52nd Street - Arnold Shaw - Bog - Hachette Books - Plusbog.dk

52nd Street - Arnold Shaw - Bog - Hachette Books - Plusbog.dk

Back in the thirties and forties, when New York City was the capital of the jazz world-you could hail a cab, ask the driver to take you to "The Street," and find yourself on 52nd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Musicians, jazz lovers, college students, big businessmen-everybody knew that this was "The Street that Never Slept," the Street where every night was New Year''s Eve, the Street that Variety editor Abel Green so aptly dubbed "America''s Montmartre." Here, for the price of a drink or two, you could walk through the whole history of jazz. Hot jazz was born and raised on The Street, as were the big swing bands of the thirties and the modern "cool" jazz combos of the forties. Comics like Alan King and Joey Adams got their start on the Street, as did musicians like Erroll Garner, Jack Teagarden, and Coleman Hawkins. Bessie Smith performed on the Street, and so did Count Basie, Charlie "Bird" Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, Art Tatum, Sarah Vaughn, the Dorsey Brothers, Artie Shaw, and other jazz greats.Arnold Shaw was there-as musician, composer, PR man, and just plain listener-and he recreates for us the three swinging decades that were the history if the Street: its birth in Prohibition-era speakeasies, where musicians jammed for gin or just for the fun of it; its post-Repeal blossoming as the center of the jazz universe, lined up and down on both sides with tiny, smoke-filled rooms where black and white musicians played to capacity crowds; its postwar decline as the Street became a tawdy tenderloin of strip and clip joints.

Sherman's Battle For Atlanta - Jacob Cox - Bog - Hachette Books - Plusbog.dk

Sherman's Battle For Atlanta - Jacob Cox - Bog - Hachette Books - Plusbog.dk

"After more than a century, Jacob Cox''s Atlanta remains an essential book on one of the pivotal campaigns of the Civil War."--Gary W. Gallagher In 1864 Abraham Lincoln had privately predicted his defeat in the impending election, but ten days later Atlanta fell, assuring his victory. General Jacob D. Cox (1828-1900) played a key role in the Union success at Atlanta, a city of profound strategic and political significance. At Kenesaw Mountain in June, his division seized a ridge opposite the Confederate left, allowing Sherman to flank the Confederates out of their prepared position; in late August Cox''s men served the city''s final rail line, forcing Hood''s evacuation. It was Cox''s self-professed qualities of "a bold heart, a cool hand, and practical common-sense" that later earned him the command of the entire Twenty-third Corps and the rank of major general. After the war, Cox applies those same attributes to his books, Sherman''s Battle for Atlanta and Sherman''s March to the Sea, two volumes in the landmark series Campaigns of the Civil War. In Atlanta Cox offers readers a compact, comprehensive, and balanced history of that campaign. William T. Sherman emerges as the primary hero of events, but he does not remain unscathed by Cox''s evaluation. Cox''s insightful chronicle of the campaign-from the performances of Generals Johnston''s evasive maneuvers through Hood''s three desperate attempts to dispel the Yankees to Sherman''s triumphant telegram to Washington that "Atlanta is ours, and fairly won"-has endured the scrutiny of time. Introduction by Brooks D. Simpson

Round About Midnight - Eric Nisenson - Bog - Hachette Books - Plusbog.dk

Round About Midnight - Eric Nisenson - Bog - Hachette Books - Plusbog.dk

"Full of the sort of ''I was there'' stories that enrich the late-night conversations of jazz enthusiasts but rarely end up between the covers. For anyone with an interest in Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and modern jazz, it should be required reading."--Robert Palmer, New York Times From 1975 to 1981 the jazz giant Miles Davis temporarily retired from music. Almost completely reclusive, nobody outside of a very close circle knew what was happening to him. Only one jazz writer was able to get close to him during this time: Eric Nisenson. From 1978 to 1981 Nisenson conducted dozens of interviews with Miles Davis and his associates. The result was ''Round About Midnight, an engaging firsthand account of Miles''s fascinating and difficult career. From his recordings with Charlie Parker and the birth of the cool nonet, through the Coltrane quintet, the Gil Evans-arranged masterpieces of the sixties, the landmark Kind of Blue album, the Shorter/Hancock/ Carter/Williams group, and the success of Miles''s fusion recordings of the seventies, Miles''s personality-contemplative, abruptly defiant, strong, elegant-meshed with his art to form one of the most compelling legends in the history of American music. Whole actively disdaining his audience, he sought to broaden it by incorporating elements of other musics-classical, flamenco, rock, funk-into his uncompromising jazz. This contradictory combination of contempt and a desire for recognition fueled controversy in both his public and private lives, and resulted in Miles''s lengthy self-imposed isolation. Nisenson broke through that isolation, and his biographical portrait is vivid and telling This updated edition features a new preface, new material covering Miles in the eighties, and a new recommended listening section.

