In their works, Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber address questions about the structure of cities and the links between urban and social boundaries. Their photographs reveal a particular interest in areas and neighbourhoods that are marginalised or carry a certain stigma in the eyes of society. Instead of focusing on individual images, Stuke and Sieber prefer to create series and sequences, layering, mixing, and connecting elements to create wide-ranging associations. Their most recent work links the French capital with the Ruhr and its imagined centre, the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, which is often referred to as the ''Eiffel Tower of the Ruhr.'' However, neither the Eiffel Tower nor the Zollverein complex feature in the photos. Rather, Stuke and Sieber’s experimental work juxtaposes snapshots taken along the périphérique ring road in Paris and photos of places associated with the Ruhr. The locations are seemingly chosen at random in this system, but it is precisely their haphazard, fragmentary arrangement that highlights unexpected parallels and ingenious connections between places, actions, events, and individuals that are separated from each other in space and time. Freedom, adventure, romance; a spellbound audience, bright-eyed children, rolling drums, a brass band playing lively music; intrepid acrobats in colourful costumes and garishly made-up clowns. The same old stereotypes about the world of the circus are trotted out on many occasions. Over a period spanning more than 15 years, the photographer Oliver Stegmann visited different circuses to take photos of what happens behind the curtains. His muted images attempt to break the usual stereotypes. Again and again, the photographer captured protagonists in moments of unawareness, showing scenes that the audience would normally never get to see from the edge of the ring. Above all, Stegmann is interested in the atmosphere of tense expectation and utmost concentration when the artists are about to perform their hair-raising acts. Using neither colour nor flash, he creates an enigmatic atmosphere reminiscent of expressionist films. For his circus series, Stegmann develops a kind of imagery that has rarely been applied to the small world of the circus as consistently and confidently as in this case. In terms of subject-matter, design, and production, Circus Noir takes a different approach to this genre by adding an entirely unromantic perspective that focuses on the true essence of what it means to work in a circus. Renowned Japanese-Swiss artist Leiko Ikemura’s multifaceted oeuvre comprises paintings, watercolours, drawings, as well as terra-cotta and bronze sculptures. She has created a diverse cultural universe that acts as an intermediary between Western and Asian culture. Ikemura is known, above all, for her sculptural works. Her hybrid creatures, seemingly archaic, oscillate between human, animal and plant like shapes. Sometimes childlike or feminine in appearance, the figures and their peculiar physiognomy evoke moments of calm reflection and deep emotion; at times they gesture towards vulnerability and pain, at others they symbolise bliss and dreaminess. This title introduces Ikemura’s most recent installation: six sculptures displayed in the open air at Valencia’s City of Arts and Sciences, an ensemble of buildings and parkland designed by Santiago Calatrava. Nasan Tur (*1974) explores the political and social conditions of our time. The Black Mountain College (BMC) in North Carolina was the leading institution for interdisciplinary arts education in the late 1940s. The curriculum included not only the fine arts, architecture and theatre, but also economics, physics and history. Many of America’s foremost artists, poets and designers of the time, as well as numerous emigrants from Germany who came to the Black Mountain College from the Bauhaus after it was closed by the Nazis, were among the teaching staff. The goal of the BMC was to establish a democratic and – in accordance with John Dewey’s principles of progressive education – experience-based, interdisciplinary teaching institute. This publication is the first to examine the BMC’s educational model, its philosophical approaches and John Dewey’s philosophy of art, with the aim of comprehensively understanding and reviving the BMC’s legacy in order to renew it in a participatory sense. A major focus of this volume is the art project PERFORMING the Black Mountain ARCHIVE by Arnold Dreyblatt, in which students from European art academies were invited to translate an archive on the Black Mountain College created by Dreyblatt into the present time through performative interaction. Benjamin Rubloff'' s paintings in this book are all based on fragments of found graffiti. For many years, the artist photographed tags as he walked around the city, mainly because he was interested in their painterly qualities: the speed of a gesture, the way they sit on a wall, their random drips and splashes. As an experiment, he began copying these marks into oil paintings, altering the scale and framing, but otherwise aiming for an exact transcription of the original tag. His intention was to create abstract paintings that would not bear the qualities of his own hand. Instead, they would be records of the traces of others. When he retraced his steps — sometimes years later — to find the original tags, Rubloff often found them gone. Sometimes the sites themselves had been radically altered. He began to write about these places in conjunction with the paintings, exploring the intersection of their histories with his own. As a result, each painting in the book is accompanied by a text and a photograph of the site, intended to provide an anchor back to the city itself.

