Requiem in C major : First edition - C major

Johann Adolf Hasse, Kapellmeister at the Saxon-Polish court in Dresden, composed the Requiem in C for the ceremonial exequies of the deceased Elector Frederic August II in November 1763 in the Catholic Hofkirche in Dresden. Luigi Cherubini: Requiem in c : c-Moll

Cherubini’s Requiem in C minor for mixed choir [without vocal soloists] and orchestra, which is presented here in a critical new edition, is among the most significant contributions to this genre in the 19th century. It was composed in Paris in 1816 and within a short time it became well known. Musicians such as Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms held it in high esteem because of the work’s superior compositional construction, orchestration, mastery of form and the balance in proportion between text and music.

Johann Adolf Hasse: Requiem in C

As a composer Johann Adolf Hasse [1699 1783] was the uncontested idol of the late baroque era. Although today he is known primarily as an opera composer, he left behind numerous excellent sacred works. At last, the sacred music he composed for the court of Dresden is being made accessible in recorded form. As in the case of the CD containing Hasse’s Requiem in E flat major and Miserere in D minor [Carus 83.175], winner of several prestigious awards, once again the Dresdener Kammerchor and the Dresdner Barockorchester, under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann have devoted the present CD to a recording of Hasse’s Requiem in C major and the Miserere in C minor: this might alsobe a candidate for a some awards.

Beethoven: Messe in C-Dur

The Kammerchor Stuttgart, under the direction of Frieder Bernius is one of the finest choirs worldwide. Their many prizewinning recordings have set a standard. Now Frieder Bernius presents Beethoven's "Missa in C major" [op. 86]. With its tonal language of subjective avowal, the first of Beethoven's two masses opens up new worlds of expression which are expressly modern and point towards the future. Not to be considered a preliminary work to the Missa solemnis, it is an entirely independent work which set standards for the further development of settings of the Mass in the 19th century. The world premiere recording of Luigi Cherubini's "Sciant gentes" [1829] rounds out this CD.

The American musicologist and internationally acclaimed concert pianist, Robert D. Levin has reconstructed and completed the Mass, which occupies an outstanding position among Mozart’s church music. In honor of Mozart’s 250th birthday Carus-Verlag Stuttgart is publishing this important reconstruction and thus this central work of church music will now be available in a form which is liturgically complete. Miserere In C Minor

It was not only the musicians of the 16th and 17th centuries who – for liturgical reasons – regularly presented settings of the penitential psalm 50 (51). Even in later times, composers occasionally cultivated this tradition, for example, the "Bückeburger" Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach with his 12-movement composition dated around 1770 which was only discovered in 1975. Bach’s Miserere, held almost exclusively in flat keys, consists of a balanced alternation of choral and solo sections. One common stylistic feature of all the sections is, in particular, the lavishly used "empfindsam" suspensions and small ornamental notes. As an example of the pre-Classical era, thecomposition is well suited for programmes featuring fast and penance compositions from several epochs.
