Doctoral Education in Social Work - Jeane W. Anastas - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Doctoral Education in Social Work - Jeane W. Anastas - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Doctoral education in social work is said to be in crisis. While there is a glut of available programs, there is a shortage of doctoral graduates for faculty positions in social work education requiring that the field prepare more high-quality graduates for these positions. There is also an increasing need for doctoral-level social workers in leadership roles outside of schools of social work, such as in think tanks, professional associations, public and organizational administration, and practice.Based on findings from a national survey of doctoral students in social work, this volume discusses the purpose of doctoral education in a practice profession, as well as past and current controversies about what that should be. Survey findings about student demographics and their reasons for seeking the doctoral degree are discussed in comparison to national data from related fields. In addition, their program experiences are considered and parsed, including specifics on what they like and do not like, such as the dissertation research and writing experience and preparation for the PhD job market. While most programs are designed to prepare stewards of the discipline, it turns out that the resources available in social work doctoral programs, including student aid, are quite variable. The book identifies a variety of recommendations that can enhance the profession''s ability to prepare the next generation of intellectual leadership. This is essential reading for anyone interested in or already working towards a social work doctorate, and for faculty and directors of schools of social work determined to understand and shape the future of doctoral education in social work.

School Social Work: An Evidence-Informed Framework for Practice - Michael Kelly - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

School Social Work: An Evidence-Informed Framework for Practice - Michael Kelly - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

School Social Work: An Evidence-Informed Framework for Practice offers school social work students and veteran practitioners a new framework for choosing their interventions based on the best available evidence. It is the first work that synthesizes the evidence-based practice (EBP) process with recent conceptual frameworks of school social work clinical practice offered by leading scholars and policymakers. Many other books on EBP try to fit empirically-validated treatments into practice contexts without considering the multiple barriers to implementing evidence-based practices in places as complicated and multi-faceted as schools. Additionally, there are vital questions in the literature about what the best levels for intervention (micro- or macro-) are in school social work. This volume will acknowledge the complexity of applying EBP in schools, and offer a conceptual framework that addresses the real-world concerns of practitioners as they struggle to provide the best services to their school clients. School Social Work: An Evidence-Informed Framework for Practice synthesizes these important and exciting ideas in school social work practice. Written by four school social work scholars with over four decades of theoretical, research, and practice experience, this volume will be relevant to both research faculty studying school social work interventions and students learning about school social work practice.

Ethics in End-of-Life Decisions in Social Work Practice - Ellen L. Csikai - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Ethics in End-of-Life Decisions in Social Work Practice - Ellen L. Csikai - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Modern medical technologies have given patients and their families new options at the end of life. These options are often accompanied by difficult medical and ethical questions. Ellen L. Csikai and Elizabeth Chaitin give social workers an expanded ethical base on which to ground their understandings and explanations of the end-of-life options available to patients and workers in healthcare environments. The authors connect long-standing philosophical theories to contemporary concerns in the field of bioethics. In addition to theoretical issues, the authors include case studies to show the complex end-of-life decisions faced by patients, families, and health care workers. In order to help make these decisions, Csikai and Chaitin discuss how to assess knowledge; create treatment and intervention plans; and cultivate empowerment, teamwork, and cultural sensitivity. The authors, experienced social workers, offer approaches for resolving debates about informed consent, privacy and confidentiality, and the refusal or denial of medical treatment. The authors offer both ethical and practical methods for dealing with the potentially charged decisions and negotiations between patients, families, and healthcare workers. Unlike other books that focus entirely on the moral consequences and concerns at the end of life, Ethics in End-of-Life Decisions in Social Work Practice combines moral understanding and analysis with a practical and active approach.
