Multiple Sclerosis - Gary L. Birnbaum - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory, often progressive, and potentially disabling disease of the central nervous system. Onset of disease is usually between the ages of 15 and 50, with the incidence nearly twice as high in women. While the cause of MS is still unknown, the predominant theory is that it is an autoimmune disease, triggered by an unknown environmental factor that results in both loss of central nervous system myelin and degeneration of axons and neurons. Although there have been a number of publications addressing different aspects of MS treatment in the neurological literature, there is a dearth of material on MS designed for internists and primary care physicians, who are often the first to see patients presenting with symptoms of MS. Therefore, this concise, clinically focused volume will serve as a valuable resource tailored to the specific needs of internists and primary care physicians. Part of the Oxford Neurology Library, this highly practical pocketbook covers current approaches and new developments in the diagnosis, treatment and management of MS, including both early and advanced stages of the disease. The book offers in-depth coverage of special populations, as well as the more unusual manifestations of MS, which are less familiar to the internal medicine audience. It will also address the role of imaging studies in the diagnosis, differential diagnosis and monitoring of the progression of MS. In addition to providing up-to-date information on pharmacological therapies for MS, the book also describes an array of non-pharmacological treatment options.

The Stress and Mood Management Program for Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis - David Mohr - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that affects more than 400,000 people in the United States. Part I incorporates standard behavioral activation and cognitive restructuring techniques while Part II consists of optional modules designed to address specific problems that are common among MS patients. These include problems in social functioning and management of symptoms like fatigue, pain and cognitive impairment. A module on self-injection anxiety is a unique feature of the program that has proven to help patients overcome their fear of self-administering prescribed injectable medications.Step-by-step instructions for administering therapy are provided in this book in a user-friendly format, along with information on assessment. Complete with sample dialogues, at-home assignments, and lists of materials needed, this comprehensive guide includes all the tools necessary for facilitating effective treatment.

Religious Minorities at Risk - Matthias Basedau - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Religious Minorities at Risk - Matthias Basedau - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

To what extent do minority grievances contribute to intrastate conflict? Against the backdrop of rising discrimination against religious minorities worldwide, Religious Minorities at Risk offers new insights into classic debates on the influences of discrimination, deprivation, and inequality (DDI) on minority grievances and conflict behavior. It does so by utilizing original data on 771 religious minorities in 183 countries between 2000 and 2014. The book demonstrates that DDI is a significant cause of minority grievances which, in turn, deeply influence their conflict behaviors. It also shows the different effects of governmental and societal religious discrimination versus political and economic and marginalization. Religious, political, and economic grievances each escalate conflict intensity by aggrieved minorities in different ways. Ultimately, the book shows that collective grievances remain a powerful explanation for minorities'' conflict behaviors; although influenced by DDI, they are not reducible to them. Second, while religious factors, including religious discrimination and grievances, uniquely contribute to minority conflict behavior, the overall patterns observed for religious minorities closely mirror those typically theorized for other minority groups. Finally, minority conflict intensity reflects the difficulties states encounter in accommodating them. Whereas religious grievances are relatively easily accommodated and therefore rarely escalate beyond rioting, political grievances influence a wider range, from non-violent protest to violence against civilians. Economic grievances, which demand costly systemic reforms, more often escalate to rebellion. An essential work on the causes of intercommunal and intrastate conflict, this will assist policymakers dealing with these issues.

Shattered, Cracked, or Firmly Intact? - Farida Jalalzai - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Shattered, Cracked, or Firmly Intact? - Farida Jalalzai - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

In 1960, Sirimavo Bandaranaike of Sri Lanka made history when she was appointed the world''s first woman prime minister. In the half-century following her achievement, fewer than eighty women worldwide have attained the office of prime minister or president. In 2010, women held just seventeen of the world''s 252 executive posts - slightly less than seven percent. What prevents women from attaining executive office? And why, despite the progress made by women in other political arenas, have these positions remained stubbornly male?In Shattered, Cracked, or Firmly Intact?, Farida Jalalzai explores the patterns of women executive''s paths, powers, and potential impacts. Jalalzai explains the mechanisms that push politically active women into relatively weak posts and why women who successfully attain executive office almost always hail from political families within unstable systems. Combining a broad understanding of global dynamics of executive power with detailed studies of individual women leaders, Shattered, Cracked, or Firmly Intact? analyzes how institutionally embedded gender expectations limit women''s representational impact. Fifty years have passed since Ms. Bandaranaike''s appointment. In Shattered, Cracked, or Firmly Intact?, Jalalzai provides a comprehensive and urgently needed analysis of the factors that prevent women from achieving the world''s highest political offices.

