Spheres of Insurrection - Suely Rolnik - Bog - John Wiley and Sons Ltd - Plusbog.dk

As the globalized regime of neoliberal capitalism consolidates its grip on the world, it refines the micropolitics proper to the capitalist system and makes it more perverse. This micropolitics involves the appropriation – what Suely Rolnik calls the “pimping” – of life, as it turns the life drive itself away from creation and cooperation and towards the deadening, destructive practice necessary for capital accumulation. This dynamic is the engine of what Rolnik calls the colonial-capitalistic unconscious regime. She also identifies the conditions necessary to fight against this regime – namely, a reappropriation of the life drive, the energetic basis at the heart of all life forms, human life included, and the principal source of extraction for capitalism. Drawing on examples from across the Americas, including Brazil and the United States, Rolnik examines the circumstances that have given rise to regressive, reactionary governments throughout the world. These circumstances include, at the macro level, an alliance between neoliberalism and extreme conservatism and, at the micro level, a crisis of the hegemonic subject in the face of the emergent empowerment of marginalized communities that practice other modes of subjectivation. This crucial book by one of the most prominent intellectuals in Latin America today will be of great value to anyone interested in contemporary politics and social struggles.

Getting China Wrong - Aaron L. Friedberg - Bog - John Wiley and Sons Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Getting China Wrong - Aaron L. Friedberg - Bog - John Wiley and Sons Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The West’s strategy of engagement with China has failed. More than three decades of trade and investment with the advanced democracies have left that country far richer and stronger than it would otherwise have been. But growth and development have not caused China’s rulers to relax their grip on political power, abandon their mercantilist economic policies, or accept the rules and norms of the existing international system. To the contrary: China today is more repressive at home, more aggressive abroad, and more obviously intent on establishing itself as the world’s preponderant power than at any time since the death of Chairman Mao. What went wrong? Put simply, the democracies underestimated the resilience, resourcefulness, and ruthlessness of the Chinese Communist Party. For far too long, the United States and its allies failed to take seriously the Party’s unwavering determination to crush opposition, build national power, and fulfill its ideological and geopolitical ambitions. In this timely and powerfully argued study, Aaron Friedberg identifies the assumptions underpinning engagement, describes the counterstrategy that China’s Communist Party rulers devised in order to exploit the West’s openness while defeating its plans, and explains what the democracies must do now if they wish to preserve their prosperity, protect their security, and defend their common values. Also available as an audiobook.

Practical Guide to Diagnosing Structural Movement in Buildings - M Holland - Bog - John Wiley and Sons Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Practical Guide to Diagnosing Structural Movement in Buildings - M Holland - Bog - John Wiley and Sons Ltd - Plusbog.dk

PRACTICAL GUIDE TO DIAGNOSING STRUCTURAL MOVEMENT IN BUILDINGS Concise and readable practitioner focused guide to diagnosing the causes of cracks and movement in buildings The expanded and updated Second Edition of Practical Guide to Diagnosing Structural Movement in Buildings shows how movement can manifest as cracking in the building fabric and provides a rigorous, structured approach to understanding the evidence to ensure the surveyor can confidently diagnose the cause and impact of any structural movement they encounter. The book is written in four parts, with part one describing the key principles of movement and cracking. Parts two and three describe the main features of common forms of movement and the associated crack patterns, with part two covering causes other than ground or foundation movement and part three covering movement caused by ground or foundations. Part four briefly describes the techniques used to arrest further movement or repair damage caused by movement. Topics covered in Practical Guide to Diagnosing Structural Movement in Buildings include: First principles, including crack patterns and cracks, rotational movement, weak routes, load distribution, and movement and orientation Expansion cracking, cavity wall tie corrosion, roof spread, springing from deflected beams, and overloaded floors and beams Clay heave, uneven loading, eccentric loading on foundations, drains and drain trenches, differential foundation movement, and load concentrations on foundations Repair methods, including stitching in brickwork, reinforcing brick mortar joints, tie bars, restraint straps, underpinning, grouting, and root barriers Primarily intended for the relatively inexperienced surveyor or engineer, as well as undergraduate students, Practical Guide to Diagnosing Structural Movement in Buildings focuses on identification and diagnosis, helping to correctly diagnose problems while also demonstrating a methodical approach to show and record how the diagnosis was reached, which is critical in client satisfaction.
