Education for Total Liberation - - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Education for Total Liberation is a collection of essays from leaders in the field of critical animal pedagogy (CAP). CAP emerges from activist educators teaching critical animal studies and is rooted in critical theory as well as the animal advocacy movement. Critical animal studies (CAS) argues for an interdisciplinary approach to understanding our relationships with nonhuman animals. CAS challenges two specific fields of theory: (1) animal studies, rooted in vivisection and testing on animals in the hard sciences and (2) human-animal studies, which reinforces a socially constructed binary between humans and animals and adopts abstract theoretical approaches. In contrast, CAS takes a progressive and committed approach to scholarship and sees the exploitation of nonhuman animals as interrelated with oppression of humans based on class, gender, race, ability, sexuality, age, and citizenship. CAS promotes the liberation of all animals and challenges all systems of domination. Education for Total Liberation is appropriate for undergraduate and graduate level readers (and beyond) who wish to learn from examples of radical pedagogical projects shaped by CAS and critical pedagogy. Contributing to this collection are Anne C. Bell, Anita de Melo, Carolyn Drew, Amber E. George, Karin Gunnarsson Dinker, Sinem Ketenci, John Lupinacci, Anthony J. Nocella II, Sean Parson, Helena Pedersen, Ian Purdy, Constance L. Russell, J.L. Schatz, Meneka Repka, William E. Shanahan III, and Richard J, White.

Children, War and Propaganda, Revised Edition - Ross F. Collins - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Children, War and Propaganda, Revised Edition - Ross F. Collins - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

A troubling development of the brutal century recently passed has been the growing use of children for war. World War I became the first "total war" of modern times. To engage in war on immense scale authorities believed everyone must participate. That included children. Relentless campaigns of propaganda in both world wars focused special attention on kids. The immense scope of total war grew to dominate children’s lives, their daily existence militarized by a world preoccupied by conflict. But we have often ignored wartime contributions of children. What were they expected to do? How were they persuaded to do it? How did it contribute to the war? In what ways did it affect their lives? What did they think about that? This history attempts to respond by examining activities of home-front children in the United States during both world wars. This revised edition considers recent research to extend the discussion of children’s experiences in war. It includes an examination of comic books, considers fitness standards, and discusses Boy Scouts and other groups for children. It also moves the work beyond the United States to consider activities of children in twenty-first century wars, as observers and, tragically, as participants. This fully referenced text is of interest to students of war and childhood. But, it is also written for a general audience interested in how children respond to war. Many Americans experienced war as children, and many others have parents who did. This book is also for them.

The Gothic Language - Irmengard Rauch - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Gothic Language: Grammar, Genetic Provenance and Typology, Readings , now in its second edition, is designed for students and scholars of the oldest known language with a sizeable corpus, belonging to the English, German, Dutch, and Scandinavian language clade. The Gothic language is seminal to the history of the study of each of these languages. Gothic grammar is a standard text in courses on Indo-European and general linguistics since Gothic serves as the prototype Germanic language in the study of historical comparative world language typologies. Particularly pan-Germanic is the innermost core of the grammar, the genetic phonology, which is reconstructed within the most recent approaches of laryngeal and glottalic theories. Most challenging to traditional viewpoints is the total novel restructuring of Gothic synchronic phonology via current theoretical approaches such as underspecification theory and optimality theory. While the Gothic inflectional morphology is rendered in full paradigmatic display, its understanding is enhanced by the application of underspecification theory and the use of inheritance networks, a computational linguistic concept. Brief "Syntactic Considerations" concluding the grammar present a network of head-driven phrase structures. This book also brings the reader into the ambience of the fourth-century Goths. Readings from the Wulfilian Bible, the extant eight pages of the Skeireins, together with a glossary, definitions of linguistic technical terms, a bibliography, and an index complete this volume.

