Antonio Vieira - - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Antonio Vieira - - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

This volume is the first English translation and annotation of the sermons of António Vieira, a major cultural figure in the Portuguese-speaking world. Born in Lisbon in 1608, Vieira was a Jesuit who lived and worked in both Europe and Brazil in the service of the church and the Portuguese crown. His sermons are among the most renowned pieces of baroque oratory in the Portuguese language. These carefully selected sermons offer insight into Vieira''s visionary thought on social and spiritual matters. In the Sermon for the Success of Portuguese Arms against the Dutch, Vieira inveighs against God for His apparent abandonment of the Portuguese and begs for divine intervention. His Sermon of St. Anthony is an allegory that addresses the inequities that he witnessed in Brazil. The Sexagesima Sermon parodies literary clichés from his time while prescribing a more effective, if harsher, style of preaching. The Sermon of the Good Thief is a rebuke to the imperial officials who used their positions for personal enrichment, and a warning to kings against complicity with corruption. Vieira''s Sermon XXVII addresses African slaves and their Brazilian masters, attempting to comfort the first group in their trials and to admonish the second for their brutality. Finally, the Sermon called Arm tells the story of the relic of Francis Xavier''s arm sent from India to Italy in 1614, and pays tribute to the obedience of Vieira''s Jesuit predecessor.

The Women Are Up to Something - Benjamin J. Bruxvoort Lipscomb - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

The story of four remarkable women who shaped the intellectual history of the 20th century: Elizabeth Anscombe, Philippa Foot, Mary Midgley, and Iris Murdoch. On the cusp of the Second World War, four women went to Oxford to begin their studies: a fiercely brilliant Catholic convert; a daughter of privilege longing to escape her stifling upbringing; an ardent Communist and aspiring novelist with a list of would-be lovers as long as her arm; and a quiet, messy lover of newts and mice who would become a great public intellectual of our time. They became lifelong friends. At the time, only a handful of women had ever made lives in philosophy. But when Oxford''s men were drafted in the war, everything changed. As Elizabeth Anscombe, Philippa Foot, Mary Midgley, and Iris Murdoch labored to make a place for themselves in a male-dominated world, as they made friendships and families, and as they drifted toward and away from each other, they never stopped insisting that some lives are better than others. They argued that courage and discernment and justice--and love--are the heart of a good life. This book presents the first sustained engagement with these women''s contributions: with the critique and the alternative they framed. Drawing on a cluster of recently opened archives and extensive correspondence and interviews with those who knew them best, Benjamin Lipscomb traces the lives and ideas of four friends who gave us a better way to think about ethics, and ourselves.

Laughing Fit to Kill - Glenda Carpio - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Laughing Fit to Kill - Glenda Carpio - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Modern black humour represents a rich history of radical innovation stretching back to the antebellum period. Laughing Fit to Kill reveals how black writers, artists, and comedians have used humour across two centuries as a uniquely powerful response to forced migration and enslavement. Glenda Carpio traces how, through various modes of "conjuring," through gothic, grotesque and absurdist slapstick, through stinging satire, hyperbole, and burlesque, and through the strategic expression of racial stereotype itself, black humourists of all sorts have enacted "rituals of redress." In highlighting the tradition and tropes of black humourists, Carpio illuminates the reach of slavery''s long arm into our contemporary popular culture. She convincingly demonstrates the ways that, for instance, Richard Pryor and Dave Chappelle''s modes of post-Civil Rights tragicomedy are deeply indebted to that of William Wells Brown and Charles Chesnutt''s 19th-century comedic conjuring. Likewise, she reveals how contemporary iconoclasts such as Ishmael Reed and Suzan-Lori Parks owe much to the intricate satiric grammar of black linguistic expression rooted in slavery. Carpio also demonstrates how Robert Colescott''s 1970s paintings and Kara Walker''s silhouette installations use a visual vocabulary to extend comedy in a visual register. The jokes in this tradition are bawdy, brutal, horrific and insurgent, and they have yet to be fully understood. Laughing Fit to Kill provides a new critical lexicon for understanding the jabbing punch-lines that have followed slavery''s long legacy.

