This well-known text, attributed to Richard of Chichester and adeptly amended by Alan Hommerding, is set for unison voices with the option of a second part. It is simple but still affords room for a small choir (or children's choir) to improve: some large intervals, meter changes, and the necessity of watching the conductor carefully. Following the dynamic and tempo markings will insure a perfomance that lives up to the "dolce" nature of the anthem. Accompaniment is organ (preferred) or piano: the flexibility required for a sensitive presentation would be a good task for a student. Duration 2:30

Come By Here

Yes, it's KUM BA YAH! But this sensitive and sweet setting for SATB and Piano is not to be missed. In one spot it is suggested that the piano plays a guided improvisation over the choir singing neutral syllables. In another there is the option to sing unaccompanied. There is a quote of the hymn tune NICAEA (Holy, Holy, Holy) in the accompaniment. An emotional high point occurs when the sections each sing out their situations, "longing, falling, hiding, rising, aching, laughing, praising, finding, breathing, dying." Then answer together, "You are here." This work hits every high mark in terms of vocal writing, a skillful accompaniment, and a beautiful effect.

Unlike usual settings of this text, this creative setting evokes awe and mystery by using an original, almost chant-like melody anchored by piano or four handbells (within a two octave set.) The bells comment intermittently then provide pitch support for the singers in way that adds to the other-worldly mood. Duration: 2:30

Come Before the Table

The music is constructed with a duet or semi-chorus singing above a choir ostinato with hand drum, creating a multicultural, polyrhythmic effect. As with all such constructions, what looks a little complex on the page ends up feeling completely natural when sung. Day of Arising

An accessible arrangement for two-part voices of a hymn with text by Susan Palo Cherwien and tune RAABE by Carl Schalk. The text compares the story of Jesus appearing on the roadway to the disciples with our own lives and how Christ is revealed to us through the breaking of bread. Optional oboe or clarinet makes this interesting and effective for choirs of all ages. Duration: 3:30

Blest Morn : Three American Hymns

A collection of three American Christmas songs arranged for flute and organ (or piano). The first, Hail the Blest Morn, is a Kentucky folk song, featuring modal harmonies and a gentle, dancing quality. This is followed by the familiar spiritual, Mary Had a Baby, simply shaped and expressive. An easy but striking congregational hymn setting of the tune RUSTINGTON to a text by Shirley Erena Murray. Stanzas one and three are in unison (three with descanting "ahs"). Stanza two invites the choir and even the congregation to sing in four parts! This can be as streamlined as you need it to be, but can also expand by use of the optional Brass Quintet, Handbells, Timpani, and Crash Cymbals. Sometimes setting a very familiar text to a new tune causes the words to land on the ear with new meaning. Such is the case for this lyrical, flowing SATB setting by Michael Larkin. Four verses with a contrasting third verse. Duration: 3:00

T. S. Variations

Commissioned by both the Royal College of Canadian Organists and the American Guild of Organists for their joint convention, held in Montreal in 2017. The American premiere was on February 23, 2018, by Duo Majoya, organ duet, Marnie Giesbrecht and Joachim Segger.Written months after the birth the composer's son, Tallis Sebastian, the idea of a series of variations on Tallis’ canon was a "no-brainer.” Composed for two wonderful virtuoso organists, the piece can be effectively realized on large cathedral size organs, or on more modest instruments. The work spans a variety of moods from playful to rather intense, not unlike the young boy who provided theinspiration for its theme. Duration: 11:00.

Requiem aeternam

J. Christopher Pardini's Requiem aeternam is a solemn and harmonically engaging composition for STB voices with viola or cello and organ. It begins with an ethereal statement of the E minor theme with words from the Requiem Mass, first by TB voices and then repeated with treble voices. (One might consider using children's voices.) A viola interlude leads into the middle section in E major, where voices gently but insistently entreat God to shine perpetual light on the dead. The original theme, this time with voices at pianissimo, returns after another viola interlude. The viola takes up the prayer [theme] in the end, sparingly underscored by voices, and harmonies gently move backto E major to accompany the choir's final, hopeful "Amen." A light and playful ritornello introduces the piece and each subsequent verse, and concludes as well. Playful and charming. Part of the National Lutheran Choir Series. Let Us Go Rejoicing : Fanfare, Introit, and Procession for the Dedication of a Church

Peter Latona's setting of the Entrance Antiphon for the Dedication of a Church is a perfect balance of solemnity and festivity. It opens with a brass and organ fanfare (echoed later by organ alone) and a chant-like choral section. Then the antiphon unfolds—easily sung by the assembly, while the verses offer some "meat" for SATB choir. Brass Quintet is used well throughout, supporting the antiphons and decorating the verses. Appropriate also for church anniversaries, the Feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran, Christ the King C, or other festive liturgies. Commissioned by a church choir in honor of their director, this piece has a flowing accompaniment and energetic choir parts. The text, based on Psalm 30, brings a message of joy after darkness, dancing after sorrow. Accessible SATB writing with some brief divisi and one short a cappella passage. Duration: 3:15
