Notre-Dame de Paris - Victor Hugo - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Three extraordinary characters caught in a web of fatal obsession are at the centre of Hugo''s novel. The grotesque hunchback Quasimodo, bell-ringer of Notre-Dame, owes his life to the austere archdeacon, Claude Frollo, who in turn is bound by a hopeless passion to the gypsy dancer Esmeralda. She, meanwhile, is bewitched by a handsome, empty-headed officer, but by an unthinking act of kindness wins Quasimodo''s selfless devotion. Behind the central figures moves a pageant of picturesque characters, ranging from the cruel, superstitious king, Louis XI, to the underworld of beggars and petty criminals. These disreputable truands'' night-time assault on the cathedral is one of the most spectacular set-pieces of Romantic literature. Hugo vividly depicts medieval Paris, where all life is dominated by the massive cathedral. His passionate enthusiasm for Gothic architecture is set within the context of an epic view of mankind''s history, to which he attaches even more importance than to the novel''s compelling story. Alban Krailsheimer''s new translation is a fresh approach to this monumental classic by France''s most celebrated Romantic. Re-Excavating Jerusalem - Kay Prag - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Re-excavating Jerusalem: Archival Archaeology is concerned with the archaeology and history of Jerusalem, and with the story of its people over many centuries. It is a story of ongoing crisis, of adaptations and inheritance under successive rulers, where each generation has owed a cultural debt to its predecessors, from the Bronze Age to the modern world.Illustrated with over 80 photos and drawings, Re-excavating Jerusalem: Archival Archaeology reflects on events as revealed in a major programme of archaeological excavation conducted by Dame Kathleen Kenyon in the 1960s, which is still in the process of publication. The excavation archive has an ongoing relevance today. Even though our knowledge of the city and its inhabitants has increased over the decades since then, the archive still reveals fresh insights to set against contemporary work. The preservation of such archives has great importance for future historians. Amongst topics addressed are the nature of a dispersed settlement pattern in the second millennium BC; a fresh look at the vexed problems of the biblical accounts of the work of David and Solomon and the development of the city in the tenth and ninth centuries BC; the nature of the defensive walls of the town re-established by Nehemiah in the fifth century BC; some evidence of the Roman occupation following the almost total destruction of the city in AD 70; and an exploration in the Islamic city during the twelfth to fifteenth centuries.

Debate and Dialogue - Emma Cayley - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Debate and Dialogue - Emma Cayley - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

In early humanist France two debating traditions converge: one literary and vernacular, one intellectual and conducted mainly via Latin epistles. Debate and Dialogue demonstrates how the two fuse in the vernacular verse debates of Alain Chartier, secretary and notary at the court of Charles VI, and later, Charles VII. In spite of considerable contemporary praise for Chartier, his work has remained largely neglected by modern critics. This study shows how Chartier participates in a movement that invests a vernacular poetic with moral and political significance, inspiring such social engagements as the fifteenth-century poetic exchange known as the Querelle de la Belle Dame sans mercy. Emma Cayley sets Chartier in the context of a late-medieval debating climate through the use of a new model of participatory poetics which she terms the collaborative debating community. This is a dynamic and generative social grouping based on Brian Stock''s model of the textual community, as well as Pierre Bourdieu''s sociological categories of field, habitus, and capital. This dialectical model takes account of the socio-cultural context of literary production, and suggests the fundamentally competitive yet collaborative nature of late-medieval poetry. Cayley draws an analogy here between literary debates and game-playing, engaging with the game theory of Johan Huizinga and Roger Caillois, and discusses the manuscript context of such literary debates as the materialization of this poetic game. The collaborative debating community postulated affords unique insights into the dynamics of late-medieval compositional and reading practices.

Kant's Elliptical Path - Karl (university Of Notre Dame) Ameriks - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Kant's Elliptical Path - Karl (university Of Notre Dame) Ameriks - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Kant''s Elliptical Path explores the main stages and key concepts in the development of Kant''s Critical philosophy, from the early 1760s to the 1790s. Karl Ameriks provides a detailed and concise account of the main ways in which the later Critical works provide a plausible defence of the conception of humanity''s fundamental end that Kant turned to after reading Rousseau in the 1760s. Separate essays are devoted to each of the three Critiques, as well as to earlier notes and lectures and several of Kant''s later writings on history and religion. A final section devotes three chapters to post-Kantian developments in German Romanticism, accounts of tragedy up through Nietzsche, and contemporary philosophy. The theme of an elliptical path is shown to be relevant to these writers as well as to many aspects of Kant''s own life and work. The topics of the book include fundamental issues in epistemology and metaphysics, with a new defense of the Amerik''s ''moderate'' interpretation of transcendental idealism. Other essays evaluate Kant''s concept of will and reliance on a ''fact of reason'' in his practical philosophy, as well as his critique of traditional theodicies, and the historical character of his defense of religion and the concepts of creation and hope within ''the boundaries of mere reason''. Kant''s Elliptical Path will be of value to historians of modern philosophy and Kant scholars, while its treatment of several literary figures and issues in aesthetics, politics, history, and theology make it relevant to readers outside of philosophy.