Sherman's March To The Sea - Jacob Cox - Bog - Hachette Books - Plusbog.dk

Sherman's March To The Sea - Jacob Cox - Bog - Hachette Books - Plusbog.dk

"Among the most gifted and fair-minded participants who wrote about the Civil War, Jacob Cox provides modern readers with an excellent account of the final campaigns in Georgia, the Carolinas, and Tennessee."--Gary W. Gallagher Introduction by Brooks D. Simpson Often hailed as a stroke of military genius, General William T. Sherman''s decision to divide his command and his subsequent, infamous march through the interior of Georgia to the Atlantic coast inaugurated the final phase of the war. General Jacob D. Cox (1828-1900) played key roles in most of the decisive actions that followed. Left with Generals Schofield and Thomas to delay Hood''s advance, Cox led his men through the night and at Spring Hill; he supervised the construction of the fortifications that proved so effective against Hood''s assaulting columns at Franklin; at Nashville his division joined the attack on the crucial Confederate position at Shy''s Hill; and later he finished his service with Sherman in North Carolina. It was Cox''s self-professed qualities of "a bold heart, a cool head, and practical common-sense" that subsequently earned him the command of the entire Twenty-third Corps and the rank of major general. After the war, Cox applied those same attributes to his books, Sherman''s Battle for Atlanta, and Sherman''s March to the Sea, two volumes in the landmark series Campaigns of the Civil War. If readers are seeking concise, astute, and balanced accounts of Sherman''s march to the sea, the burning of Columbia, the bloody battles of Franklin and Nashville, the oft-overlooked assault on Fort Fisher (which sealed the Confederacy from Europe), and the surrender of Johnston''s Army, Cox''s single volume provides all the scope, detail, and color that these critical campaigns demand.

Forever Nerdy - Brian Posehn - Bog - Hachette Books - Plusbog.dk

Forever Nerdy - Brian Posehn - Bog - Hachette Books - Plusbog.dk

The first memoir by beloved comedian, actor, and writer Brian Posehn, hilariously detailing what it''s like to grow up as and remain a nerd, with a foreword by Patton Oswalt Brian Posehn is a successful and instantly recognizable comedian, actor, and writer. He also happens to be a giant nerd. That''s partly because he''s been obsessed with such things as Dungeons & Dragons, comic books, and heavy metal since he was a child; the other part is because he fills out every bit of his 6''7'''' frame. Brian''s always felt awkward and like a perpetual outsider, but he found his way through the difficulties of growing up by escaping into the worlds of Star Wars , D&D, and comics, and by rocking his face off. He was a nerd long before it was cool (and that didn''t help his situation much), but his passions proved time and again to be the safe haven he needed to persevere and thrive in a world in which he was far from comfortable. Brian, now balls deep in middle age with a wife, child, and thriving career, still feels like an outsider and is as big a nerd as ever. But that''s okay, because in his five decades of nerdom he''s discovered that the key to happiness is not growing up. You can be a nerd forever and find success that way. because somehow along the way the nerds won. Forever Nerdy is a celebration of growing up nerdy and different. This isn''t Brian''s life story, just some bizarre and hilarious stories from his life, along with a captivating look back at nearly fifty years of nerd culture. Being a nerd hasn''t always been easy, but somehow this self-hating nerd who suffered from depression was able to land his dream job, get the girl, and learn to fit in. Kind of. See how he did it while managing to remain forever nerdy.
