Grid Technology & Applications - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Grid Technology & Applications - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Grid computing involves the sharing of distributed resources such as supercomputers, clusters, storage, instrumentation and people. Such resources are typically identified with different organisations and are made available to others through a computational middleware. The construction and development of such middlewares is the fundamental idea behind the term Grid Computing. The idea of a computational grid is analogous to an electric power network (grid(, where power generators are distributed, but the users are able to access electric power without bothering about the source of energy and its location. Applications developers need to be able to use vast amounts of computing power quickly and easily, without the huge investment in infrastructure. Over the last number of years advances have been made in this area of computing, such that it is now feasible to create, deploy, and execute large scale applications. Such applications can be either compute intensive or data intensive, or indeed a combination of both. Supporting applications within the different Grid computing systems is providing interesting and challenging aspects for future development of such systems. As our understanding of the applications being developed evolves, so does the requirements of the Grid systems selected to execute these tasks. The aim of this book is to provide an insight into some of the current developments in Grid technologies and applications that execute on these technologies and can be used by graduate/postgraduate students, researchers, and educators. It can also serve as a good reference book for the practitioners in this field. The book consists of a collection of articles from experts in their fields. The book is split into these two sections: *Algorithms and Techniques, *Methodology, Middleware and Tools.

Electricity Delivery & Security - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

The federal government first supported a program for energy storage and electric power system technology during the 1970s, before the establishment of the Department of Energy (DOE). In the early days, the program was focused mainly on energy storageespecially to even out the variable power production from wind and solar technologiesbut also to support large coal and nuclear power plants. The development of computer capacity and miniaturisation has expanded the ability of grid operators to monitor and control electric power flows. The subsequent increase in networking of computerised devices for grid data collection and control advanced the ability of operators to anticipate, avoid, and otherwise mitigate potential power crises, such as blackouts. However, in more recent years, the computerisation and networking have become vulnerable to unwanted computer-driven intrusions and disruptions, revealing a new cybersecurity challenge for electric power system technology. The nations energy infrastructure is diverse and complex. It includes distributed networks, varied system structures (electricity, oil, and natural gas), an array of operating models (public and private), and different systems in both the physical space and cyberspace. The energy sector consists of thousands of electricity, oil, and natural gas assets1 that are geographically dispersed and provide for all nationally important systems and networks. Thus, interdependency within the sector and across the nations critical infrastructure sectors is significant. Coordinating the security and resilience of energy assets is complicated by the borderless nature of energy and reliance on predominantly privately owned infrastructure. This book examines the federal oversight of electricity delivery and security. It also discusses activities and funding of electricity delivery and security.

Maximum Power Point Tracking - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Maximum Power Point Tracking: Background, Implementation and Classification presents state-of-art of existing conventional maximum power point techniques, along with shading mitigation techniques, and compares them on various parameters. Photovoltaic systems include storage batteries when there is surplus power to provide electricity on demand. A suitable charge controller is needed for interfacing the solar photovoltaic module(s) with the battery bank. As such, attention has been made to attribute more features to the controller which will enhance the efficiency and controllability, and to monitor the health of the battery being charged. The authors review the considerations for maximum power point tracking in large utility scale photovoltaic systems and small-scale residential photovoltaic systems. A set of characteristics is proposed and criteria is defined to evaluate the suitability of a technique. In the penultimate study, power storage systems in ~100 W level are developed, which consist of direct current-alternating current converters, spherical Si solar cells, a maximum power point tracking controller, and lithium-ion batteries. Two types of inverters were used: SiC metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) and conventional Si MOSFETs. In closing, the authors propose a simplified control stratagem to offer optimal power output power from a variable speed grid connected wind energy conversion system.

