Franz Rosenzweig’s Rational Subjective System - Alin V. Bontas - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Franz Rosenzweig’s The Star of Redemption is best understood as a rational subjective system, and as such, as the redemptive turning point in philosophy and theology in general. In asserting Rosenzweig’s essential commitment to a «new» systematic conception of thinking as the most basic, deepest, and comprehensive intellectual procedure, Franz Rosenzweig’s Rational Subjective System sheds light on the extensive method of the Star and shows it to be rooted in a fundamental rethinking of the methodological and logical-metaphysical resources of Kant, most especially of the transcendent metaphysics of the psychological, cosmological, and theological substances (i.e., the «threefold nothing», or entia rationis ). The true radicality and originality of Rosenzweig, Bontas claims, is the exposition of the «rational subjective» approach to substance and knowledge on the «logical form» of the hypothetical thought (i.e., the modal relation of logical consequence between original and non-natural ground and phenomenal consequence, that positively establishes the wholly final and non-ideal destinations of redemption), which valorizes the alliance between pure reason and revelation disrupted by the Kantian epistemology. The title, The Star of Redemption, indicates exactly this long rational and not exclusively mundane «new systematic principle» of coherent and reliable knowledge, which is ultimately shown to be «true» and «right» from a «self-examining» subjective perspective and thereby justified.

In the Beginning Is Philosophy - Brayton Polka - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

In the Beginning Is Philosophy - Brayton Polka - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Philosophy, when understood to embody the values that are fundamental to modernity, is biblical in origin, both historically and ontologically. Central to this idea is the question famously posed by Tertullian: What does Athens have to do with Jerusalem? The answer – as based on a comprehensive and systematic discussion of the key texts and ideas of Spinoza, Vico, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche – is that we can overcome the conventional opposition between reason and faith, between philosophy and theology, and between the secular and the religious only if we learn to see that, as Spinoza shows us, both philosophy (reason) and theology (faith) are based on caritas : love – on the divine command to do unto others what you want others to do unto you. Provided throughout is a commentary on how fundamentally different philosophy is in the Greek and in the biblical traditions (in Athens and in Jerusalem). Whereas Socrates argues that (human) desire and the (divine) good are contradictory opposites, Spinoza shows that it is human desire that truly constitutes the divine good of all. This book would be indispensable to courses (both undergraduate and graduate) in philosophy, religious studies, and the history of ideas – in interdisciplinary courses in the humanities, generally – that focus on the values that are central, both historically and ontologically, to modernity.

The Heart of Matter - Peter J. Mullan - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Heart of Matter - Peter J. Mullan - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Few fields in philosophy are so seemingly distant from ordinary human experience as theories of knowledge. How much information do we draw in from bodies outside of us? And to what degree do our perceptual and mental processes subjectify that information to the point of becoming non-objective? The Heart of Matter: Bridging the Kantian Gap in How We Know Things presents both a back history of current theories of perception and a plausible theory to span the gap between subject and object. This book begins with Sir Karl Popper’s theory of falsifiability, as a twentieth-century version of Kantian subjectivism. Before considering eighteenth-century transcendental philosophy, a look at both the empirical and rational theories that inspired Kant helps place his Critique of Pure Reason in context. This book highlights the developments in Kant’s thought, as he struggled to solve important problems within his Copernican revolution. How far does Kant’s theory coincide with our actual perceptual experience? Twentieth-century experimentation in perception sheds important light on human knowing. The Heart of Matter follows Cornelio Fabro’s study of those psychological findings and especially his ability to incorporate those findings into a coherent description and explanation. Many current theories of knowledge dismiss any possibility of our objectively knowing bodies outside of us; this book takes a candid look at both the major dilemmas implied in such a dismissal, as well as our actual perception of things. On this account, a fruitful exchange does appear to take place between the mind and reality in perception. "This book is a clear and brilliant contribution to the philosophy of knowledge. Through a detailed study of Cornelio Fabro’s theory of knowledge, involving modern advances in psychology of perception, the author convincingly bridges the problem of the gap between senses and thought. The key-point in this volume is the importance given to sensations integrated in perception and penetrated by the intellectual grasp of the world around us. I recommend this book both to scholars and students. They will enjoy the elegant and fresh style which makes its reading very pleasant." —Juan Jose Sanguineti, Professor emeritus, Faculty of Philosophy, Holy Cross University (Rome)
