Sharpshooters at War - Daniel Taylor - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Sharpshooters at War - Daniel Taylor - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

A little regarded period of history, the inter-war years were crucial in forging the spirit and ethos of the Sharpshooters. At the time they were little more than a company-strength unit of the Territorial Army based in West London, with few resources, a paltry assortment of vehicles and a drill hall that had seen better days. What they did have in spades was spirit and enthusiasm. These were ordinary men in regular jobs from across London who were mainly seeking a little action and adventure at the weekend. As with any good military unit they had that extra spark that made them stand out. This account details their training, their summer camps, the routine, and their equipment. Most of all it looks at the individuals who made up the unit and made it tick. The 23rd (London) Armoured Car Company (Sharpshooters), as they were styled, was a leader in innovation and excellence, often called upon to train with the regular army. They provided escorts for food convoys during the General Strike, performed at the Royal Tournament, provided honour guards for Jubilees, Royal funerals and Coronations, and took on all manner of sporting activities, including two very active rugby teams. Towards the end of the 1930s they had begun to gear-up for war long before it became an inevitability, constantly recruiting over-strength and hiding the figures from their reluctant paymasters. When, at last, the likelihood of war was acknowledged they swiftly returned to full regimental strength and then immediately started raising a second line regiment.

Champion Jump Horse Racing Trainers - Neil Clark - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Champion Jump Horse Trainers tells, for the first time in one volume, the fascinating story of the 19 trainers who have reached the top of the National Hunt tree in the post-war period. It includes exclusive interviews with the surviving champion trainers and fresh insights from friends, colleagues and family members of champion trainers we have sadly lost. Filled with anecdotes about some of the greatest characters of the sport, like Captain Neville Crump, Captain Ryan Price and David ''The Duke'' Nicholson, the book is the follow-up to Neil Clark''s very popular Champion Jump Horse Racing Jockeys: From 1945 to Present Day (also published by White Owl), described in the Spectator magazine as ''worth space in any racing library''. While the book will be greatly enjoyed by jump racing enthusiasts, it is of wider appeal too as it is an entertaining social history of how Britain has changed since 1945.In the first half many of the trainers featured were from a military background, and invariably from the officer class. They ran their stables along strict military lines. But later on, a new breed of champion trainer emerged, like the remarkable Martin Pipe, the son of a bookie, who broke all the records existing up to then. The book comes right up to date featuring successful currently operating champions such as Paul Nicholls, Nicky Henderson and Willie Mullins and attempts to answer the question ‘what makes a champion trainer’?And of course there''s the horses. The pages and photographs remind us of some of the best-loved jump horses of the last eighty years, like Sea Pigeon, Desert Orchid and Kauto Star, as well as some names that have been forgotten. Like Champion Jump Horse Racing Jockeys, Champion Jump Horse Trainers will be a must for any racing library.

RAF in Camera: 1980s – The Later Years - Keith Wilson - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

RAF in Camera: 1980s – The Later Years by Keith Wilson provides a visually rich account of the Royal Air Force during the transformative latter half of the 1980s. This continuation of Wilson’s earlier work examines the RAF’s operational and technological evolution during a pivotal decade for British military aviation. The period witnessed the retirement of iconic aircraft like the English Electric Lightning in 1988, symbolizing the end of a Cold War era. Simultaneously, the RAF introduced advanced platforms that redefined its capabilities, including the Tornado F.3 Interceptor, Harrier GR.5, British Aerospace BAe 146 CC.1, and Tucano T.1 trainer. Additionally, the innovative conversion of Lockheed Tristar and Vickers VC10 airliners into aerial refuelling tankers replaced the aging Victor K.2, enhancing the RAF’s strategic reach. Year-by-year coverage explores milestones such as the post-Falklands War recovery of military confidence and the integration of cutting-edge technology into RAF operations. Illustrated with numerous photographs, the book captures the RAF’s modernization and the cultural shifts within the service. Meticulously researched, RAF in Camera: 1980s – The Later Years offers aviation enthusiasts and historians alike a detailed exploration of the RAF’s evolution, blending iconic imagery with insightful analysis of this critical period in its history.

Last Stand at Le Paradis - Richard Lane - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

