Microcredit banking is the brainchild of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Muhammad Yunus Professor of Economics at Chittagong University, Bangladesh and Chair of Grameen Bank. From small beginnings, the Microcredit movement has become worldwide. Professor Yunus determined to find a new way to make loans to impoverished peasants who commercial banks would not give credit to as they could not provide the security for the loan. Yunus devised a method to provide microloans to individuals who formed themselves into "small groups" aiming at mutual support. The loan was provided to the group for each to benefit in sequence. The group, based on trust, originally worked together so that the loan was repaid by the first recipient and then given in turn to the other members. The self-esteem of the recipients was raised by the success of the group members in repaying the loan becoming shareholders of the Grameen Bank. From small beginnings, Grameen Bank has grown into a successful organisation with world-wide connections to other microcredit enterprises. This book looks in depth at the psycho-socio-dynamics of poverty, at mobilising constructive forces of groups to empower borrowers to become effective agents. The volume is grounded upon consideration of poverty as a psychological as much as an economic condition, and discusses microcredit as an innovative tool to overcome poverty in that perspective. It will pay special attention to the Grameen model considered through the special relational technology associated with it, which draws upon solidarity-lending groups and community interaction.

Higher Education Act Reauthorization - David P Smole - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA) as amended, authorises the federal government''s major federal student aid programs (Title IV), as well as other programs which provide institutional aid and support (Titles II, III and V). In addition, the HEA authorises services and support to less-advantaged students (select Title IV programs), and to students pursuing international education and certain graduate and professional degrees (Titles VI and VII). The programs authorised bythe HEA are administered by the U.S. Department of Education (ED), and made available an estimated 70% ($94 billion) of all federal, state and institutional aid awarded to post-secondary students in 2005-2006 (excluding tax benefits). The 108th and 109th Congresses each considered but did not complete the HEA reauthorization process. For the 110th Congress, the Higher Education Amendments of 2007 (S. 1642) was introduced by Senator Kennedy on June 18, 2007, and approved by the Senate Health, Education, Labour, and Pensions Committee (HELP)on July 10th. Additionally, much like what occurred during the 109th Congress, this year the reauthorization of the HEA has become heavily intertwined with the budget reconciliation process, as both the Senate HELP Committee and the House Education and Labour Committee have reported budget reconciliation bills that would make numerous changes to programs and provisions contained in the HEA. This book provides a side-by-side comparison of the HEA reauthorization proposal in the HELP Committee-passed version of S. 1642 to current law. The side-by-side is generally organised to correspond with the organisation of S. 1642. The book begins with a brief overview of the titles and major programs of the HEA, and includes a short summary of the larger issues and proposed changes in S. 1642 for each title and program.

Coastal Groundwater System Changes in Response to Large-Scale Land Reclamation - Haipeng Guo - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Coastal Groundwater System Changes in Response to Large-Scale Land Reclamation - Haipeng Guo - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Most large urban centres lie in coastal regions, which are home to about 25% of the world''s population. The current coastal urban population of 200 million is projected to almost double in the next 20 to 30 years. This expanding human presence has dramatically changed the coastal natural environment. To meet the growing demand for more housing and other land uses, land has been reclaimed from the sea in coastal areas in many countries, including China, Britain, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United States. Coastal areas are often the ultimate discharge zones of regional ground water flow systems. The direct impact of land reclamation on coastal engineering, environment and marine ecology is well recognised and widely studied. However, it has not been well recognised that reclamation may change the regional groundwater regime, including groundwater level, interface between seawater and fresh groundwater, and submarine groundwater discharge to the coast. This book first reviews the state of the art of the recent studies on the impact of coastal land reclamation on ground water level and the seawater interface. Steady-state analytical solutions based on Dupuit and Ghyben-Herzberg assumptions have been derived to describe the modification of water level and movement of the interface between fresh groundwater and saltwater in coastal hillside or island situations. These solutions show that land reclamation increases water level in the original aquifer and pushes the saltwater interface to move towards the sea. In the island situation, the water divide moves towards the reclaimed side, and ground water discharge to the sea on both sides of the island increases. After reclamation, the water resource is increased because both recharge and the size of aquifer are increased. This book then derives new analytical solutions to estimate groundwater travel time before and after reclamation. Hypothetical examples are used to examine the changes of groundwater travel time in response to land reclamation. After reclamation, groundwater flow in the original aquifer tends to be slower and the travel time of the groundwater from any position in the original aquifer to the sea becomes longer for the situation of coastal hillside. For the situation of an island, the water will flow faster on the unreclaimed side, but more slowly on the reclaimed side. The impact of reclamation on groundwater travel time on the reclaimed side is much more significant than that on the unreclaimed side. The degree of the modifications of the groundwater travel time mainly depends on the scale of land reclamation and the hydraulic conductivity of the fill materials.

Anticonvulsant Sulfonamides in Epilepsy & Other Neurological Disorders - Masako Kinoshita - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Anticonvulsant Sulfonamides in Epilepsy & Other Neurological Disorders - Masako Kinoshita - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, characterised by recurrent epileptic seizures, affecting all age groups which exhibit a wide range of symptoms and severities. Once seizures are well-controlled without impeding side effects or co-morbidities, patients with epilepsy can participate in various social activities and can maintain good quality of life. In order to achieve the condition, there are emerging new antiepileptic drugs with sufficient efficacy to both partial and generalised seizures, with minimum adverse events, applicable to both adults and children, and used as monotherapy or add-on therapy. Sulfonamide drugs have been originally developed as potent antimicrobial agents, and several antiepileptic sulfonamides show efficacy in epilepsy. This book will describe a recent role in epilepsy therapy, mechanism of action, use in epilepsy, and side effects of sulfonamide antiepileptic drugs, (ie: acetazolamide, sulthiame, topiramate, and zonisamide). Not only practical use in the field of epilepsy, but also scientific issues as metabolism, interactions, possible effect to other neurological disorders of these drugs, will be summarized. Moreover, recent topics around wide variety of sulfonamide drugs will be covered. The author hopes to provide useful information to medical doctors, nurses, caregivers, pharmacists, and researchers engaging in epileptology, neurology and neuropharmacology, and anybody who are elaborating for a benefit of patients with epilepsy.

Steel Industry - Stephen Cooney - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Steel Industry - Stephen Cooney - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Steel prices remain at historically elevated levels. The rapid growth of steel production and demand in China is widely considered as a major cause of the increases in both steel prices and the prices of steel-making inputs. Steel companies have achieved much greater pricing power, in part through an ongoing consolidation of the industry. Most of the integrated side of the industry, nearly half of U.S. production, is controlled by just two companies: U.S. Steel, the traditional industry leader, and Mittal Steel, itself the result of multiple international mergers. Moreover, Mittal in 2006 merged with the global number-two producer, Arcelor. Nucor and Gerdau have been active major consolidators of U.S. minimill production. U.S. steel production in 2005 was 104.6 million tons, a 5% decline from the high level of 2004. The net decline in output was mainly on the integrated side of the industry, which has continuously lost share. Imports also fell from the high level of 2004, although they rebounded by nearly 50% in early 2006. Input prices, especially ferrous scrap and iron ore, remain high and have contributed to higher production costs, which have been largely passed along to industrial consumers. The growth of China contributed to a large increase in demand for both steel and steel-making inputs. China has become both the world''s largest steel-maker and steel consumer. This new book presents the latest analyses on this critical industry.
