castillo - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Dostoevsky on Guadalupe Street is a riveting collection of short essays on the impact of world literature—and Fyodor Dostoevsky in particular—on a young Latino growing up in Texas. For a searching mind attempting to find links and meanings in a dark world of fragmentation and despair, literary escape can be vitally significant. Grouped into short categories (from formative beginnings to politics and dystopia ), these essays provide a historic glimpse into a nascent group of Latino writers emerging from obscurity to form one of America’s newest voices. Latino writing is the fastest growing genre worldwide, and this excellent primer provides a quick study for undergraduates, graduates, and first-generation college students in journalism, education, literary studies, and the humanities. The essays are short, original, witty, and provocative—and easy to read. "Written in lucid, luminous, and engaging prose. Dostoevsky on Guadalupe Street is a surprising, probing, edifying tour-de-force that captures literary journalism at its quintessential best. A much-needed critical discourse on the status of literature in our changing society." —Maria Martha Brummell, Emerita, Associate Dean, Yale University; CEO of Catch the Next, Inc. (New Haven, CT) "In one of the piquant prose morsels that constitute Dostoevsky on Guadalupe Street , Rafael Castillo, an ardent aficionado of metaphor, notes that writing is for him ‘a roller coaster to self-discovery.’ Jouncing through topics including education, punctuation, translation, digitalization, and growing up on the West Side of San Antonio, exhilarated readers will also find themselves." —Steven G. Kellman, Professor of Comparative Literature, University of Texas at San Antonio; Author of Rambling Prose , The Translingual Imagination , and Redemption: The Life of Henry Roth , Among Other Books "When you open Dostoevsky on Guadalupe Street , you will enter a world where imagination rules. Castillo’s beautiful, captivating words and colorful images in Dostoevsky on Guadalupe Street bring to life la raza del Westside, who for too long were marginalized and left in the shadows. This is must-reading!" —Rogelio Saenz, Peter Flawn Professor of Geography, University of Texas at San Antonio; Author of Latinos in the United States: Diversity and Change and Opinion Writer for Latino Rebels and the New York Times "Rafael Castillo has the concentrated power of a razor-sharp miniaturist who captures the nuance and cadence of West Side San Antonio with ease and patience of one who has observed a world through ease, mystery, and grace." —Belinda Urdiales, Novelist and Writer with Aztlan Associates; Author of The Hidden Voice " Dostoevsky on Guadalupe Street is a compilation of essays, review, articles and op-eds that capture the life of Latinos in the Southwest with literary style and panache." —Julian S.
