Contorni

Contorni, written in 1970, comes from the experimental period of Pál Károlyi (1934-2015). 'Outlines, contours' suggests the title, and accordingly the duo of bassoon and piano experience different modes of sounding the instruments, often putting extreme contrasts side by side in tempo and dynamics. The work is dedicated to József Vajda and Zoltán Kontra.

Trance - for violin solo and ensemble (2013)

Trance means an altered state of mind in which a person becomes capable of communicating with spirits by the means of a ritual. Echo like sounds have a significant role in the piece, they were achieved by aleatoric as well as metric materials. Our p rehistoric ancestors experienced echo as a side effect of rituals they performed, basically they heard the echo of their own voices but they believed these sounds came from their ancestors. As 2013 was the 90th anniversary of György Ligeti's birth, m y piece pays respect to his musical heritage. In this regard the piece references Ligeti's artistic aesthetics and in some cases uses direct musical quotations.(Máté Bella, 2013)Thework won first prize at the 2013 New Hungarian Music Forum In memoriam György Ligeti composer's competition in chamber music category. It was premiered by Katalin Kokas and the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gergely Vajda on 25 September 2013 in Budapest.

Az otthon éjjel : Text by Orsolya Karafiáth

Máté Bella's choral work for children Home at Night was commissioned by the town of Debrecen for the 26th Béla Bartók International Choir Competition in 2014. Its text is the first poem with the subtitle Spiders of the cycle with the same title written by Orsolya Karafiáth. The piece effectively represents the dreamworld of the poem with its strange and sinister atmosphere, which in the end is dispersed by awakening.

Three chinese quatrains to poems by Li Tai-Po, in

The work by Zsolt Serei entitled Three Chinese Quatrains, for soprano voice and piano, was composed in 1996-97 to verses by the 7th-century Chinese poet Li Tai-Po. The atmosphere of these songs, linked into a unified cycle by their shared soundsystem and connecting piano sections, is characterized by a fragile equilibrium of fantasy-like, extreme emotional states. Old Bockhampton Tunes on poems by Thomas Hardy for

Ádám Kondor compiled this series from poems written by Thomas Hardy after the age of 70, when the poet was mourning the death of his wife. According to the composer, he was fascinated by the figure of the rather cynically morose old poet... In his decision to have a solo violin accompany the singer he was influenced by references, in biographies of Hardy, to the poet's father's passionate violin-playing. Bockhampton is Hardy's birthplace.

Journey to Ixtlan to a fragment of the poem by Jua

This composition for soprano and chamber ensemble was inspired by the incomparably beautiful poem El viaje definitivo by the Spanish poet Juan Ramón Jiménez, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1956 (the German translation of the poemis included in the score). The piece can be performed by several possible ensembles: 1) soprano and 12 stringed or 12 wind instruments, 2) soprano and 8 stringed or 8 wind instruments - playing parts I-VIII, 3) soprano and 4 stringed or 4 windinstruments - playing parts I-IV. The work was premiered in 1982 in Budapest by the New Music Studio Ensemble, conducted by Albert Simon.

The final journey to the poem by Juan Ramon Jimene

The work (dating from 1992), similarly to the earlier composition entitled Journey to Ixtlan, was composed by Sáry to the poem 'El viaje definitivo' by the famous Spanish poet Juan Ramón Jiménez, this time with the original Spanish text. The performers at the premiere in Budapest in 1993 were Adrienn Csengery, Gergely Ittzés, Sándor Nagy and Gábor Kósa.

This composition written in 2002 has five movements (I: a sort of canon, II: interlude 1, III: (hexameter), IV: interlude 2, V: false copy ). Three of the songs composed to verses by Lajos Parti Nagy examine the structure of the texts. The musical structure in the first song is based on a canon that develops from rotating the lines, in the third song it is based on the rhythms created by splitting words and syllables, in the fifth song it is based on the series of sound effects resulting from completely mixing up the individual letters and sounds. The rigorously structured movements consist of short dramatic episodes, each presenting an unusual life situation (interlude 1,interlude 2). The work, commissioned by Judit Rajk, had its premiere in 2006 in Budapest (Palace of Arts, Festival Theatre).

This collection, similarly to the publication entitled 111 bicinia from the 15th century (EMB 14478), contains longer and shorter two-part excerpts from polyphonic ecclesiastical choral works, for pedagogical and liturgical use. As teaching material, on the one hand it introduces and notes in brief textual definitions the characteristics of each given excerpt: on the other hand, it provides easily usable examples for teaching music history, solfege and counterpoint (practice of intervals, score-reading, dictation, stylistic exercises, etc.) At the same time the movements, which also function as independent units, can be quickly learnt, and may on occasions add colour to themusical palette of the liturgy by introducing material that can be performed even by a children's choir. The volume consists mainly of excerpts taken from Mass movements and Magnificats by Palestrina, Lassus, Gombert, Clemens non Papa and others.

This attractive volume contains easy piano pieces written for music school students by thirteen present-day Hungarian composers. The majority of these miniature, two- or three-line compositions can be played even by beginners, and the technically most difficult works can also be tackled after three or four years’ study. Not only the title-page but the colourful illustrations that accompany the individual pieces also help to arouse the children’s interest and stimulate their imagination ("Teddy’s dreaming of raspberries", "Little chicks", "Chasing", "Tag", etc.).

Four Poems By Anna Akhmatova : for Sopran Solo and Chamber Ensemble

The first performance of György Kurtág's song-cycle written to poems by Anna Akhmatova took place on January 3rd, 2009, in the Carnegie Hall, New York. In this work it is evidence of the exceptionally intimate relationship between the text and the music, that the composer originally imagined the songs as a single vocal solo. The parts for the instrumental ensemble, with their characteristic colours, only later became paired with the vocal solo. The Russian language and the identification with the female figure make the Akhmatova songs an organic sequel or rather a belated successor to the song-cycles Messages of the late R.V. Volume 11 of this popular series contains seven trios for cellos, from various periods of music history: two 18th-century Hungarian dances, D. Gabrielli's Balleto and Sarabande, a set of variations by Joseph Haydn, two famous minuets by L. van Beethoven, an Andante by Dotzauer and one of Schubert's Ländler.