Transmedia and Public Representation - - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Transmedia and Public Representation - - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Is media changing the way we see transgender people or is it the other way around? In the past twenty to thirty years, transgender people have gradually appeared in films and television shows with more and more frequency. However, more visibility does not always translate to a higher degree of acceptance of trans people. Authors in this book studied the most popular programs and movies of all times to see how much (and how little) media portrayals have changed when it comes down to trans folks. Although in recent years openly transgender celebrities and fictional characters have broken into the mainstream to challenge hegemonic understandings of this population, productions such as Transparent and Orange Is the New Black fall victim to commonplace portrayals, repeating the negative tropes they were trying to resist. Nevertheless, nuanced interpretations and thorough analyses from this collection show evidence that movies and programs with transgender people make progress from total erasure or invisibility. Transmedia and Public Representation: Transgender People in Film and Television is as complex and diverse as the authors, productions, and characters in it. It is a must-have, must-read book for anyone who studies or works in areas related to media, social sciences, and LGBTQ studies and activism. But it is also an appealing invitation to understand the current media landscape through the eyes and voices of trans and queer people, their relatives, and their allies.

The Concept of the Soul in Marcel Proust - Bette H. Lustig - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Concept of the Soul in Marcel Proust - Bette H. Lustig - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

The concept of the soul in Platonic, Ciceronian, and Talmudic thought segues into the Celtic tradition, Thomas Aquinas, and Maeterlinck and threads its way through the tapestry of Proust’s narrative and his principal characters. Bette H. Lustig uses a hermeneutic approach to the Proust texts, which are cited in French, and provides the analyses of the texts in English. Themes treating the soul include metempsychosis (transmigration), imprisonment and deliverance, eroticism and sadism, homophilia and misogyny, and time and memory. Moreover, the Celtic tradition is evident in the metempsychosis of souls to plants, animals, and inanimate objects, and their yearning to be delivered through a random encounter. Homophilia and misogyny are pendant themes. The strong preference for male company is articulated through gestures and choices by both author and characters. In Proust, homophilia leads to misogyny: disparaging, controlling, even abusive attitudes toward the souls of women, which are demonized and imprisoned. Their souls, provisionally free in sleep, do not reach total deliverance until death. The ecstasy of Platonic mystical union is shown only between two males. The soul of time travels at its own pace: by urgency, by seemingly slow passage, in narrative interruption or digression, chronological inversion, and in privileged moments. The soul of memory is present in odors or fragrances. Like Aquinas’s substratum soul, it connects past and present. Its enemy is forgetfulness. Time and memory are also correlated in collective memory. Presented in a clear, lively style, this book would be excellent in courses on Proust, French literature, religion, philosophy, psychology, and sociology.

Understanding Sun Tzu and the Art of Hybrid War - Zia Ul Haque Shamsi - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Understanding Sun Tzu and the Art of Hybrid War - Zia Ul Haque Shamsi - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

The concept of hybrid warfare is as old as warfare itself. However, it has re-emerged with an expanded scope in the twenty-first century. The purpose of the entire campaign is to break the will of the people and win the war without fighting. The modus operandi of the planning and execution of today’s hybrid warfare, particularly against unequal military powers (UMPs), is very similar to the precepts of the Chinese sage, Sun Tzu, who prophesied of winning the war without fighting. An analysis of Sun Tzu’s The Art of War reveals that he was a proponent of expanding state’s influence without the use of force. Inspired by Sun Tzu’s precepts, this author is proposing that states may acquire power for the promotion of peace within and peace without, as opposed to classical realism which insists on power and security. The sustained period of peace would enable the state to concentrate on economic development and societal progress. The same would help the state in perception management and project its soft power among the comity of nations. Such a state would then have the capacity to help develop other regional countries to expand its area of influence. However, the states that use their hard power to subdue other nations not only violate Sun Tzu’s dicta; but also end up spending huge resources, cause total destruction of the target state, and yet are unable to maintain a sustained occupation in contemporary international system. In view of the continued relevance, this author attempts to rediscover Sun Tzu’s precepts from The Art of War and its application in today’s hybrid warfare, deploying deductive reasoning, and qualitative analysis of contemporary wars and conflicts.