Irony and Idealism - Fred (university Of Notre Dame) Rush - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Irony and Idealism - Fred (university Of Notre Dame) Rush - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Irony and Idealism investigates the historical and conceptual structure of the development of a philosophically distinctive conception of irony in early- to mid-nineteenth century European philosophy. The principal figures treated are the romantic thinkers Friedrich Schlegel and Novalis, Hegel, and Kierkegaard. Fred Rush argues that the development of philosophical irony in this historical period is best understood as providing a way forward in philosophy in the wake of Kant and Jacobi that is discrete from, and many times opposed to, German idealism. Irony and Idealism argues, against the grain of received opinion, that among the German romantics Schlegel''s conception of irony is superior to similar ideas found in Novalis. It also presents a sustained argument showing that historical reconsideration of Schlegel has been hampered by contestable Hegelian assumptions concerning the conceptual viability of romantic irony and by the misinterpretation of what the romantics mean by ''the absolute.'' Rush argues that this is primarily a social-ontological term and not, as is often supposed, a metaphysical concept. Kierkegaard, although critical of the romantic conception, deploys his own adaptation of it in his criticism of Hegel, continuing, and in a way completing, the arc of irony through nineteenth-century philosophy. The book concludes by offering suggestions meant to guide contemporary reconsideration of Schlegel''s and Kierkegaard''s views on the philosophical significance of irony.

Resilience in Palliative Care - - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Resilience in Palliative Care - - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

The first book of its kind, Resilience and Palliative Care - Achievement in adversity takes the increasing international literature on resilience and applies it to palliative and end-of-life care. The book offers an overview of all key aspects of palliative care, presented through a resilience perspective. Why do some patients and families break down while others surmounts the challenges facing them? What interventions strengthen individual, family and community coping? This book aims to facilitate change with people facing the crisis of death, dying and bereavement. Much of the existing literature has focused on risk, problems and vulnerability; the emerging concept of resilience focuses on strengths and possibilities. The ''total pain''/''total care'' approach pioneered by Dame Cicely Saunders and St Christopher''s Hospice now needs reinterpreting in the light of changing contexts and challenges. The realities of demographic change and resource-constrained health and social care environments have generated an increasingly risk focused approach to service delivery. A narrowly medicalised approach has inevitable limitations; professional care alone will be unable to meet need and demand in the face of ageing populations, changing patterns of illness and the need for equity. The resilience approach offers a counterbalance that harnesses the strengths of individuals and the communities in which they live and in which most of their dying will take place. Resilience thinking emphasises the importance of public health and creates a partnership between patients, professionals and community structures, seeking to build community capacity and to deliver a preventive health care that will leave future generations less afraid of the dying and bereavement that will confront all of us.This book offers insights into how, at all levels of planning and delivering palliative care, there is the opportunity to maximise coping, build an infrastructure for self-help, and increase the capacity of strengthened teams and organisations.

Fire - Andrew C. (royal Holloway Scott - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Fire - Andrew C. (royal Holloway Scott - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Fire is rarely out of the headlines, from large natural wildfires raging across the Australian or Californian countrysides to the burning of buildings such as the disasters of Grenfell tower and Notre Dame. Fire on these scales can represent a serious risk to human life and property. But the advent of fire made and controlled by humans also represented a crucial point in our evolution, allowing us to cook our food, forge our weapons, and warm our homes. This Very Short Introduction covers the fundamentals of fire, whether wild or under human control, starting with the basics of ignition, combustion, and fuel. Andrew Scott considers both natural wildfires and the role of humans in making and suppressing fire. Despite frightening reports of wildfire destruction, he also shows how landscape fires have been part of our planet''s history for 400 million years, and do not always have to be extinguished. He also considers the problem of fires in urban settings, including new ways to prevent fires. The cost of wildfire can be steep - as well as the burning, post-fire erosion and flooding can have a great impact on both humans and the environment. It can also have a lasting effect in shaping ecosystems and plant life. Scott ends by examining the relationship between fire and the climate, and considering the future of wildfire in a warming world.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

