British Rail Departmental Locomotives 1948-68 - Shirley Smith - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

This significant new book provides a single reference work to all the departmental locomotives - steam, diesel, electric and battery - both standard and narrow gauge operated by BR from 1948 to the end of steam in 1968.Although the railways employed the vast bulk of their locomotive stock on commercial passenger and freight traffic, many also employed a number for departmental duties. These may have been narrow gauge, for example, for use in the major workshops such as Crewe and Horwich or withdrawn ex-main-line locomotives that eked out their final day or months in a secondary duty at a locomotive shed. At Nationalisation in 1948 BR inherited a number of these departmental locomotives from the ''Big Four'' companies and, over the next 20 years, a number of further steam and other locomotives were transferred to departmental duties, including a significant number used as stationary boilers. The transfer of locomotives from capital to departmental stock did not cease with the end of steam and examples of diesel and electric locomotives being renumbered into the departmental series continued effectively until the end of BR in the early 1990s. The book includes information about the locations at which the locomotives worked and provides full details of each individual locomotive''s record in departmental service. The book is illustrated throughout with Ordnance Survey maps and photographs of the locomotives and locations.

British Railways Steam Locomotives 1948-68 - Hugh Longworth - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

When it was originally published, Hugh Longworth''s definitive record of every steam locomotive operated by British Railways from nationalisation until the end of steam traction on the network in 1968 was very much welcomed as it provided for the first time in one place a detailed and accurate source of reference on this important subject. With the book having been out of print for some time, a new and revised edition was overdue. However, the extent of the revisions, which included the books'' many photographs being given more space on the page and the use of enlarged and enhanced locomotive drawings, greatly increased the size of the work. Rather than attempt to cut or dilute the content, it was decided that instead of publishing one unwieldy and expensive book, a more realistic approach was to present the work in two volumes of roughly similar size. This is the first of these and focuses on the Great Western and LNER locomotives which became part of BR stock in 1948. The second book, due in 2025, will cover Southern and LMS locos and the Standard classes introduced by BR.The entry for each class provides essential information including the size of cylinders and driving wheels, boiler pressure, weight, the type of valve gear used, the year the type was introduced and its tractive effort. For each locomotive in a class, its place of construction and the date, withdrawal and scrapping dates are given as are details of any renumberings that may have occurred during the BR era.Heavily illustrated throughout, this book and its companion volume will be of great value to all interested in the steam era on British Railways. All classes that were on BR''s books in the years post 1948 are covered, and whilst the overwhelming majority of the locos featured are standard gauge, the few narrow gauge locomotives operated by BR are also included.

The Acquired Wagons of British Railways Volume 5 - David Larkin - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The Acquired Wagons of British Railways Volume 5 - David Larkin - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

British Railways was created in 1948 when the Great Western, the London, Midland & Scottish, the London & North Eastern and the Southern were taken into public ownership. BR inherited all their locomotives, passenger and goods rolling stock. Whilst much has been published on BR locomotives and passenger stock, accurate and detailed coverage of the large inventory of vehicles used to convey the huge volumes of goods traffic carried by the railways at that time, is less readily available. This series sets out to provide that information. Written by David Larkin, one of the acknowledged experts on British railway wagons, each volume is heavily illustrated throughout.Starting with an overview of the categories of vehicles covered, this fifth volume explores the huge fleet of open general merchandise wagons, of various sizes, acquired from the ''Big Four''. The wagons are generally dealt with in relation to the companies that built them. The types of wagons covered in this volume includes three-plank mostly dropside opens and the more common general merchandise five-plank versions. It also deals with all the wagons which were produced with shock absorbing equipment from the 1930s onwards, low sided 20-ton capacity all-steel aggregate wagons and PW open wagons used for ballast and general loads. This series is an essential work of reference for all those interested in BR''s huge wagon fleet and a valuable reference tool for railway modellers.

British Rail Architecture - David Lawrence - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

With many now seeing the return of British Rail as a solution to the manifest problems on Britain''s railways in the 21st century, the work of BR is being re-evaluated on various levels. This book focuses on one aspect of this, BR''s architectural legacy showing how it pursued innovation and experiment in this field. British Rail Architecture demonstrates how twentieth century British railway stations were being brought into the mainstream of modern architecture. It explores not just the buildings and their designers but styles, materials, furniture, colours, artworks and unexpected links to distant places that inspired these changing design idioms. The book''s structure is loosely chronological, accounting for the time architecture takes to evolve from a sketch to a finished building. It begins with the ambitious ideas conceived during the 1930s with inspiration from mainland Europe and then examines post Second World War reconstruction as a precursor to the considerable innovation of the 1950s and 1960s. The narrative then recounts the new design ideas brought to the railway environment during the 1970s and the considerable investments in comprehensive reconstruction and new station projects between in the 1980s and 90s. The book''s author, David Lawrence, is a professional in this field, his 2016 title, British Rail Designed 1948 - 1997 has received justifiable acclaim and has already been reprinted.

