Serpent Sea : 4th Movement of The Seas of the Moon

The fourth movement of Robert Buckley's grandly cinematic suite describing impressions of the seas of the moon, Serpent Sea is animated, exuberant and somewhat over-the-top. It was inspired by the idea of two huge winged serpents rising out of the waves and frolicking together in a wild, barbaric dance. The pair do, however, show a more graceful side every once in a while - represented by an exotic theme that starts in the clarinet and flute. The movement ends with a wild flurry as the serpents vanish back into the sea. Dur: 3:50

MusicWorks – Grade 4 First published in 1989, this work from the late Calvin Custer epitomizes his command of orchestration and understanding of musical pacing. The familiar folk melody is stated first by a soloflute then followed by a remarkable series of variations starting with a brass choir accompanied by woodwind flourishes. An Andante variation features the woodwind choir accompanying solos by baritone and oboe, and thisleads to a striking fugue variation and bold finish. Truly symphonic band writing at its best. Commissioned by Furman University for the inauguration of its 12th president, Jay Bocook's Gloriana is based on The Faerie Queene, an incomplete English epic poem written by Edmund Spenser and dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I. In the poem, Queen Elizabeth is represented as the faerie queene herself, Gloriana. This stately work for winds and percussion has a regal quality enhanced by soaring melodies and punctuated with fanfare-like brass figures. Lux Aurumque : for Orchestra

After Eric Whitacre decided upon the poem by Edward Esch (He was immediately struck by its genuine, elegant simplicity), he had it translated into the Latin by the celebrated American poet Charles Anthony Silvestri. A simpleapproach was essential to the success of the work, and he waited patiently for the tight harmonies to shimmer and glow. Lux Aurumque transcribed for full orchestra in 2015 and was premiered with the Minnesota Orchestra in May ofthat year.