The Real Traviata - Rene Weis - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Real Traviata - Rene Weis - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Real Traviata is the rags-to-riches story of a tragic young woman whose life inspired one of the most famous operas of all time, Verdi''s masterpiece La traviata, as well as one of the most scandalous and successful French novels of the nineteenth century, La Dame aux Camélias, by Alexandre Dumas fils. The woman at the centre of the story, Marie Duplessis, escaped from her life as an abused teenage girl in provincial Normandy, rising in an amazingly short space of time to the apex of fashionable life in nineteenth century Paris, where she was considered the queen of the Parisian courtesans. Her life was painfully short, but by sheer willpower, intelligence, talent, and stunning looks she attained such prominence in the French capital that ministers of the government and even members of the French royal family fell under her spell. In the 1840s she commanded the kind of ''paparazzi'' attention that today we associate only with major royalty or the biggest Hollywood stars. Aside from the younger Dumas, her conquests included a host of writers and artists, including the greatest pianist of the century, Franz Liszt, with whom she once hoped to elope. When she died Théophile Gautier, one of the most important Parisian writers of the day, penned an obituary fit for a princess. Indeed, he boldly claimed that she had been a princess, notwithstanding her peasant origin and her distinctly demi-monde existence. And although now largely forgotten, in the years immediately after her death, Marie''s legend if anything grew in stature, with her immortalization in Verdi''s La traviata, an opera in which the great Romantic composer tried to capture her essence in some of the most heart-wrenching and lyrical music ever composed.

Continental Crosscurrents - J. B. Bullen - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Continental Crosscurrents - J. B. Bullen - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Continental Crosscurrents is a series of case studies reflecting British attitudes to continental art during the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries. It stresses the way in which the British went to the continent in their search for origins or their pursuit of sources of purity and originality. This cult of the primitive took many forms; it involved a reassessment of medieval German and Italian art and offered new ways of interpreting Venetian painting; it opened up new readings of architectural history and the ''discovery'' of the Romanesque; it generated a debate about the value of returning to religious subjects in art and it raised the question of the relationship between modern art and Byzantine art in the early twentieth century.J. B. Bullen''s original study presents some exciting findings. Few critics have noticed how much in advance of his time was Coleridge''s passion for medieval art; Ruskin''s debt in the Stones of Venice to Victor Hugo''s Notre Dame de Paris has hardly been noted, and Browning''s involvement with the debate on the morality of Christian art is explored more extensively than previously. Three chapters are devoted to the role of British criticism in identifying the Romanesque style in architecture and differentiating it from the Gothic. They trace the concept as it arose in criticism at the beginning of the nineteenth century; its employment in the remarkable buildings of Edmund Sharpe and Sara Losh and the way in which it reached a climax in Waterhouse''s enigmatic choice of Romanesque for the Natural History Museum in London. The collection concludes with two continental episodes from the history of modernism. One is the explosive British reaction to the primitivism of Gauguin; the other involves the identifying of one of the characters in D. H. Lawrence''s novel Women in Love. Curious evidence suggests that the malevolent figure of Loerke was based on a German sculptor whom Lawrence met in Italy before the First World War.

Recognizing Spiritual Needs in People who are Dying - Rachel Stanworth - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Recognizing Spiritual Needs in People who are Dying - Rachel Stanworth - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Listening carefully to patients at the end of life is at the heart of good palliative care and this book provides a means of recognizing and talking about spiritual needs even when religious language is not used. The author refers to this as a ''language of spirit''. The book is based on interviews with patients who are dying and the language that they use to describe their experiences. It deals with death, dying, the experiences of patients and the relief of spiritual pain by looking closely at patient stories, drawings and behaviour. The book explains why it is often easier to recognize than to explain spiritual issues. Part One explores the psychological, spiritual and theological interpretations of human experience. A detailed account is given of how the patients'' own stories were collected. Drawing on a broad literature which is grounded in patients'' words and deeds, Part Two introduces a non-religious ''language of spirit''. Illuminated by patient art, Part Three shows what patients use this language to ''say'' about their situation and how it is mediated through various metaphors. Part Four suggests ways of responding positively to patients'' spiritual needs.Aimed primarily at palliative care specialists and specialist nurses, this book will also appeal to health care chaplains, pastoral support workers, theologians, social researchers, and psychotherapists.''The numerous illustrations, given by patients comments as they tell their story, make this book a truly fascinating journey through an important area of end of life care.'' Dame Cicely Saunders, OM, DBE, FRCP, Founder/President, St Christopher''s Hospice, London''The emphasis on allowing patients to speak for themselves is striking... the author has presented the topic in a sensitive and refreshing way... I think this book will be well-received and it will be an important contribution to the literature of palliative care.''