Gettysburg Requiem - Glenn W. Lafantasie - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Gettysburg Requiem - Glenn W. Lafantasie - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

William C. Oates is best remembered as the Confederate officer defeated at Gettysburg''s Little Round Top, losing a golden opportunity to turn the Union''s flank and win the battle--and perhaps the war. Now, Glenn W. LaFantasie--bestselling author of Twilight at Little Round Top--has written a gripping biography of Oates. Oates was no moonlight-and-magnolias Southerner, as LaFantasie shows. Raised in the hard-scrabble Wiregrass Country of Alabama, he ran away from home as a teenager, roamed through Louisiana and Texas--where he took up card sharking--and finally returned to Alabama, to pull himself up by his bootstraps and become a respected attorney. During the war, he rose to the rank of colonel, served under Stonewall Jackson and Lee, was wounded six times and lost an arm. Returning home, he launched a successful political career, becoming a seven-term congressman and ultimately governor. LaFantasie shows how, for Oates, the war never really ended--he remained devoted to the Lost Cause, and spent the rest of his life waging the political battles of Reconstruction. Here then is a richly evocative story of Southern life before, during, and after the Civil War, based on first-time and exclusive access of family papers and never-before-seen archives. "Exhaustively researched and elegantly written, this captivating biography is a signal contribution to Civil War historiography.... In LaFantasie''s penetrating analysis, Oates becomes the avatar of everything both objectionable and laudable in the antebellum and postwar South as well as in the intervening Civil War." --Library Journal (starred review)

Feast of Excess - George Cotkin - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Feast of Excess - George Cotkin - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Written in a lively and accessible style, Feast of Excess traces in brief chapters the history of the New Sensibility in America. The book opens with John Cage in 1952, experimenting with an excess of minimalism in his musical piece of silence, 4'' 33" and in his chaotic, maximalist work Theater Piece, No. 1. Feast concludes in 1974 with performance artist Chris Burden who, among other things, had himself shot in the arm, crucified to a VW bug, and spent days scrunched up in a locker. Each chapter, devoted to a single year, allows for the moment of creation to be fixed in the biography of the artist(s), the historical moment, and the emerging tradition of the New Sensibility. This New Sensibility was predicated upon excess, pushing things, going too far, whether in the direction of minimalism or maximalism. This excess was, in general, directed at shared concerns, including violence, madness, sexuality, confession, the performative, breaking down barriers between artist and audience, and between high and low culture. It was about liberation. The New Sensibility emerged across varied artistic endeavors in the early 1950s before being named as a specific phenomenon in the mid-1960s by both Susan Sontag and Tom Wolfe. By the middle 1970s, this excess in American culture had become established as the norm. It remains the essence of our culture today, for good and ill. The excess at the center of the New Sensibility can disgust, at times, but when it is leavened with a sense of limits, it can result in cultural products of the highest quality, as well as resist easy consumption and commodification.

The Perils of Partnership - Jonathan H. Marks - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Perils of Partnership - Jonathan H. Marks - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Countless public health agencies are trying to solve our most intractable public health problems -- among them, the obesity and opioid epidemics -- by partnering with corporations responsible for creating or exacerbating those problems. We are told industry must be part of the solution. But is it time to challenge the partnership paradigm and the popular narratives that sustain it? In The Perils of Partnership, Jonathan H. Marks argues that public-private partnerships and multi-stakeholder initiatives create "webs of influence" that undermine the integrity of public health agencies; distort public health research and policy; and reinforce the framing of public health problems and their solutions in ways that are least threatening to the commercial interests of corporate "partners". We should expect multinational corporations to develop strategies of influence -- but public bodies can and should develop counter-strategies to insulate themselves from corporate influence in all its forms. Marks reviews the norms that regulate public-public interactions (separation of powers) and private-private interactions (antitrust and competition law), and argues for an analogous set of norms to govern public-private interactions. He also offers a novel framework to help public bodies identify the systemic ethical implications of their current or proposed relationships with industry actors. Marks makes a compelling case that the default public-private interaction should be at arm''s length: separation, not collaboration. He calls for a new paradigm that avoids the perils of corporate influence and more effectively protects and promotes public health. The Perils of Partnership is essential reading for public health officials and policymakers -- but anyone interested in public health will recognize the urgency of this book.

Journalism and Truth in an Age of Social Media - - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Journalism and Truth in an Age of Social Media - - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Truth qualities of journalism are under intense scrutiny in today''s world. Journalistic scandals have eroded public confidence in mainstream media while pioneering news media compete to satisfy the public''s appetite for news. Still worse is the specter of "fake news" that looms over media and political systems that underpin everything from social stability to global governance. This volume aims to illuminate the contentious media landscape to help journalism students, scholars, and professionals understand contemporary conditions and arm them to deal with a spectrum of new developments ranging from technology and politics to best practices. Fake news is among the greatest of these concerns, and can encompass everything from sarcastic or ironic humor to bot-generated, made-up stories. It can also include the pernicious transmission of selected, biased facts, the use of incomplete or misleadingly selective framing of stories, and photographs that editorially convey certain characteristics. This edited volume contextualizes the current "fake news problem." Yet it also offers a larger perspective on what seems to be uniquely modern, computer-driven problems. We must remember that we have lived with the problem of people having to identify, characterize, and communicate the truth about the world around them for millennia.Rather than identify a single culprit for disseminating misinformation, this volume examines how news is perceived and identified, how news is presented to the public, and how the public responds to news. It considers social media''s effect on the craft of journalism, as well as the growing role of algorithms, big data, and automatic content-production regimes. As an edited collection, this volume gathers leading scholars in the fields of journalism and communication studies, philosophy, and the social sciences to address critical questions of how we should understand journalism''s changing landscape as it relates to fundamental questions about the role of truth and information in society.