Romantic landscape painting and the tradition of recounting fairy tales have their roots in the 19th century. The painter Philipp Fröhlich transposes them to the present. In his works Hansel and Gretel are dressed like people of the 21st century, and his scenes of nature, which are rendered in a style that approaches photorealism, provide a sharp contrast to the anti-modernism that is usually associated with fairy tales. While we were able to identify with the heroes from the picture books of our childhood, the figures in Fröhlich’s art seem eerily removed from us. The canvases are huge and give the impression to viewers that they have become part of the pictures themselves. Fröhlich studied stage design in Düsseldorf until 2002, and gradually switched from theatre work to painting. But his artistic approach is still influenced by his initial training. Beginning with notes and preparatory studies, Fröhlich develops models, some of which are elaborately designed, to try out the composition of the future picture. The resulting stage-like, almost cinematic quality of his paintings leads to an intriguing mixture of precise, cool realism and soft painterly effects – as if we were gazing into a distorting mirror between reality and fantasy. The Anahuacalli Museum in Mexico City, a pyramid-shaped structure of volcanic stone, was intended to be the final mansion of Diego Rivera and his wife, Frida Kahlo. Today, it houses Rivera’s vast collection of pre-Columbian art. Unlike typical museums, the building’s galleries resemble religious or ceremonial chambers, and the corridors are dramatic and cavernous. In 2022, artist Robert Janitz (b. 1962 in Alsfeld, Germany), who had recently moved to Mexico City from New York, was invited to exhibit his work at Anahuacalli. This catalogue documents this extraordinary dialogue between pre-Hispanic and contemporary aesthetics. As an outsider, Janitz was free to respond to what he found compelling at Anahuacalli: the colours, the textures, the visionary architecture. Throughout the museum’s three floors, Janitz installed large-scale paintings on the walls, even the ceiling and floor, to amplify and distort Rivera’s almost ubiquitous decorative program. His paintings of tubular structures, halfway between hieroglyphs and shapes, were spotlit against the heavy, dark stone walls, giving them a jewel-like luminosity and creating an almost metaphysical and spiritual experience. Conceptually and chromatically, Anahuacalli seemed the perfect home for Janitz’s extravagantly coloured silhouettes. Text in English and Spanish.

Jörg Rubbert’s series of photos about Paris, taken over a period of 30 years between 1988 and 2019, views the city and its people from different perspectives. His images feature bourgeois neighbourhoods and majestic public squares as well as run-down areas and famous red-light districts. Rubbert focuses both on the city’s unique atmosphere and on its residents. He consistently makes use of analogue photography without digital add-ons, exclusively relying on natural light. With their dense atmosphere, blurred focus, high contrasts, and in some cases grainy appearance, Rubbert’s photos are “imperfect” in the best sense of the word, taking on an almost painterly quality. His images approach their subject from two different angles. They show Paris, with its striking architecture and picturesque atmosphere, through the lens of accentuated nostalgia, yet they also shine a light on people’s lives and the city’s current social condition. In a demonstration that the streets still form the real stage of the “theatre of life,” they put a spotlight on the seemingly trivial stories of everyday life. Text in English, German and French.

Düsseldorf-based sculptor Carol Pilars de Pilar (b. 1961) addresses fundamental questions of how we live in our world, and how we see ourselves and others. Her work exudes a humanistic sympathy for her subjects and their relationship to the world. This book, which documents her series entitled Alltag/Everyday Life and Passages , combines sculptures, texts, and images to create a multifaceted large-scale art installation. Mounted on concrete plinths and slender steel supports, the artist has created clay figurines that are representative of society in all its breadth and diversity. In interviews that address the key issues our society faces today, she spoke to six people, recording and transcribing their answers. In conjunction with the collages and sculptures, they contribute to the associative web of meanings her work evokes. Text in English and German.

In recent years, the images shot by the Cologne-based architectural photographers Hugo (1879-1938) and Karl Hugo Schmölz (1917-1986) have been winning wide acclaim and are receiving more and more attention. After completing his photography training and working in various positions, Hugo Schmölz set himself up as an architectural photographer in Cologne in 1911. Later, his son Karl Hugo took over the company. While the work of the two photographers fell into oblivion over the years, it is being rediscovered today and reveals its breathtaking aesthetic originality and technical perfection. Due to the development of a special, additional exposure technique, Schmölz was able to capture dark interiors in astounding detail even at the beginning of the century and to create dazzlingly elegant pictures which have lost none of their expressive power. For the first time ever, the book presents a series of photos, taken mostly in the Rhineland and the Ruhr district between 1935 and 1957, together with pictures showing movie theatres which were brand new at the time. Most of these cinema auditoriums have since been destroyed, but the light in the photos gives them a three-dimensionality that evokes a striking sculptural effect. They are certainly not imbued with nostalgia, on the contrary, they appear to be strangely lost in time and, owing to their extremely delicate gray nuances, seem almost hyperreal.