In early September 1939, the 2nd Battalion Royal Norfolk Regiment were one of the first complete infantry units of the BEF to land in France. The first months of World War Two were relatively quiet but after deploying to the Maginot Line sector during January 1940 they came into contact with those Germans manning the West Wall or Seigfried Line. A patrol led by Captain Peter Barclay entered German territory and was attacked. As a result, the first decorations of the war were awarded. Barclay received the Military Cross and Lance-Corporal Davis the Military Medal while the remaining members of the patrol were mentioned in despatches. Two days later, the battalion suffered a tragic first when Lieutenant Patrick Everitt was mortally wounded while leading a daylight patrol. Everitt was the first British officer to be killed in action in the Second World War. When the Germans launched their offensive on 10 May, the BEF advanced to the River Dyle in Belgium. Within days the Allied Armies had been forced onto the back foot by the speed and ferocity of the German breakthrough. The Norfolks withdrew to the River Escaut where the BEF was to make a stand. On 21 May, the Company Sergeant Major George Gristock courageously destroyed some German machine-gun posts and won a posthumous Victoria Cross. As the Allies withdrew towards the Channel, the Norfolks were ordered to defend a section of the Canal Line between Bthune and Le Cornet Malo. Already down to around half strength, the Norfolks held their sector from 24 to 27 May. By the time the order was issued for them to withdraw, it was too late, Battalion HQ at Duries Farm, Le Paradis was surrounded and they had no alternative but to surrender, although C Company held out until the following morning. After the surrender, ninety-nine men of the Battalion were marched to a paddock where they were machine-gunned in cold blood by their SS captors. Miraculously, two men survived and were instrumental in bringing the SS officer responsible, Fritz Knoechlien, to justice after the war. When the remnants of the battalion reassembled in England, its strength was just five officers and 134 other ranks. The remainder had either been killed or captured as POWs.

The Dawn of Guerrilla Warfare - Benjamin J Swenson - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

While one military empire in Europe lay in ruins, another awakened in North America. During the Peninsular War (1808-1814) the Spanish launched an unprecedented guerrilla insurgency undermining Napoleon’s grip on that state and ultimately hastening the destruction of the French Army in Europe. The advent of this novel “system” of warfare ushered in an era of military studies on the use of unconventional strategies in military campaigns and changed the modern rules of war.A generation later during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), Winfield Scott and Henry Halleck used the knowledge from the Peninsular War to implement an innovative counterinsurgency program designed to conciliate Mexicans living in areas controlled by the U.S. Army, which set the standard informing a growing international consensus on the proper conduct for occupation. In this first transnational history of the Mexican-American War, historian Benjamin J. Swenson chronicles the emergence of guerrilla warfare in the Atlantic World. He demonstrates how the Napoleonic War in Spain informed the U.S. Army’s 1847 campaign in the heart of Mexico, romantic perceptions of the war among both Americans and Mexicans, the disparate resistance to invasion and occupation, foreign influence on the war from monarchists intent on bringing Mexico back into the European orbit, and the danger of disastrous imperial overreach exemplified by the French in Spain.

Guderian 1941 - David R. Higgins - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

During the first few weeks of Operation Barbarossa, Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, Heinz Guderian''s Second Panzer Group played a leading role, cutting through the defences on the border, then taking part in the massive encirclement battles near Minsk, Smolensk, and Kiev. The extraordinary speed of the advance reflects the experience of the Wehrmacht as a whole during the first phase of the war on the Eastern Front. That is why David Higgins’s graphic narrative, which describes how Guderian’s forces achieved enormous success before they were forced to halt, is such compelling reading. It is a fascinating story, vividly told.Drawing on a wide range of official German and Soviet records, he reconstructs the entire course of Second Panzer Group''s advance, covering each stage in unprecedented detail. His narrative offers a German perspective and an inside view of what the opposing commanders knew during each operation and shows how important logistics became as the German supply lines stretched deep into the Soviet Union. It also explains how Soviet resistance and reinforcements, declining strength and the onset of the Russian winter combined to bring Guderian to a stop at Tula where he was relieved of his command. The high hopes with which the German army had launched the campaign were dashed only a few months later before Moscow. This in-depth study the of operations of Second Panzer Group gives the reader a telling insight into what went wrong.

Sharpshooters at War - Daniel Taylor - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Sharpshooters archive has an incredible collection of over 8,000 photographs taken during WWII. Combining this with our Regimental records and numerous personal accounts, they tell a unique and fascinating story about the life of both the unit and the remarkable individuals who took served during the war. This second volume follows the development of both Sharpshooters Regiments from the phoney war to their first deployment overseas, two years later. The story is all the more compelling as they were made up of a blend of part-time soldiers, a smattering of professionals and numerous drafts of conscripts – ordinary people called on to do extraordinary things. 1.Forging the toolThis first section looks at the chaos of the first few days of war where the Regiment had to suddenly take on – and find accommodation for – two entire regiments in the centre of London. At that time this was the only armoured brigade entirely composed of Territorial troops – not that they had anything that might resemble a tank. 2\. Working UpWithin a few days they were sent to the West Country, around Ilfracombe, where they overwintered, whilst beginning the process of turning a motley but enthusiastic band of novices into an efficient fighting unit. Over the following two years we follow the story of the two regiments as they prepare for War3\. DeploymentAfter a final embarkation leave, the regiments were brought to readiness with additional personnel to bring them over strength before embarking at Liverpool.