Atherosclerosis - Silvana Jovanova - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Atherosclerosis - Silvana Jovanova - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects medium and large-sized arteries. It begins after birth and the progression depends on several factors - traditional triad: hypertension, hyperlipidemia and diabetes mellitus, then age, sex, smoking and sedentary life-style. At the beginning atherosclerosis is asymptomatic and we cannot estimate appropriately its frequency, but its complications - coronary artery diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, peripheral arterial diseases, which occur late, are responsible for more than half of the yearly mortality in the world. Unfortunately, sudden cardiac death may be the first clinical manifestation. The incipient event is endothelial dysfunction, as a result of injury, caused by high level of cholesterol [especially w-density-lipoprotein LDL], hyperglycemia, hypertension, smoking, infectious agents, and toxins. Endothelial cells overexpress adhesion molecules - vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 [VCAM-1] and increases recruitment of inflammatory cells - monocytes [Mo], T-cells and subsequent release of monocyte chemo-attractant protein-1 [MCP-1] that results in additional leucocytes recruitment. Injured endothelium allows migration of inflammatory cells that release cytokines and lipids into the intima. That leads to cytokine-mediated progression of atherosclerosis and oxidation of LDL. Macrophages [MP] take up oxi-LDL and form foam-cell. They have metabolic activity and produce cytokines, proliferation of smooth muscle cells and formulate athero-fibrose plaque. Atherosclerotic plaque is composed of superficial layer - fibrose cap and lipid core, that consists of foam cells, extracellular lipid and necrotic cellular debris. It progresses as a result of accumulation of lipid and proliferation of smooth muscle cells and results in luminal narrowing of the arteries which leads to compromised blood and oxygen supply to the tissues. The gradually growing atherosclerotic plaques have thick fibrose cap and are stable. They cause symptoms of stable angina. Rapidly growing plaques cause unstable coronary artery disease. These plaques are mainly composed of lipids and have tiny fibrose cap that is prone to fissuring or rupture. Intraplaque hemorrhage from microvessels in plaque initiate platelet adhesion and activation of coagulation cascade that leads to platelet thrombus formation, i.e. promote thrombogenesis. Knowledge of the pathogenesis of the atherothrombosis modifies the diagnostic and therapeutic approach. Conclusion: Attention should be focused on the management of three points: 1. Endothelial dysfunction [correction of modified risk factors: hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, life-style-smoking, physical activity and food], 2. Atherosclerosis [modification of the inflammatory cascade, i.e. elimination of inflammatory pathways and inhibition of oxidation of LDL], 3. Thrombogenesis [inhibition of platelet adhesion, activation and aggregation].

Antiterrorist Emergency Ventilation - Lina Zhao - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Antiterrorist Emergency Ventilation - Lina Zhao - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

There are two kinds of antiterrorist emergency ventilation system. One is to defend indoor environment against chemical and biological agent (CBA) attacks. The other is to supply calmative gas to incapacitate terrorists when they hold hostages in public buildings. What kind of system and ventilation strategy can be used for antiterrorism, and how to make decision are introduced in the book. There are six sections in the book. How the emergency ventilation systems work is introduced in the first section. The second section is on the theory of contaminant dispersion and identification of contaminant source. For the theory of contaminant dispersion, both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method and analytical formula of contaminant distribution are introduced. For the theory of contaminant source identification, an algorithm to identify the position and intensity of contaminant source with limited number of sensors is proposed and demonstrated for its effectiveness. The third section is on the evacuation model and evaluation of exposure risk. Both cellular automata (CA) model and spatial-grid evacuation model (SGEM) are introduced for modelling evacuation process. The relative exposure risk index, EFCS, and absolute exposure risk index, PIR, are introduced to evaluate the exposure risk of contaminant. Both the second section and third section are the fundamental of emergency ventilation. Based on section 2 and 3, the ventilation strategy and decision-making are introduced for emergency ventilation against contaminant suddenly released in public building in section 4 and for emergency ventilation to rescue hostages held by terrorists in section 5, respectively. Section 6 is the summary of the whole book.

