Conor Niland has delivered an all-timer for tennis and sports journalism'' Ashlee Vance ''Conor Niland may only have managed a career-high ranking of 129 – only ? that is some achievement in itself! – but The Racket, his account of how he managed this, is up there with the best half-dozen books on tennis ever written.'' Geoff Dyer ‘Genuinely such a brilliant book, a brilliant read’ Ciarán Murphy, Second Captains Podcast ‘One of the best Irish sports books of the last decade’ Kieran Shannon, Irish Examiner ''If it''s not a contender for Sports Book of the Year, the world has gone mad.'' Fionn Davenport, Off The Ball ---- When Conor Niland was 16, he got the chance to hit with Serena Williams at Nick Bollettieri''s famed tennis academy. Conor, the Irish junior number one, was feeling a bit homesick. Serena, also 16, already owned her own house beside the academy.Conor Niland knows what it''s like when Roger Federer walks into the dressing room ( ''Ciao, bonjour, hello!'' ), and he has had the exquisitely terrible experience of facing Novak Djokovic in the world''s biggest tennis stadium - while suffering from food poisoning. Sunday Independent'' A crushing reminder of the grist from which sporting greatness emerges'' The Economist ‘A visceral, melancholy and often self-lacerating book … History is usually written by the winners, but this intelligent, unvarnished, emotionally draining memoir shows why an also-ran’s perspective can be just as valuable’ Andrew Lynch, The Business Post ''A brutally honest assessment of his career and the effort it took to take him to the margins of the world’s elite.'' Where Angels Fear to Tread - E. M. Forster - Bog - Penguin Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Where Angels Fear to Tread - E. M. Forster - Bog - Penguin Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

E.M. Forster''s Where Angels Fear to Tread is amongst the greatest twentieth-century literary explorations of vice, virtue and the nature of prejudice, edited with notes by Oliver Stallybrass and an introduction by Ruth Padel in Penguin Classics. On travelling to Italy with her friend Caroline Abbott, the impulsive English widow Lilia Herriton outrages her dead husband''s family by meeting and quickly becoming engaged to Gino, a dashing but deeply unsuitable Italian man twelve years her junior. Infuriated, her ex-brother-in-law Philip sets off from England to her new home in the Tuscan town of Monteriano - but, finding himself unable to persuade Lilia to leave her handsome, uncouth new lover, returns to England without her. When Lilia''s marriage leads to sudden tragedy, however, Philip and Caroline feel compelled to return once more to Italy, where they are forced to examine their own lives. This edition reproduces the Abinger text, and also includes further reading, notes, a chronology, an introduction by Ruth Padel discussing division and culture clash in the novel and an appendix detailing an exchange about the novel between Forster and the poet R.C. Trevelyan.E. M. Forster (1879-1970) was a noted English author and critic and a member of the Bloomsbury group. His first novel, Where Angels Fear To Tread appeared in 1905. The Longest Journey appeared in 1907, followed by A Room With A View (1908), based partly on the material from extended holidays in Italy with his mother. Howards End (1910) was a story that centered on an English country house and dealt with the clash between two families, one interested in art and literature, the other only in business. Maurice was revised several times during his life, and finally published posthumously in 1971.If you enjoyed Where Angels Fear to Tread , you might enjoy Forster''s A Room With a View , also available in Penguin Classics.

The Long Recessional - David Gilmour - Bog - Penguin Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

''Superb, beautifully written, touching and occasionally very funny'' Andrew Roberts David Gilmour''s superb biography of Rudyard Kipling is the first to show how the life and work of the great writer mirrored the trajectory of the British Empire, from its zenith to its final decades. His famous poem ''Recessional'' celebrated Queen Victoria''s Diamond Jubilee in 1897, but his last poems warned of the dangers of Nazism, and in those intervening years Kipling, himself an icon of the Empire, was transformed from an apostle of success to a prophet of national decline. As Gilmour makes clear, Kipling''s mysterious stories and poetry deeply influenced the way his readers saw both themselves and the British Empire, and they continue to challenge us today.''A fine, fair and generous work ... Gilmour''s celebrated life of Curzon demonstrated his mastery of imperial nuance and esoteric character, and he brings to this book just the right combination of empathy, distaste andfastidious detachment ... there is never a flaccid line, and never a hasty judgement'' Jan Morris, New Statesman ''Every now and again a book comes along that sheds new light on a life we thought we knew. David Gilmour''s beautifully-written biography of Rudyard Kipling is just such a work ... This is literary biography at its very finest'' George Rosie, Sunday Herald ''An enthralling biography of a mind ... essential reading for anyone who cares about how a writer finds, and passionately lives, his subject'' Ruth Padel, Daily Telegraph ''The best Kipling biography yet written ... Gilmour''s account of this driven man shines with intelligence'' J. B. Pick, Scotsman