Confederate Emancipation - Bruce Levine - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Confederate Emancipation - Bruce Levine - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

In early 1864, as the Confederate Army of Tennessee licked its wounds after being routed at the Battle of Chattanooga, Major-General Patrick Cleburne (the "Stonewall of the West") proposed that "the most courageous of our slaves" be trained as soldiers and that "every slave in the South who shall remain true to the Confederacy in this war" be freed. In Confederate Emancipation, Bruce Levine looks closely at such Confederate plans to arm and free slaves. He shows that within a year of Cleburne''s proposal, which was initially rejected out of hand, Jefferson Davis, Judah P. Benjamin, and Robert E. Lee had all reached the same conclusions. At that point, the idea was debated widely in newspapers and drawing rooms across the South, as more and more slaves fled to Union lines and fought in the ranks of the Union army. Eventually, the soldiers of Lee''s army voted on the proposal, and the Confederate government actually enacted a version of it in March. The Army issued the necessary orders just two weeks before Appomattox, too late to affect the course of the war. Throughout the book, Levine captures the voices of blacks and whites, wealthy planters and poor farmers, soldiers and officers, and newspaper editors and politicians from all across the South. In the process, he sheds light on such hot-button topics as what the Confederacy was fighting for, whether black southerners were willing to fight in large numbers in defense of the South, and what this episode foretold about life and politics in the post-war South. Confederate Emancipation offers an engaging and illuminating account of a fascinating and politically charged idea, setting it firmly and vividly in the context of the Civil War and the part played in it by the issue of slavery and the actions of the slaves themselves.

Joint Ventures - Alvin I. Goldman - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

What distinguishes humankind from other species? A leading candidate is our facility at mutual understanding ("theory of mind"), our ability to ascribe thoughts, desires, and feelings to one another. How do we do this? Folk-wisdom says, "By empathy -- we put ourselves in other people''s shoes". In the last few decades this idea has moved from folk-wisdom to philosophical conjecture to serious scientific theory. This volume collects essays by Alvin Goldman, many of which have played a major role in crystallizing this "simulation," or "empathizing," account of mindreading and showing how it is confirmed by recent findings in psychology and cognitive neuroscience. Regions of your brain resonate with the brains of others when you observe them manifest their feelings in facial affect or see them about to undergo a painful stimulus or a mere touch on the arm. Essays in the volume explore an array of topics in the philosophy of cognitive science, ranging from embodied cognition to the metaphysics of actions and events. "Embodied cognition" is a catch-phrase for a family of current proposals in the philosophy of cognitive science. Some of these call for a radical re-shaping of cognitive science and others for a more measured response to repeated experimental findings that the body -- or representations of the body -- figure more prominently in cognition than previously recognized. Goldman dives into this terrain with a theory that brings coherence and unity to a large swath of scientific evidence. Other essays revisit his earlier work on action individuation but reconfigure it with a psychologizing twist. The final essay prepares the reader for a futuristic scenario: a book presents you with eerily accurate accounts of your past life, your present thoughts, and even your upcoming decisions. How should you respond to it?

The Global Gag Rule and Women's Reproductive Health - Yana Van Der Meulen Rodgers - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Global Gag Rule and Women's Reproductive Health - Yana Van Der Meulen Rodgers - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Foreign assistance by the United States is tangled with domestic politics, and perhaps this is most clear in relation to funding for health and family planning. The long arm of U.S. domestic politics has reached the intimate lives of women all over the world because it has threatened major cuts in funding to healthcare organizations in developing countries if they perform or promote abortions. This "global gag rule," so-called because to even mention abortion endangered funding, has been a hallmark of Republican administrations since it was first enacted by President Ronald Reagan. When Donald Trump reinstated and expanded the policy, there was popular uproar and a firestorm of debate. Proponents of the policy emphasize the importance of reducing the number of abortions globally and claim that the gag rule will be effective in achieving this goal. In this innovative book, Yana van der Meulen Rodgers argues that the gag rule has failed to achieve its goal of reducing abortions, in fact the restrictive legislation likely has increased unsafe abortions, and because the reduction in funding is indiscriminate there are negative repercussions across a range of health outcomes for women, children, and men. While proponents of the policy rely on ideology, Rodgers provides systematic analysis of how the global gag rule affects women''s reproductive health across developing regions, grounded in a conceptual framework that models the complex factors that influence women''s decision making about fertility. She also traces the background to American policy, the evolution of international family planning programs, the links between contraceptive access and fertility rates, and the relationship between restrictive abortion laws and abortion rates. And because Rodgers provides a rounded perspective on factors influencing women''s decisions on reproduction and abortion, she offers a constructive and cost-effective approach for U.S. family planning assistance that targets integrated reproductive health services.

