The Dark Side of Zionism - Baylis Thomas - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

The Dark Side of Zionism - Baylis Thomas - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

The Dark Side of Zionism: Israel''s Quest for Security through Dominance arises out of the scholarship of the ''new historians,'' a group of mostly Israeli scholars who have uncovered a history widely ignored in the popular media. Baylis Thomas argues that both the early Zionists and, later, the Israelis sought their security through the military domination of the indigenous Arab population of Palestine. This strategy required both avoiding negotiations with the Palestinian-Arabs and provoking the weak Arab states-opposed to the Israeli takeover of Palestine-into entering wars they would lose. The role of British imperial power was crucial in this early history, as was the later U.S. support of Israel, right or wrong. Thomas explores the larger context of this history in chapters on colonization, hegemony, weapons diplomacy, terrorism, nationalism, religion, Zionism, and prospects for resolution of the conflict. While students and scholars of Middle Eastern studies and international relations will find this book valuable, it is intended for the intelligent general reader who is curious about current events yet puzzled about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Israel''s national identity, founded on the memory of being victims of the Holocaust, focuses on current events that seem consistent with the past, even as the nation uses force to thwart Palestinian national aspirations. The Dark Side of Zionism argues that peace for both Israelis and Palestinians can only come if Israel relinquishes military rule.

The Trickster Brain - David Williams - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

The Trickster Brain - David Williams - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

Until recently, scientific and literary cultures have existed side-by-side but most often in parallel universes, without connection. The Trickster Brain: Neuroscience, Evolution, and Nature by David Williams addresses the premise that humans are a biological species stemming from the long process of evolution, and that we do exhibit a universal human nature, given to us through our genes. From this perspective, literature is shown to be a product of our biological selves. By exploring central ideas in neuroscience, evolutionary biology, linguistics, music, philosophy, ethics, religion, and history, Williams shows that it is the circuitry of the brain’s hard-wired dispositions that continually create similar tales around the world: “archetypal” stories reflecting ancient tensions that arose from our evolutionary past and the very construction of our brains. The book asserts that to truly understand literature, one must look at the biological creature creating it. By using the lens of science to examine literature, we can see how stories reveal universal aspects of the biological mind. The Trickster character is particularly instructive as an archetypal character who embodies a raft of human traits and concerns, for Trickster is often god, devil, musical, sexual, silver tongued, animal, and human at once, treading upon the moral dictates of culture. Williams brings together science and the humanities, demonstrating a critical way of approaching literature that incorporates scientific thought.

Is Marx's Theory of Profit Right? - - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

This collection focuses on a long-running debate over the logical validity of Karl Marx’s theory that exploitation is the exclusive source of capitalists’ profits. The “Fundamental Marxian Theorem” was long thought to have shown that orthodox Marxian economics succeeds in replicating Marx’s conclusion. The debate begins with Andrew Kliman’s disproof of that claim. On one side of the debate, representing orthodox Marxian economics, are contributions by Simon Mohun and Roberto Veneziani. Although they concede that their simultaneist models cannot replicate Marx’s theory of profit in all cases, they insist that this is as good as it gets. On the other side, representing the temporal single-system interpretation of Marx’s theory (TSSI), are contributions by Kliman and Alan Freeman. They argue that his theory is logically valid, since it can indeed be replicated when it is understood in accordance with the TSSI. While the debate initially focused on logical concerns, issues of pluralism, truth, and scientificity increasingly assumed center stage. In his introduction to the volume, Nick Potts situates the debate in its historical context and argues forcefully that the arguments of the orthodox Marxist economists, and the manner in which those arguments were couched, were “suppressive and contrary to scientific norms.”The volume concludes with a 2014 debate, in which many of the same issues re-surfaced, between the philosopher Robert Paul Wolff and proponents of the TSSI.

The Popular Economy in Urban Latin America - - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

The Popular Economy in Urban Latin America - - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

The Popular Economy in Urban Latin America: Informality, Materiality and Gender in Commerce advances comparative knowledge and theoretical reflections on urban popular economies in Latin America by going beyond the lenses of so-called informal and street economies. It develops a cultural-economic perspective on the popular urban economy and provides new insights in key concepts such as informality, materiality, and gender. Based on ethnographic work and archival research, the authors of this volume address cases in Brazil, Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru. The guiding questions of these case studies are: which actors, and with what agencies, are forming and transforming street markets and other place-based economies, and with what effects? What are the emerging lines of tension in these particular economies? Urban economies in Latin America are becoming increasingly diverse and internally stratified. Itinerant traders work side-by-side with permanent street and market vendors, shopkeepers, and wholesalers who conduct business trips to neighboring countries and China several times a year. International trade and investment as well as technological change foster new forms of interaction between traders, companies and customers, but also create new imbalances in economic communities. Remaining sensitive to history, gender, and urban politics, this volume offers an ethnographically informed cultural and socio-material perspective on how popular economies and commerce thrive, transform, and persist in Latin American cities today.

Reality and Waves - Mark Ellingsen - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

Reality and Waves - Mark Ellingsen - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

Reality and Waves: A Quantum Physics Cosmology, Philosophy of Religion, and Ethic explores how the findings of Quantum Physics have rich implications for coping with the realities of everyday life and for developing a Philosophy of Life. Drawing on the insights of an early founder of the discipline, Werner Heisenberg, Ellingsen notes that the study of microscopic realities of the atom results in “weird” findings about reality, that it does not behave as predictably as other Sciences would lead us to think. The uncertainty about these realities emerges because the components of the atom often behave like waves. Drawing on Heisenberg’s reflections it is argued that these findings can be applied to visible reality. Just as light is in waves, even our brains embody waves. Public opinion and historical eras are also waves. This vision of reality explains the continuities and discontinuities in life, the highs and lows. Relying on Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle and concept of Complementarity, aided by Augustinian thinking, the case is then made for how Religion and Science can exist side-by-side, what is provided by an appreciation of a God Who dwells in the “stuff” of matter, a God Who perhaps binds the particles and atoms into matter. The concept also helps us understand how God can both determine reality and yet not be in control in all events. In addition, it gives us confidence in dealing with the waves of life and helps us appreciate how a good God still governs in the midst of pandemics, injustices, and tragedies.
