Notre-Dame - Ken Follett - Bog - Pan Macmillan - Plusbog.dk

Notre-Dame - Ken Follett - Bog - Pan Macmillan - Plusbog.dk

The New Yorker – ''A treasure of a book'' Originally written in aid of the crucial restoration work to restore Paris’s great cathedral, Notre-Dame: A Short History of the Meaning of Cathedrals is a moving, short piece of non-fiction celebrating the stunning history of this beloved building, from Ken Follett, author of the multi-million copy selling Kingsbridge series. Now with an exclusive new introduction from the author. ‘Two days after Notre Dame burned, I flew to Paris to appear on the TV programme La Grande Librairie for a discussion about cathedrals. The following morning I had breakfast at the Hotel Bristol with my French publisher and she asked me to write a short book about Notre Dame and what it means to all of us. She said she would donate the publisher’s profits to the rebuilding fund and, if I wished, I could do the same with my royalties. Yes, I said; of course, I’d love to.’ – Ken Follett Praise for Notre-Dame:''Fans of Follett and cathedrals alike will enjoy his exploration of the great Parisian edifice—and will want more'' – Kirkus Reviews ''Follett’s appreciative tribute provides comfort that the scars of the recent fire will pass, as well. This satisfying book will be a must-read for those interested in the rebuilding of Notre Dame'' – Publishers Weekly ''Follett’s essay is simply masterful... Its stately and measured prose style befits its theme and makes it a great pleasure to read. This book is suitable for all libraries and will doubtless enrich any collection to which it is added. The fact that the author has pledged all proceeds from sales of the book to La Fondation du Patrimoine — a charity raising money for the restoration of the cathedral — only adds to its worthiness as a purchase and inscribes it into the ongoing history of Notre-Dame'' – Catholic Library World

A Mother's Courage - Malka Levine - Bog - Pan Macmillan - Plusbog.dk

''A deeply humane memoir of immense power - there is nothing more affecting than a first-hand experience finely told'' - Philippe Sands, author of The Ratline ''A fabulous memoir . . . a testament to [Malka''s] skill and determination'' - Dame Maureen Lipman A Mother’s Courage is Holocaust survivor Malka Levine’s powerful and moving tribute to a determined and resourceful woman who refused to give up hope so long as her children needed her. Malka was two when the Nazi invaders forced her family into the Jewish ghetto in Volodymyr-Volynskyi, a small city in present-day Ukraine. It was the first step in a campaign of mass murder. Of the 25,000 Jews in the city in 1939, only thirty would survive. Malka’s father was shot in the first pogrom. Before he died he begged her mother Rivka to save their children.Rivka kept Malka and her two older brothers alive through eighteen terrifying months, as the Nazis systematically killed the inhabitants of the ghetto. In the midst of the inhumanity, a few people risked their lives to help. A Wehrmacht officer saved them from being shot and a Polish dressmaker gave them sanctuary when the SS went hunting for victims. Then Rivka persuaded a Ukrainian farmer and his saintly wife to hide her and the children. The Yakimchuks agreed and kept their word, even after the SS commandeered the farm. They dug a pit under their barn, and there Malka’s family stayed through a freezing winter and into the summer until the Red Army came. At the end of the war, Rivka was forced to draw on her strength yet again as she set out to create a new life for herself and her children. A Mother’s Courage is Malka’s chance at long last to thank not only her brave mum, but also all the heroes who opened their hearts to her and her family.
