The BR Blue period continues to grow in popularity, a mark of this being that is now the fifth volume in what is a popular series. In the compilation of any book there is always a decision to be made between portraying the regular or unusual. Including occasions when a locomotive and perhaps two coaches might have replaced a DMU or a rake of DMU''s replaced a locomotive hauled train!The coverage is almost country wide although the majority feature in area where locomotive and DMU operation was prominent.

Hugh Longworth is well known for his detailed research and encyclopaedic data books on BR locomotive stock. This significant new book provides a single reference work to all the departmental locomotives - steam, diesel, electric and battery - both standard and narrow gauge operated by BR from 1948 to the end of steam in 1968.Although the railways employed the vast bulk of their locomotive stock on commercial passenger and freight traffic, many also employed a number for departmental duties. These may have been narrow gauge, for example, for use in the major workshops such as Crewe and Horwich or withdrawn ex-main-line locomotives that eked out their final day or months in a secondary duty at a locomotive shed. The book includes information about the locations at which the locomotives worked and provides full details of each individual locomotive''s record in departmental service. When it was originally published, Hugh Longworth''s definitive record of every steam locomotive operated by British Railways from nationalisation until the end of steam traction on the network in 1968 was very much welcomed as it provided for the first time in one place a detailed and accurate source of reference on this important subject.With the book having been out of print for some time, a new and revised edition was overdue. However, the extent of the revisions, which included the books'' many photographs being given more space on the page and the use of enlarged and enhanced locomotive drawings, greatly increased the size of the work. British Railways was created in 1948. Whilst much has been published on BR locomotives and passenger stock, accurate and detailed coverage of the large inventory of vehicles used to convey the huge volumes of goods traffic carried by the railways at that time, is less readily available. This new series sets out to provide that information. This volume focuses on the coal wagons built to the Railway Clearing House specification dating from 1923. The wagons built under this were originally rated at 12 ton capacity through this was uprated to 13 tons at the outbreak of the Second World War. In this volume the vehicles built for the ''Big Four'' companies are covered in detail as are those delivered to Private Owners with their numerous complex door variations, which also came into the inventory of the newly formed BR. Some of those former Private Owner wagons were specifically designed to carry coke from the outset. British Railways treated these acquisitions, together with dual-purpose coal/coke wagons and others converted after the war to carry coke only, as a special category of vehicle. These variations are examined in detail in this latest addition to this series.

The BR diesel locomotive types, that under the TOPs renumbering scheme became Classes 44s, 45s, and 46s, are best known by their nickname of ''Peaks''. This is derived from the first ten locomotives being given the names of British mountains. These machines originated under the Modernisation Plan of 1955 as BR''s Type 4 design. The Class 45s and Class 46s had slightly more powerful engines compared to the Class 44s, with the Class 46s having Brush rather than Crompton Parkinson Ltd electrical equipment.The Class 45s became the main motive power on the Midland main line for many years, while the Class 46s were used heavily on cross country services between the North East and South West. The Class 44s were at first employed on the West Coast main line but were latterly were relegated to freight duties mostly being based at Toton depot in Nottinghamshire.This new study covers the three types from their design and inception through to withdrawal and preservation. They provide wonderful, nostalgic snapshots of a railway scene which has long since disappeared. The next reissue in the series - British Rail Locomotives and Other Motive Power: Combined Volume 1967. Two years before in 1965, there had been 3,000 steam locos on BR''s books. But such was the remorseless march of diesel and electric traction, by the end of 1967, this had shrunk to a mere 361; 307 of LMS origin, 2 ex LNER locos and only 52 out of the 999 BR Standard locos built. This is also the first of our abc reprints which uses the term ''British Rail'' in its title, that having been introduced in 1965. The focus of the 1967 abc Combined is therefore firmly on diesel and electric motive power with new locos being added all the time and almost all of the early Modernisation Plan types still in service. For generations of enthusiasts, these were the locos they grew up with and spotted so this volume will be one many can relate to more strongly than the rapidly fading age of steam.

By now, many of the new diesel classes conceived as a consequence of the BR modernisation plan of 1955, were coming into service though the steam locomotive was still supreme across most of the network, and indeed, new BR Standard steam locomotives were still under construction. As with all of these facsimile reprints, this volume provides a wonderful, nostalgic snapshot of a railway scene which has long since disappeared and will be enjoyed by enthusiasts of both steam and modern traction.

Our reprints of the famous Ian Allan Publishing abc series that ran from the 1940s through to the 1960s are always welcomed, not only by that generation of enthusiasts who used them when they first came out, but also by those who were not around at the time. This was a very interesting period in the development of the BR steam locomotive fleet in the 1950s. There were many venerable pre-grouping classes still around and thousands of locomotives built or designed by the Big Four, but by 1954 all of the British Railways Standard classes were in production, including the unique Class 8 Pacific No 71000 Duke of Gloucester and the first of the 9Fs which entered service that year. The first of renowned artist David Shepherd''s collections of colour slides - An Artist Among the Ashes: A Photographic Record of the Very End of Southern Region Steam - was published in January 2012. To produce the title, Noodle Books was privileged to be able to access the author''s extensive collection of slides taken during the 1960s when he was travelling around Britain recording the final years of main-line steam operation and producing the iconic works of art for which he is renowned. The first volume dealt solely with the end of steam on the Southern but David Shepherd also recorded steam elsewhere and, published in spring 2013, this collection continues with the story ''north of the Thames'' into the industrial Midlands and North-East where steam traction lasted until 1968. As with the earlier volume, the book includes David''s moving comments about the very end of steam on BR. This is not an ordinary type of railway book. The artist''s eye is ever present to capture scenes and colours so often overlooked and revealing details of light, shade, night and day that make the pictures mesmerising and memorable.