A Well-Regulated Militia - Saul Cornell - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

A Well-Regulated Militia - Saul Cornell - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Americans are deeply divided over the Second Amendment. Some passionately assert that the Amendment protects an individual''s right to own guns. Others, that it does no more than protect the right of states to maintain militias. Now, in the first and only comprehensive history of this bitter controversy, Saul Cornell proves conclusively that both sides are wrong. Cornell, a leading constitutional historian, shows that the Founders understood the right to bear arms as neither an individual nor a collective right, but as a civic right--an obligation citizens owed to the state to arm themselves so that they could participate in a well regulated militia. He shows how the modern "collective right" view of the Second Amendment, the one federal courts have accepted for over a hundred years, owes more to the Anti-Federalists than the Founders. Likewise, the modern "individual right" view emerged only in the nineteenth century. The modern debate, Cornell reveals, has its roots in the nineteenth century, passed and the first cases on the right to bear arms came before the courts. Equally important, he describes how the gun control battle took on a new urgency during Reconstruction, when Republicans and Democrats clashed over the meaning of the right to bear arms and its connection to the Fourteenth Amendment. When the Democrats defeated the Republicans, it elevated the "collective rights" theory to preeminence and set the terms for constitutional debate over this issue for the next century. A Well Regulated Militia not only restores the lost meaning of the original Second Amendment, but it provides a clear historical road map that charts how we have arrived at our current impasse over guns. For anyone interested in understanding the great American gun debate, this is a must read.

Ankylosing Spondylitis - Michael H. Weisman - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Ankylosing Spondylitis - Michael H. Weisman - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Ankylosing Spondylitis is an inflammatory arthritis that affects the spine and sacroiliac joints as well as other parts of the body, and that can eventually lead, in some patients, to complete fusion of the vertebrae and total rigidity. AS is not a rare health problem, but is in fact found in almost one percent of the US population, typically strikes young people and young families, and in its various forms is probably more common than rheumatoid arthritis. In this invaluable guide, Dr. Michael H. Weisman, one of America''s leading authorities on AS, provides a down-to-earth, crystal-clear guide that is ideal for patients and their family. Dr. Weisman explains what AS is, discusses the genetic background to the disease (including the genes that researchers think may predispose some people to AS), explains how to diagnose the disease early and possibly prevent the later development of debilitating rigidity, the use of MRI for early detection, and much more. The book outlines which medications (such as TNF inhibitors) seem the most promising right now, the various drug side effects, the value of physical therapy, other treatment approaches, and whether surgery can be used to manage the complications of the disease. AS can lead to severe disability, but even those who have a milder form will experience painful "flares" alternating with periods of remission. Since it is a progressive disease in many patients, it is very important to reach patients as early as possible. This book will arm patients with the vital information they need to combat the disease. Laurie M. Savage, the Executive Director of the Spondylitis Association of America (SSA), the main patient support group world-wide, has written a foreword to the book. In addition, SSA will endorse the book and their logo will appear on the cover.

The Firm - Gary (associate Professor Bruce - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Based on previously classified documents and on interviews with former secret police officers and ordinary citizens, The Firm is the first comprehensive history of East Germany''s secret police, the Stasi, at the grassroots level. Focusing on Gransee and Perleberg, two East German districts located north of Berlin, Gary Bruce reveals how the Stasi monitored small-town East Germany. He paints an eminently human portrait of those involved with this repressive arm of the government, featuring interviews with former officers that uncover a wide array of personalities, from devoted ideologues to reluctant opportunists, most of whom talked frankly about East Germany''s obsession with surveillance. Their paths after the collapse of Communism are gripping stories of resurrection and despair, of renewal and demise, of remorse and continued adherence to the movement. The book also sheds much light on the role of the informant, the Stasi''s most important tool in these out-of-the-way areas. Providing on-the-ground empirical evidence of how the Stasi operated on a day-to-day basis with ordinary people, this remarkable volume offers an unparalleled picture of life in a totalitarian state. "Brilliantly written and deeply researched, this is the best book in any language on East Germany''s Stasi." --Robert Gellately, author of Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler: The Age of Social Catastrophe "This is surely the most detailed micro-analysis of the East German security service.... In a rare step, Bruce actually interviews a number of former Stasi staff, weaving from his conversations telling portraits of 14 of them." --Foreign Affairs | "Brilliant, thoroughly researched, and highly readableenables readers to better understand how the Stasi operated in everyday life and how its inescapable presence affected citizens." --CHOICE "Bruce has done an admirable job of exploring the repressive nature of the East German state and the experience of normalcy in small towns where the watchers and watched lived side by side." --Oral History Review
