The Power to Care - Erez Zverling - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Power to Care - Erez Zverling - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

What happens when men and women feel powerful in intimate relationships? When does power corrupt and when does it lead to positive consequences, such as increased sensitivity to others' needs, personal growth, and social responsibility? This book offers anyone interested in such questions a clear and accessible depiction of the effects of social power, based on cutting-edge theory and research. The book starts with a general discussion on the ways power influences individuals. The role of one's personality, goals, and culture seem to play a decisive role in whether power leads to benevolent or malevolent consequences. Some effects of power are more intuitively understood (eg: taking from or contributing to a common resource, or aggressive responses in parents who feel powerless), while other effects regard much more surprising phenomena (eg: self-fulfilling prophecies, stopping an annoying fan, or forgiveness for a transgression). Following the description of this social-psychological mechanism, this book discusses the cultural and developmental circumstances in which power is experienced. Culturally acquired gender-roles, experiencing racism, egoistic vs. altruistic motivations, and defensive tendencies -- all influence what men and women want in intimate relationships, and the way power can motivate them to attain their goals. These circumstances may explain the gender differences found in the results of three experiments, described in Chapter 4. In these experiments, men and women in long-term, intimate relationships reacted differently to a temporary sense of power, in terms of their tendency to self-focus, take the perspective of others, and objectify their relationship partners. The last section discusses the seemingly contradictory beliefs of professionals and laymen alike, that power corrupts, but that the empowerment processes yields positive results. In this section, the role of power and empowerment processes is discussed, mainly in macro-level interventions, in intimate partner violence (for both victims and perpetrators), overcoming addiction, and in policy practice (eg: in court verdicts regarding cases of post-divorce relocation of custodial parents).

A Closer Look at Social Sustainability - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

A Closer Look at Social Sustainability - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Social sustainability, as an integral dimension of sustainability, means durability or perpetuity in social structure and function. Simply speaking, social sustainability engages recycling and waste reduction in social life. Such engagement necessarily requires social actions such as community development and care, volunteering, mutuality, and socialization or enculturation to maintain social integration, health, and culture. Community development consists in urban renewal and related aid, including volunteering and its organization for mutual care, particularly for elders. The care also transpires in public support for organ transplantation to rehabilitate precarious patients. Such social action crucially hinges on cultural or ethical orientations such as egalitarianism, paternalism, and Confucianism, notably in Chinese context. The social actions, its cultural bases, and social well-being together constitute social sustainability elaborated in this volume. Essentially, this volume presents original evidence based on unprecedented empirical research to reveal, consolidate, and advance theories and principles for social sustainability. The volume thereby elaborates and unpacks structural and functional mechanisms to achieve social sustainability. Such mechanisms are evident in the research to unravel six facets of social sustainability, namely, urban renewal, community integration, volunteering commitment, eldercare, kidney transplantation, and social value orientations. All these perpetuate social commitment, solidarity, and regeneration, and prevent social risks, losses, and breakdown.

During the 115th Congress, several bipartisan bills were introduced that aimed to expand the number of telehealth services that are covered under Medicare. Telehealth is the electronic delivery of a health care service via a technological method. Health care providers use telehealth to improve patients access to and quality of care. Under Medicare, these patients are likely to live in rural areas, be under the age of 65 and be disabled. The first chapter in this book examines legislation as it relates to expanding telehealth services, including the five conditions that a telehealth service must meet to be covered and paid for under Medicare Part B. The second chapter focuses on the background and key issues surrounding biologics and biosimilars. Biologics and biosimilars frequently require special handling (such as refrigeration) and processing to avoid contamination by microbes and other unwanted substances. Also, they are usually administered to patients via injection or infused directly into the bloodstream. For these reasons, biologics often are referred to as specialty drugs. The cost of specialty drugs, including biologics, can be extremely high. The next chapter is a two-page report on a recent experiment in the United States using the gene modification tool CRISPR to target a disease gene in human embryos which raised optimism about promising medical advances, generated scientific debate as well as renewed debate about longstanding ethical issues. The fourth chapter provides a brief history of FDA drug regulation, describes FDAs early risk management programs, and focuses on the agencys current risk management authorities, specifically risk evaluation and mitigation strategies (REMS). The chapter also discusses issues that have arisen as a result of REMS, particularly the impact on generic drug competition. The last chapter of this book addresses frequently asked questions about government and private-sector policies that affect drug prices and availability. Among the prescription drug topics covered are federally funded research and development, regulation of direct-to-consumer advertising, legal restrictions on reimportation and federal price negotiation.

Network Theory and Analysis - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

In Network Theory and Analysis, the authors begin by examining the resource curse that explains the tendency of natural resource rich economies to perform poorly economically, as well as how these resources mediate other development challenges like poor governance, corruption, excessive borrowing, currency movement, neglect of manufacturing and agricultural sectors and violent conflict. They argue that the conceptualization of the curse suffers from methodological nationalism where state weaknesses and strengths are regarded as the main factors that condition the impact of resources. Next, a study focusing on Brazils public health care is presented, suggesting that physicians with more professional connections probably take on more diverse professional occupations. Establishing policies like limiting weekly workload in the public health care system may lead to improving the efficiency of the overall network. Following this, the book examines social network analysis, the process of Identifying relationships between organizations, people, and connected information entities by mapping. The authors pay particular attention to the connection between actors, sense of independence, and emergent impacts. In the subsequent chapter, insight on IP addressing is provided, as well as on different IP addressing systems available today. The details of the prefix notation and CIDR notation are explained, and the various fields of the IPv4 header are discussed. Lastly, the various fields of the IPv6 and the difference between the IPv4 and the IPv6 addressing system are examined.

Prescription for Change - Laure Paquette - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Prescription for Change - Laure Paquette - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

This book focuses on the use of strategy for the purposes of managing and controlling change in health services. The book explains the application of strategy to the management and control of change in health services, as well as providing some of the groundwork for professionals, managers or not, who are charged with or interested in change. Also the book provides tools for change that can be used by anyone, inside or outside the health care system, at any level and in a unit of any size. It also provides everyone in a particular organisation with a common set of ideas and a common vocabulary. Strategy can enhance existing approaches to informing the decision-making process by restoring the context to models and analytical approaches, which otherwise strip research of contextual issues and their relevance to the complex pathways of health and empirical findings of population. Strategy also offers a vehicle for bringing society''s preferences, even when not rational, into the decision-making process, for balancing uncertainty and certainty, and for balancing complexity and simplicity. The goal of this book is to propose that strategy can be a suitable foundation for the analysis of various actors and events, as well as the prescription of a course of action in health care systems and in the provision of health services. By taking into account strategic interventions as well as strategic interactions, it is possible to predict and therefore to foster change among actors and within organisations.
