‘How many insects find their home in an English country garden?’ asks the second verse of this tongue-in-cheek arrangement of the familiar, traditional English Country Garden, before moving on to the birds that ‘drive you right up the wall’ and the weeds ‘that always defeat you’.Contemporary English composer Herbert Chappell has been an active free-lance writer of music since the 1950’s, since when he has written and conducted hundreds of works that range from advertising jingles and tv and film scores to beloved works for young and amateur musicians and much in between. English Country Garden cleverly modulates upwards at each verse, adding to the fun and ending with a coda full of exasperation and humour.

John McCabe: Songs Of The Garden

Written for SATB soloists, with SATB chorus, Brass Quintet and Organ, this setting was inspired by the illustrations of 18th Century Japanese artist Utamaro. McCabe has selected a group of texts that are chosen to express the period of spring to autumn from the view of the Garden and it's inhabitants, including the birds, insects, plants and animals. The texts are taken from sources as diverse as John Clare, William Blake and Walt Whitman. The set was written in 2003/04 and commissioned by The John Armitage Memorial Trust.

Williamson: Celebration Of Divine Love for High Voice with Piano acc.

Malcolm Williamson (1931-2003) was an Australian composer, who moved to Britain in 1950 and spent the rest of his life there. He was appointed Master of the Queen’s Music in 1975, a title he held until his death, and was reputedly the most commissioned composer of his generation. The song cycle Celebration Of Divine Love was written in 1963, making it one of the composer’s earliest vocal works. It is scored for High Voice with Piano accompaniment, and dedicated to Barbara Elsy. The text was written by James McAuley, an Australian poet who Williamson often drew inspiration from.