Walking Science's Narrow Path - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Walking Science's Narrow Path - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Zavia Janjić may mostly be remembered for his pioneering contributions that allowed for the advancement of weather forecasting, which we witnessed over the last 40 years. In the scientific community, he is valued for his remarkable knowledge and intellect that formed the basis of his legacy of innovation, rigour and achievement in atmospheric science. His accomplishments were honored with numerous prestigious awards, and his ingenuity, brightness, kindness and humour kindled respect and dedication in his many colleagues and students. Upon Zavia Janjićs passing, collaborators and students endeavored to describe his person and his work by assembling the details of his journey on the narrow path to true success in science -- a path that is reserved for a select few. As a young student, Zavia started work on his first limited area numerical weather prediction model, which became operational at the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute of the former Yugoslavia in 1978. Janjić was able to solve several difficult scientific questions during the model design and development phase, which helped lay the foundation for his models. Starting in the mid-to-late eighties, Professor Janjić worked on parameterisations of numerous physical processes. This work developed over the longest portion of his career, lasting over 20 years. It included the development of Eta, Weather Research and Forecasting Nonhydrostatic Mesoscale Model (WRF-NMM) and Non-hydrostatic Meso-scale Model on B grid (NMMB), which were National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) weather prediction models. Readers of this book will also enjoy a reprint of an interview with Professor Janjić; a professional biography with Professor Janjićs specific contributions and references to scientific papers; commemorative letters from several directors of major meteorological centers describing how they saw Professor Janjićs work in atmospheric science; and photos and documents from Janjićs life and work. Interlacing his life story with a working biography, writers and editors of this book hope to inspire the coming generation of scientists, as well as provide a timely tribute to Professor Janjićs contribution to atmospheric science.

Green Movement in Business - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Green Movement in Business - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Today the energy sources used to create electricity differ in many ways, including in their environmental impacts. In the United States, conventional means of electricity generation use fossil or nuclear fuels--forms of power generation that impact human health and the environment through air emissions and other effects. Despite advances in pollution controls over the last 30 years, conventional power generation is still the nation''s single largest source of industrial air pollution. Electricity markets are changing, however, offering cleaner ways of producing power and giving many consumers the ability to choose how their power is generated. One of these choices is power from renewable sources that is marketed as green power. Innovative organisations are encouraging the use of these new sources of green power and, at the same time, are reducing their own impact on the environment. In some parts of the United States, the deregulation of electricity has enabled consumers to choose the provider of their electric power and thus to buy green power from their chosen supplier. In regulated markets, too, hundreds of utilities now offer their customers the opportunity to purchase green power through green-pricing" programs. Even in areas where consumers cannot buy green power directly, renewable energy certificates (RECs) are available in every state to allow consumers to support green power. While no form of electric power generation is completely benign, electricity generated from renewable resources such as solar, wind, geothermal, small and low-impact hydro power, and biomass has proved to be environmentally preferable to electricity generated from conventional energy sources such as coal, oil, nuclear, and natural gas. The Guide to Purchasing Green Power focuses on electricity generated from renewable energy resources, both delivered through the grid and generated on-site. By buying green power instead of conventional power, consumers can reduce the environmental impact caused by their use of electricity and fossil fuel. For instance, on average, every kilowatt-hour (kWh) of renewable power avoids the emission of more than one pound of carbon dioxide. Because of the sheer quantities of energy involved, consumers of a large amount of electricity may have an enormous environmental impact. If the typical commercial facility switched to 100 percent renewable power or used RECs to offset emissions, this could amount to thousands of tons of emissions avoided each year. A wide range of organisations have purchased green power: federal, state, and local governments; universities; businesses; nonprofits; and individual consumers. By purchasing green power, these organisations are both helping the environment and meeting their own environmental goals. The many other benefits to buying green power range from financial benefits to public relations and even national security. As of the end of 2003, nearly 1,650 megawatts(MW) of new renewable generating capacity had been added to meet the United States'' demand for green power. This capacity is enough to meet the annual electricity needs of more than 500,000 houses. Leading organisations are finding that green power is an effective part of a strategic energy management plan to achieve environmental, financial, and other goals. Successful energy management plans are often a "portfolio analysis" that considers options such as energy efficiency, load management, power purchases, on-site generation, and non-electric (thermal) energy needs. As with any investment portfolio, the best mix of these options depends on the particular situation. Because buying green power is still relatively uncommon in today''s energy markets and because these markets offer a wide range of choices, this book provides leading-research for organisations that have decided to buy green power but want help in figuring out how to do it, as well as for organisations that are still considering the merits of buying green power.
