Untapped Power - - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Untapped Power provides extensive insight into why and how to advance diversity, equity and inclusion when promoting development, and addressing fragility and violent conflict.Urgent challenges relating to diversity and inclusion are universal. The global #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter movements as well as the push for LGBTQ+ rights are all emblematic of a growing interest in and focus on how to better embrace and capitalize on diversity. Yet these social movements exist alongside renewed efforts to constrain minority rights and stem immigration around the world. In Untapped Power, Carla Koppell has assembled a leading group of scholars, policy makers, researchers, and activists to provide a comprehensive overview for understanding and navigating these countervailing forces, so that we can build a more peaceful and inclusive world. This book synthesizes theory, research, and analysis to show why an enduring global commitment to diversity and inclusion is essential, and how to advance that agenda in practical terms. It considers major scholarly theories and analytical frameworks underlying the case for a focus on diversity and inclusion; analyzes diversity trends and movements for inclusion; outlines specific strategies and approaches for promoting inclusion throughout peacebuilding and development processes; and discusses priorities to advance the agenda through research, advocacy, financial investments, and programming. A guide to one of the most pressing issues in world politics, this book will be essential for anyone working in the fields of global development, conflict resolution, or peace building.

Arguments and Reason-Giving - Matthew W. Mckeon - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Arguments and Reason-Giving - Matthew W. Mckeon - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Arguments help us to give reasons for things. We use them to advance reasons for their conclusions in order to explain why we believe or did something, to justify our beliefs or actions, and to persuade others to do or to believe something. In Arguments and Reason-Giving, philosopher Matthew W. McKeon addresses the uses of arguments to advance their premises as reasons for believing their conclusions, that is, for believing that their conclusions are true. This book has two parts. In the first part, McKeon develops a conception of reason-giving uses of arguments that aims to deepen our understanding of the argument-centric dimension of our practices of reason-giving in everyday contexts. Inference claims play a central role in reason-giving uses of arguments. You use an argument to advance its premises as reasons for believing the conclusion only if you claim that they are such reasons. Taking such reason-giving to be rationally intentional, you believe what you claim. In the second part of the book, McKeon appeals to this conception of reason-giving uses of arguments to shed light on the nature of their persuasive force, the nature of the inferential reasoning that is expressed, argumentative rationality, and intellectual honesty and intellectual integrity. The notions of inference claims, reasons for belief, and reflective inferences provide the conceptual framework for the book''s engagement with reason-giving uses of arguments and rational persuasion, argumentative rationality, and intellectual honesty and integrity.

Uncertainty - Kostas (researcher Kampourakis - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Uncertainty - Kostas (researcher Kampourakis - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Scientific knowledge is the most solid and robust kind of knowledge that humans have because of the self-correcting character inherent in its own processes. Nevertheless, anti-evolutionists, climate denialists, and anti-vaxxers, among others, question some of the best-established scientific findings, making claims that are unsupported by empirical evidence. A common aspect of these claims is the reference to the uncertainties in these areas of research, which leads to the conclusion that science is uncertain about evolution, climate change, and vaccination, among others. The truth of the matter is that while the broad picture is clear, there exist--and will always exist--uncertainties about the details of the respective phenomena. In this book Kampourakis and McCain show that uncertainty is an inherent feature of science that does not devalue it. In contrast, uncertainty actually makes science advance because it motivates further research. The first book of its kind, Uncertainty draws on philosophy of science to explain what uncertainty in science is and how it makes science advance. It contrasts evolution, climate change, and vaccination, where the uncertainties are exaggerated, to genetic testing and forensic science where the uncertainties are usually overlooked. Kampourakis and McCain discuss the scientific, psychological, and philosophical aspects of uncertainty in order to explain what it is really about, what kind of problems it actually poses, and why it ultimately makes science advance. Contrary to the public representations of scientific findings and conclusions that produce an intuitive but distorted view of science as certain, we need to understand and learn to live with uncertainty in science.

The volume goes on to outline intersectional forms of exclusion in linguistics, describes institutional steps toward inclusion, offers examples of how to further educational justice, and shares models of collaborations designed to create an inclusive public-facing linguistics. The volume''s conclusion outlines actions that linguists can take through research, teaching, and institutional structures to advance inclusion in linguistics and move the field toward social justice.
