Brian Elias: Three Songs (Christina Rossetti) for Alto and Harp

These three poems were written by Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) several years apart, yet they seem to express similar emotions and concerns. The first was written in 1853 when she was twenty-three, the second when she was in her late thirties and the third, written towards the end of her life may be the last poem she ever wrote.These Three Songs were completed in February 2003, and last a total of approximately fifteen minutes.

Musgrave: A Song For Christmas

A Song For Christmas was written in 1958. It is a setting of a 15th century Scottish poem, sometimes attributed to William Dunbar, scored for Soprano or Tenor solo with Piano accompaniment. It was commissioned by BBC Scotland, and is one of the few pieces to date from the composer's brief phase of total serialism, as testified to by the angular melody and declamatory texture. Thea Musgrave (b. 1928) is a Scottish-American composer. Over a career spanning more than 60 years, she has established herself as one of the leading contemporary composers on both sides of the Atlantic.

Little Tree consists of three short choral settings of poems by E.E.Cummings, with a total duration of around 6 minutes. The first song Little tree is in three voices(SSA); the next movement I carry your heart with me progresses into four voices; the final song now is a ship opens briefly with two solo voices, but ends in 6 vocal parts. Accompanying all three pieces is a simple marimba part which acts as a continuo instrument. In the opening movement, it simply doubles the lowest vocal part; in the later pieces, it provides a simple basis for the choral harmony. Judith Weir's wonderful vocal score for SSA and Marimba accompaniment. Ideal for children and female voiced choirs.

Judith Weir 's Good Morning, Midnight was commissioned by Wigmore Hall and was first performed on 6th June 2015 at the Wigmore Hall in London. The work is arranged for Mezzo-Soprano and Chamber Ensemble, and lasts around 20 minutes. This is the vocal score, with a Piano reduction. Good Morning, Midnight  takes its name from a poem by Emily Dickinson, whose poetry bookends this work, a setting of five different verses in total. The words all centre around the theme of night, solitude, quiet and the passage of time, the beauty of which is matched by Weir 's fantastic music. Taking the words as her inspiration, Weir  creates a satisfying work that's full of emotion and a sheer joy to listen to. At its world premiere, it was performed by Sarah Connolly (Mezzo-Soprano) and the Aurora Orchestra, conducted by Nicolas Collon.

Giovanni Boni: Sonata In G Major For Oboe and Piano (Arr. Rothwell)

Giovanni Boni is a little known Italian composer from – presumably – the first half of the 18th century. Multiple records of composers with identical or similar names from that period can be found, who could indeed have been one and the same person, and the Giovanni Boni at hand could have been any or none of them! Evelyn Rothwell edited and arranged four pieces from the Walsh edition of the “Solos for a German Flute, Hoboy or Violin compos’d by Sigr. Giovanni Boni” into the Oboe Sonata In G for Oboe with Piano accompaniment. This hidden gem of Italian Baroque music should not be dismissed, as the charmingly melodic sonata is a particular delight for musicians and audiences alike. The four movements ( Preludio – Largo , Allegro , Alla Siciliana , Allegro ) can be played separately or together, their total performance time is approximately 8:30 minutes. Boni ’s Sonata In G is well within the capabilities of the average student or amateur Oboe player, and a unique addition to the solo player’s repertoire!

John Luther Adams: Three High Places – For Solo Cello

Gordon Wright was the friend of a lifetime. For thirty years Gordon and I shared our two greatest passions: music and Alaska. Gordon was my musical collaborator, my next-door neighbor, my fellow environmentalist and my camping buddy. These miniatures are musical sketches of three moments and places in our friendship. Like Alaska, Gordon was larger than life. He always lived his own way. And he died just as he would have wanted. We found him lying on the deck of his cabin in the Chugach Mountains, curled up against his favorite birch tree, looking across the waters of Turnagain Arm toward the Resurrection Valley and the tiny settlement of Hope. - John Luther Adams This music contains no normal stopped tones. All the sounds are produced as natural harmonics or on open strings. There are no harmonics higher than the sixth. So these sounds should be clear and resonant. Even so, balancing the harmonics with the open strings requires careful attention. The durations of the individual pieces are given at the end of each. The total duration of the set is about ten minutes.
