Remembering Oscar Romero and the Martyrs of El Salvador - John Thiede - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

With the Beatification of Monseñor Oscar Romero, our current Pope Francis has asked theologians to consider how we might allow for an expanded definition for martyrdom in the 21st century. Remembering Oscar Romero and the Martyrs of El Salvador responds to that challenge. How do we name Oscar Romero, Rutilio Grande, the U.S. churchwomen, and the Jesuits and two laywomen killed at the UCA as martyrs? Is it a new category with a new definition? Or is it simply an amplification of what we have long considered Christian witness? While there is a long history of martyrdom in Latin America, this book elaborates on four case studies for martyrdom focusing on the reality in El Salvador: Rutilio Grande, S.J. killed in 1977, Archbishop Oscar Romero killed in 1980, the U.S. churchwomen killed in 1980, and the six members of the UCA Jesuit community and their two female collaborators killed in 1989. Insights from the work of Jon Sobrino illuminate these case studies. First, his Christological insights from Jesus the Liberator and Christ the Liberator are used to analyze the reality of martyrdom, particularly in reference to the terms martyr, crucified people, and martyred people. Second, his more recent articles challenge a strict interpretation of the traditional definition of martyrdom, especially focusing on his terms Jesuanic martyr, a martyr for justice, and even a more polemic suggestion of an anonymous Christian martyr. Finally, the book concludes by combining Sobrino''s insights and the reality of martyrdom today, updated with the recent scholarship in Romero''s beatification process which attempts to show Romero as a martyr. In the end, the book hopes to offer some suggestions for an expanded definition of martyrdom in the 21st century. By responding to the call of Pope Francis for an expanded definition, the reality of martyrdom in Latin America might be better understood and applied to the universal church.

The Egyptian Press and Coverage of Local and International Events - Mohamed El Bendary - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

The Egyptian press has a large readership and potential influence on public opinion in Egypt and the Arab world. The Egyptian Press and Coverage of Local and International Events analyzes this understudied area. Written in Egypt, the book is formed of five chapters and analyzes in qualitative and quantitative methods close to 300 newspaper and magazine articles. It studies the Egyptian press and investigates the challenges it faces to be compatible with that in the west, and evaluates the renowned book Four Theories of the press and whether today''s Egyptian press can fit in one of those theories. It also looks at the concepts of framing and discourse analysis adopted later. The author examines how the Egyptian press framed the Sudanese refugees'' riot in Cairo in December 2005 by the top thirteen Egyptian national, independent, and party newspapers. It found that independent and party newspapers enjoy more freedom than national ones in criticizing government and the way police tackled the protest. However, independent newspapers were more vigorous in their criticism than party ones. The author observes that the weekly magazines tended to frame their coverage in a somewhat anti-government slant, accusing authorities and ferry owners of failure and corruption. Finally, the book compares coverage of the Israeli War in Lebanon in July 2006 by Egypt''s giant semi-official daily newspaper Al-Ahram with that by two prominent, non-Egyptian pan-Arab dailies Al-Hayat and Asharq Al-Awsat. He finds that while Al-Hayat and Asharq Al-Awsat, which are owned by Saudi businessmen, portrayed Hizbullah in an unfavorable manner, Al-Ahram was somewhat favorable in its coverage of the Lebanese resistance group.

The Dilemma of Sustainability in the Age of Globalization - Mohamed El Kamel Bakari - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

The Dilemma of Sustainability in the Age of Globalization - Mohamed El Kamel Bakari - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

The Dilemma of Sustainability in the Age of Globalization: A Quest for a Paradigm of Development offers an exhaustive overview of the different political, social, economic, and cultural circumstances that paved the way for the inception of sustainable development. It particularly traces the evolution of this project in an unpropitious context of neo-liberal capitalism and globalization. By means of an in-depth critical comparative analysis of the two phenomena of sustainable development and globalization, this book highlights aspects of both their divergence and convergence on issues such as development, man-nature relationship, and society. This distinctive approach pinpoints the theoretical and factual aspects of clash and affinity between globalization and sustainability and spotlights some potential harmonization between the two on different levels. On the whole, this book covers a few gaps in the contemporary literature that heightened the need for analysis of the viability of implementing the project of sustainable development in a context of neoliberal capitalism. Given the highly interdisciplinary nature of its topic, a holistic approach is utilized throughout this book, integrating historical, literary, economic, political, and scientific material. The first part of this book is largely based on a critical comparative analysis of the two vying paradigms of development by means of a thorough juxtaposition of their theoretical and ideological underpinnings and backed up by lucid examples, statistics, and case-studies. In later sections, this book provides an analysis and discussion of both the extrinsic and intrinsic obstacles to promoting sustainability in the current socio-economic paradigm of development, and closes by offering glimpses of hope for the future of humankind by underlining the potential of new initiatives to revive sustainable development in the 21st century.