We Also Served - Vivien Newman - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

We Also Served - Vivien Newman - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

We Also Served is a social history of women's involvement in the First World War. Dr Vivien Newman disturbs myths and preconceptions surrounding women's war work and seeks to inform contemporary readers of countless acts of derring-do, determination, and quiet heroism by British women, that went on behind the scenes from 1914-1918. In August 1914 a mere 640 women had a clearly defined wartime role. Ignoring early War Office advice to 'go home and sit still', by 1918 hundreds of thousands of women from all corners of the world had lent their individual wills and collective strength to the Allied cause. As well as becoming nurses, munitions workers, and members of the Land Army, women were also ambulance drivers and surgeons; they served with the Armed Forces; funded and managed their own hospitals within sight and sound of the guns. At least one British woman bore arms, and over a thousand women lost their lives as a direct result of their involvement with the war. This book lets these all but forgotten women speak directly to us of their war, their lives, and their stories. AUTHOR: Dr Vivien Newman, an expert on women's experiences during the First World War, works at the University of Essex. Dr Newman is also working on a collection of women's First World War poetry and a book on children's experiences during the conflict, both due to be published by Pen and Sword. She is a regular speaker at national conferences and for groups including the Women's Institute and the Western Front Association. 30 b/w illustrations

Penal Company on the Falklands - Philip Neame - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Penal Company on the Falklands - Philip Neame - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

On 1 April 1982 the Argentinian junta invaded the Falkland Islands, while the 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment was on leave. Recalled to barracks, it joined the hastily assembled task force to recover the Islands. No parachutes – instead a journey of 8000 miles on a North Sea ferry to deliver the battalion into battle. Philip Neame commanded D Company, one of the battalion’s three 100-strong rifle companies, and in this compelling book he tells their story. 2 PARA was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel ‘H’ Jones, who was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross at the Battle of Goose Green. After winning the first major land battle on the Falklands, 2 PARA were the only battalion to fight two, going on to fight at Wireless Ridge, the final gateway to Port Stanley. D Company played the decisive role, but, in the closing moments, suffered a deadly artillery barrage – from their own guns. D Company was the Cinderella of 2 PARA, at the back for everything: on training, always in reserve; in barracks, the parking lot for those who proved too troublesome for A and B. It was nicknamed ‘Penal Company’. This searingly honest but humorous account explores the realities of war – the tightrope between success and disaster, comedy and tragedy; the strength of companionship and the solitude of fear. Above all, it is a tribute to a band of brothers who, taking their nickname as a badge of honour, fought, cursed and laughed together, to win through on those ‘ringing plains of windy Troy.’Catalogue blurb (100 words)

Volunteers - Richard Van Emden - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Volunteers - Richard Van Emden - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

What greater pride might a young man feel than to serve shoulder to shoulder with his friends in time of war? To enlist into the army with his pals, chums, mates, filling the ranks of battalions that drew their strength from the local community, from amongst factory workers, miners, shop-workers and tradesmen. In August 1914, what more fitting role was there to play than to answer the country’s call to arms? The past is another country, of course: the world in which these men grew up and the mores that took them to the Western Front might appear innocent and naive today. The Somme battle eviscerated many of these free-spirited battalions. But the raising of this New Army – a purely volunteer army – lives on in the public consciousness, their collective story part of our heritage.Who were these volunteers who poured into recruiting offices, overwhelming the staff? What motivated these men – too often just boys - to join up? How did they feel about one another and the new military regime into which so many ran with enthusiasm, without much thought as to the future? After the success of his previous books, The Somme, The Road to Passchendaele, and 1918, best-selling Great War historian Richard van Emden returns to the beginning of the War with this, his latest volume, including an unparalleled collection of soldiers’ own photographs taken on their privately-held cameras. Drawing on long-forgotten memoirs, diaries and letters written by the men who enlisted, Richard tells the riveting story of Kitchener’s volunteers, before they went to fight.

Schweinfurt-Regensburg Mission: The American Raids on 17 August 1943 - Martin Middlebrook - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Schweinfurt-Regensburg Mission: The American Raids on 17 August 1943 - Martin Middlebrook - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

On 17 August 1943, the entire strength of the American heavy bomber forces in England set out to raid two major industrial complexes deep in southern Germany, the vast Messerschmitt aircraft factory and the vital KGF ballbearing plant. For American commanders it was the culmination of years of planning and hope, the day when their self-defending formations of the famous Flying Fortress could at last perform their true role and reach out by daylight to strike at targets in the deepest corners of industrial Germany. The day ended in disaster for the Americans. Thanks to the courage of the aircrews the bombers won through to the targets and caused heavy damage, but sixty were shot down and the hopes of the American commanders were shattered. Historically, it was probably the most important day for the American air forces during the Second World War.While researching this catastrophic raid the Author interviewed hundreds of the airmen involved, German defenders, 'slave workers' and eye witnesses. This took him twice to both the USA and Germany. The result is a mass of fresh, previously unused material with which the author finally provides the full story of this famous day's operations. Not only is the American side described in far greater depth than before but the previously vague German side of the story - both the Luftwaffe action and the civilian experiences in Schweinfurt and Regensburg, are now presented clearly and in detail for the first time. The important question of why the RAF did not support the American effort and follow up the raid on Schweinfurt as planned is also fully covered.
