Double Down - John Heilemann - Bog - Ebury Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Double Down - John Heilemann - Bog - Ebury Publishing - Plusbog.dk

‘What am I supposed to do when he starts spewing his bullshit?’ Barack Obama preparing for his first debate with Mitt Romney In their runaway bestseller Game Change / Race of a Lifetime , Mark Halperin and John Heilemann captured the full drama of Barack Obama’s improbable, dazzling victory over the Clintons, John McCain and Sarah Palin. With the same masterly reporting, unparalleled access, and narrative skill, Double Down picks up the story in the Oval Office, where the president is beset by crises both inherited and unforeseen – facing defiance from his political foes, disenchantment from voters, disdain from the nation’s powerful finance figures and dysfunction within the West Wing. As 2012 looms, leaders of the Republican Party, salivating over Obama’s political fragility, see a chance to wrestle back control of the White House – and the country. So how did the Republicans screw it up? How did Obama survive the onslaught and defy the predictions of a one-term presidency? Double Down follows the gaudy carnival of Republican contenders – ambitious and flawed, famous and infamous, charismatic and cartoonish – as Mitt Romney, the straitlaced, can-do, gaffe-prone multimillionaire from Massachusetts, scraped and scratched his way to the nomination, while Obama is seen storming out of a White House meeting with his high command after accusing them of betrayal, and gradually transforming a tense détente with Bill Clinton into political gold. Double Down takes you into back rooms and closed-door meetings, laying bare the secret history of the 2012 campaign in a panoramic account of an election that was as hard fought as it was lastingly consequential.

The End of Food Allergy - Sloan Barnett - Bog - Ebury Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The revolutionary, research-based programme for preventing, diagnosing and reversing food allergies The problem of food allergy is exploding around us: an estimated 2 million people are living with a diagnosed food allergy in the UK alone. This book offers the first glimpse of hope with a powerful message: you can work with your family and your doctor to eliminate your food allergy forever . Drawing on her trailblazing research at Stanford University and work with thousands of children with allergies, Dr Kari Nadeau reveals that food allergy is not a life sentence because the immune system can be retrained. Food allergies – from mild hives to life-threatening airway constriction – can be disrupted, slowed and stopped. The key is a strategy called immunotherapy (IT), the controlled, gradual reintroduction of an allergen into the body. Fully anglicised for UK readers, The End of Food Allergy makes Dr Nadeau''s life-changing research accessible for parents, carers and professionals alike. Together with co-author New York Times bestselling author Sloan Barnett – herself a mother of two children with food allergies – she walks readers through every aspect of food allergy, offering a clear, supportive plan that readers can work with alongside a health care professional to break free from any kind of food allergy. Includes: · What to do, learn and ask following a food allergy diagnosis – and how to find the right treatment· The science behind immunotherapy and early introduction · How to gradually reintroduce foods not working for you and your family · Advice on what to eat during pregnancy to help your baby avoid developing food allergies· How to cope with the emotional toll of living with food allergy and eliminate all fears Clear, comprehensive and reassuring, The End of Food Allergy offers a life-changing, research-based programme to take the fear out of food and end food allergies in children and adults alike.

Sisters of the East End - Helen Batten - Bog - Ebury Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Heart-warming tales of nursing and midwifery from the Sisters who worked with Jennifer Worth. ‘A second’s silence and then an almighty scream. It was the most moving thing I had ever seen … A baby, a real live baby, another human life had entered the world. It didn’t seem possible and yet I had witnessed it with my very own eyes.’ Born into a happy working-class North London family in the mid-twentieth century, Katie is determined to ‘do something’ with her life. Working in the impoverished East End in the 1950s, she meets the Sisters of St John the Divine – a community of nuns dedicated to nursing and midwifery. The Sisters have been present at births, cared for the sick and laid out the dead of the East Enders for a hundred years, and Katie soon joins them to start her journey to becoming Sister Catherine Mary. As a nurse and midwife, Katie learns to deal with everything from strokes to breech births. Tragedy is never far away, but there are also moments of pure joy as lives are saved and the Poplar residents rally round. As a young novice Katie rallies against the vow of obedience, yet over the years learns much about the nature of dedication and love.Full of desperate hardship, humour and compassion, Katie’s story brings to life the unique world of these nursing Sisters in London’s East End. Sister Catherine Mary’s story was written by Helen Batten after in-depth interviews with today’s Sisters of the Community of St John the Divine. The Community of St John the Divine was founded in 1848 in a bid to make nursing a respectable profession. Early Sisters worked in the Crimea with Florence Nightingale and were instrumental in developing recognised training and qualifications for nurses and midwives. In the early 20th century they were working in areas such as Poplar and Deptford becoming a treasured part of the community. Today the Sisterhood is based in Birmingham and their website is www.csjd.org.uk. Helen Batten studied history at Cambridge and then journalism at Cardiff University. She went on to become a producer and director at the BBC and now works as a writer and a psychotherapist. She lives in West London with her three daughters.

The first proven plan to reverse Alzheimer’s Disease. In The End of Alzheimer’s Dr Dale Bredesen offers real hope to anyone looking to prevent and even reverse Alzheimer’s Disease and the cognitive decline of dementia. Revealing that AD is not one condition but in fact three, he outlines 36 metabolic factors, including micronutrients, hormone levels and sleep, which together can trigger downsizing in the brain. Dr Bredesen then outlines a proven, step-by-step protocol to rebalance these factors, which patients can follow with the help of a healthcare professional (note: blood tests are required in order to tailor individual plans). There are also general lifestyle and dietary changes all readers can adopt to improve cognitive health. - Rewrites the science of Alzheimer’s Disease - Proven step-by-step advice to follow with your doctor - Offers real hope to patients, carers and health professionals - The first major breakthrough to stop Alzheimer’s in its tracks Survival rates in many life-threatening conditions, such as cancer, have been steadily improving for years. But until now nobody had ever survived Alzheimer''s Disease. The results, however, of Dr Bredesen’s protocol are impressive: of the first ten patients on the protocol, nine displayed significant improvement within three to six months; since then the protocol has yielded similar results with hundreds more. Dr Bredesen is also focusing on training UK healthcare professionals in his protocol with a further 200 professionals set to receive training this coming spring.