The Acquired Wagons of British Railways Volume 7 - David Larkin - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

British Railways was created in 1948 when the Great Western, the London, Midland & Scottish, the London & North Eastern and the Southern were taken into public ownership. It inherited all their locomotives, passenger and goods rolling stock. Whilst much has been published on BR locomotives and passenger stock, accurate and detailed coverage of the large inventory of vehicles used to convey the huge volumes of goods traffic carried by the railways at that time, is less readily available. This new series, of which this will be the penultimate volume, sets out to provide that information. This book deals mostly with two types of vehicles inherited by BR, the relatively small number of Ballast Plough Brake Vans and a huge fleet of hopper wagons of all types and capacities. Included in this category are hoppers of both wooden and steel construction which were used for a range of traffic flows including coke, coal and loco coal, iron ore and ballast. These vehicles included both those which had been part of the inventories of the companies nationalised in 1948 and those that came from private businesses. This volume, as with the others in the series is illustrated throughout with around 200 black and white photographs. The series is essential reading for those interested in this aspect of British railway history and an invaluable reference source for those engaged in modelling the post 1940s era.

British Railways First Generation DMUs - Hugh (author) Longworth - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

British Railways First Generation DMUs - Hugh (author) Longworth - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

First widely introduced from the early 1950s onwards, the diesel multiple-unit represented an attempt to produce a vehicle that would replace steam traction on the country''s branch lines and secondary routes at a time when the railway industry was in desperate need of a cheaper alternative to steam in order to improve the finances of these increasingly unremunerative lines. Over 4,000 vehicles were ordered from both BR works and private manufacturers as part of the BR modernisation plan of 1955.Following refurbishment from the early 1970s onwards, many first generation DMUs were to survive in service until the late 1980s and early 1990s. Although most were scrapped after withdrawal, a significant number of these vehicles have been preserved on the nation''s heritage railways. This updated and expanded edition of Hugh Longworth''s classic book on the subject records the great variety of DMU types constructed as part of the programme. Each is covered in detail with information about construction, technical specifications, entry into service, formations, allocations, withdrawal and final fate. This new edition makes full use of colour throughout with many additional photos included. The diagrams have been redrawn and a new section showing the unit formations has been added.Comprehensive in its coverage, this book will be sought after by all those modellers, preservationists and historians seeking a detailed reference work on the history of first generation DMUs.

abc British Railways Locomotives Combined Volume Summer 1959 - - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

A popular feature of our publishing programme for a number of years has been our facsimile reprints of selected titles from the famous Ian Allan Publishing abc series that first appeared in the 1940s. These modestly priced reprints are welcomed by both the enthusiasts who may have used them when they first came out and also by those not around at the time they were first published. They provide wonderful, nostalgic snapshots of a railway scene which has long since disappeared. The volume selected for reissue this Spring is abc British Railways Locomotives Combined Volume Summer 1959. This is in effect two books in one, abc British Railways Locomotives and the Locoshed Book. The abc lists all the locomotives which were in service at that time and the Locoshed book shows where those engines were allocated at the time the listings were compiled. The year covered in this volume is a particularly interesting one. By now, many of the new diesel classes conceived as a consequence of the BR modernisation plan of 1955, were coming into service though the steam locomotive was still supreme across most of the network, and indeed, new BR Standard steam locomotives were still under construction. As with all of these facsimile reprints, this volume provides a wonderful, nostalgic snapshot of a railway scene which has long since disappeared and will be enjoyed by enthusiasts of both steam and modern traction.

British Railway DMUs in Colour for the Modeller and Historian - Gavin Morrison - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

British Railway DMUs in Colour for the Modeller and Historian - Gavin Morrison - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Designed specifically for modellers of the modern scene, this new book provides a comprehensive reference to all the livieries that have come and gone on the network since the wholesale privatisation of the mid 1990s.It is now more than 70 years since the first DMUs made their first appearance on the British railway system and more than 50 years since DMUs were introduced onto the BR network in large numbers. From the late 1950s onwards several thousand DMU vehicles were brought into service as replacement for steam services over branches and secondary routes and from the mid-1980s onwards this first generation of DMU was gradually replaced by a second-generation of DMU although the final elimination of the first-generation units did not occur until the first years of the 21st century. On the privatised railway of the 21st century, virtually all non-electrified passenger services are now operated by DMUs of one design or another and, on the preserved railways, many examples of the first generation of stock continue to earn their living. Although initially ill-favoured, as the years passed, so the humble DMU has attracted an ever-growing army of enthusiast fans and this is reflected in the number of web-sites devoted to the subject, to the increasing number of models that are emerging - a reflection of the fact that virtually no model railway covering the BR scene post 1955 can avoid operating DMUs. Fully illustrated throughout, this is the perfect volume for all serious modellers!

British Railways Station Totems: The Complete Guide - Dave Brennand - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

British Railways Station Totems: The Complete Guide - Dave Brennand - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

This is a second and completely revised edition of a book first published in 2002 which has been long out of print and is now much sought after. There has always been something special about those classic British Railways totem station signs that no other item of railway memorabilia possesses. They recall a railway system that, for better or worse, was far removed from that of today, when life was simpler and less formulaic, when stations were welcoming locations rather than barrier-laden fortresses, and signage was straightforward but still informative. Totems were deceptively simple in terms of their design and typography but clear, easy to recognise and colour coded for the various BR regions. They were found on stations across the network from Penzance to Wick and from Fishguard to Cromer. They told you what you needed to know and no more, they were standardised throughout the railway system, and have rightly earned their place in the ranks of collectible railwayana, with some examples reaching five-figure sums at auctions. This volume is as close as it is likely to get to a definitive book on all aspects of BR totems. Across its 350 pages are to be found 2,214 images - including 2,250 totems - 43 maps and a wealth of relevant statistics. For collectors of railwayana, students of design and for all those with an interest in railway history, this book will be both a visual delight and a reference source to be referred to again and again.