Specialty Competencies in Rehabilitation Psychology - Richard H. Cox - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Specialty Competencies in Rehabilitation Psychology - Richard H. Cox - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

An increasing number of psychologists who were trained in clinical psychology, health psychology, or another specialty are gravitating toward rehabilitation psychology, but many of them have little or no experience with rehabilitation populations. With the explosion of interest in traumatic brain injury (TBI), many neuropsychologists are taking jobs in rehabilitation settings that treat people with TBI but also care for persons with the array of other disabling conditions such as spinal cord injury, stroke, MS, and amputation. In Specialty Competencies in Rehabilitation Psychology, Drs. Cox, Cox, and Caplan provide a guide to the knowledge and skills required by competent rehabilitation psychologists, with an emphasis on the evidence base of the specialty. The volume will be valuable to those preparing for the Board Certification Examination in Rehabilitation Psychology and will also be valuable to newcomers to the field and to clinicians working on an outpatient basis with individuals with a wide variety of chronic conditions.Series in Specialty Competencies in Professional PsychologySeries EditorsArthur M. Nezu and Christine Maguth NezuAs the field of psychology continues to grow and new specialty areas emerge and achieve recognition, it has become increasingly important to define the standards of professional specialty practice. Developed and conceived in response to this need for practical guidelines, this series presents methods, strategies, and techniques for conducting day-to-day practice in any given psychology specialty. The topical volumes address best practices across the functional and foundational competencies that characterize the various psychology specialties, including clinical psychology, cognitive and behavioral psychology, school psychology, geropsychology, forensic psychology, clinical neuropsychology, couples and family psychology, and more. Functional competencies include common practice activities like assessment and intervention, while foundational competencies represent core knowledge areas such as ethical and legal issues, cultural diversity, and professional identification. In addition to describing these competencies, each volume provides a definition, description, and development timeline of a particular specialty, including its essential and characteristic pattern of activities, as well as its distinctive and unique features. Written by recognized experts in their respective fields, volumes are comprehensive, up-to-date, and accessible. These volumes offer invaluable guidance to not only practicing mental health professionals, but those training for specialty practice as well.

The Day Wall Street Exploded - Beverly Gage - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Day Wall Street Exploded - Beverly Gage - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Just after noon on September 16, 1920, as hundreds of workers poured onto Wall Street for their lunchtime break, a horse-drawn cart packed with dynamite exploded in a spray of metal and fire, turning the busiest corner of the financial center into a war zone. Thirty-nine people died and hundreds more lay wounded, making the Wall Street explosion the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history until the Oklahoma City bombing. In The Day Wall Street Exploded, Beverly Gage tells the story of that once infamous but now largely forgotten event. Based on thousands of pages of Bureau of Investigation reports, this historical detective saga traces the four-year hunt for the perpetrators, a worldwide effort that spread as far as Italy and the new Soviet nation. It also gives readers the decades-long but little-known history of homegrown terrorism that helped to shape American society a century ago. The book delves into the lives of victims, suspects, and investigators: world banking power J.P. Morgan, Jr.; labor radical "Big Bill" Haywood; anarchist firebrands Emma Goldman and Luigi Galleani; "America''s Sherlock Holmes," William J. Burns; even a young J. Edgar Hoover. It grapples as well with some of the most controversial events of its day, including the rise of the Bureau of Investigation, the federal campaign against immigrant "terrorists," the grassroots effort to define and protect civil liberties, and the establishment of anti-communism as the sine qua non of American politics. Many Americans saw the destruction of the World Trade Center as the first major terrorist attack on American soil, an act of evil without precedent. The Day Wall Street Exploded reminds us that terror, too, has a history.Praise for the hardcover:"Outstanding."--New York Times Book Review"Ms. Gage is a storyteller...she leaves it to her readers to draw their own connections as they digest her engaging narrative."--The New York Times"Brisk, suspenseful and richly documented"--The Chicago Tribune"An uncommonly intelligent, witty and vibrant account. She has performed a real service in presenting such a complicated case in such a fair and balanced way."--San Francisco Chronicle
