The Double V Campaign - Lea Lyon - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

The Double V Campaign - Lea Lyon - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

The rousing story of the Double V Campaign, started during World War II to encourage Black Americans to fight for freedom overseas and at home. When the United States entered World War II, young African Americans across the country faced a difficult dilemma. Why should they risk their lives fighting for freedoms in other nations that they did not have at home? The solution: fight two wars at once—for freedom abroad and freedom for Black people in America. A Double Victory! In The Double V Campaign, Lea Lyon details this fascinating, little-known part of American history. A young journalist, civil service employee, and aircraft plant cafeteria worker named James G. Thompson came up with the simple yet powerful Double V slogan to represent the fight for victory against the enemy abroad and the fight for victory against racial discrimination at home. Lyon shows how the popular Black-owned newspaper the Pittsburgh Courier, along with other Black newspapers, activists, the NAACP, and others, used the Double V Campaign to push for changes in the segregation and discriminatory practices in the military and defense industry, and how the campaign influenced and enhanced the Civil Rights Movement to come. The Double V Campaign gave voice to African American communities throughout the war and inspired hundreds of thousands to continue speaking up against discrimination in the years that followed. It is a powerful story of fighting for what is right, of fighting for change and equality even when those in positions of power are telling you to stop, and the strength of a united voice to effect change.

Your End of Life Matters - Anne Finkelman Ziff - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

Your End of Life Matters - Anne Finkelman Ziff - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

Your End of Life Matters is offered at a time when people are starting to talk more about end-of-life matters. Based on the author’s own experiences and those of others she’s worked with, the book conveys the value of talking about last wishes long before the end is imminent. With the primary emphasis on how to create a successful end-of-life communication of your own, this book weaves stories, text, writing prompts, humor, and exercises into 12 chapters that include answers to key questions including the who? why?, what?, how?, where?, and when? of a potential conversation. She covers Legacy Documents and other issues that might arise when planning for those final days. Ziff has written a “how-to” communication book for readers of all ages, addressing the need, and recommending methods, to do what her parents did, and what she eventually did as well: To communicate, with someone you know you can trust, what the end-of-life matters are that you will want known both before, and when the time (of your death) comes. Ziff has been on both sides of this vital conversation, first as a Listener, and, more recently, as its Initiator, and she advocates the value of both roles. “Let me tell you,” she admits candidly, “the planning ahead is pretty challenging and time-consuming—cataloging my office data, tax and medical information, photos and writings, to say nothing of books, and of clothing I had saved but not used in decades. But the relief—being able to know the talk was accomplished successfully—that’s remarkable! I’m free now to actively get on exploring my bucket list and living my life!”

Means to an End - Tod Lindberg - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

" The International Criminal Court remains a sensitive issue in U.S. foreign policy circles. It was agreed to at the tail end of the Clinton administration, but with serious reservations. In 2002 the Bush administration ceremoniously reversed course and ""unsigned"" the Rome Statute that had established the Court. But recent developments in Washington and elsewhere indicate that the United States may be moving toward de facto acceptance of the Court and active cooperation in its mission. In Means to an End , Lee Feinstein and Tod Lindberg reassess the relationship of the United States and the ICC, as well as American policy toward international justice more broadly. Praise for the hardcover edition of Means to an End ""Books of this sort are all too rare. Two experienced policy intellectuals, one liberal, one conservative, have come together to find common ground on a controversial foreign policy issue.... The book is short, but it goes a long way toward clearing the ideological air."" — Foreign Affairs ""A well-researched and timely contribution to the debate over America''s proper relationship to the International Criminal Court. Rigorous in its arguments and humane in its conclusions, the volume is an indispensable guide for scholars and policymakers alike."" —Madeleine K. Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State ""Two of our nation''s leading authorities on preventing atrocities have joined to make a convincing argument that closer cooperation with the International Criminal Court will help promote human rights and the values on which America was founded."" —Angelina Jolie, co-chair, Jolie-Pitt Foundation "

The End of the American Century - David S. Mason - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

The End of the American Century - David S. Mason - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

This compelling and persuasive book is the first to explore all of the interrelated aspects of America''s decline. Hard-hitting and provocative, yet measured and clearly written, The End of the American Century demonstrates the phases of social, economic, and international decline that mark the end of a period of world dominance that began with World War II. The costs of the war on terror and the Iraq War have exacerbated the already daunting problems of debt, poverty, inequality, and political and social decay. David S. Mason convincingly argues that the United States, like other great powers in the past, is experiencing the dilemma of "imperial overstretch"—bankrupting the home front in pursuit of costly and fruitless foreign ventures. The author shows that elsewhere in the world, the United States is no longer admired as a model for democracy and economic development; indeed, it is often feared or resented. He compares the United States and its accomplishments with other industrialized democracies and potential rivals. The European Union is more stable in economic and social terms, and countries like India and China are more economically dynamic. These and other nations will soon eclipse the United States, signaling a fundamental transformation of the global scene. This transition will require huge adjustments for American citizens and political leaders alike. But in the end, Americans—and the world—will be better off with a less profligate, more interdependent United States. More information is available on the author''s website.

Hollywood and the End of the Cold War - Bryn Upton - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

Hollywood and the End of the Cold War - Bryn Upton - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

From the late 1940s until the early 1990s, the Cold War was perhaps the most critical and defining aspect of American culture, influencing television, music, and movies, among other forms of popular entertainment. Films in particular were at the center of the battle for the hearts and minds of the American public. Throughout this period, the Cold War influenced what movies got produced, how such movies were made, and how audiences understood the films they watched. In the post–Cold War era, some genres of film suffered from the shift in our national narratives, while others were quickly reimagined for an audience with different political and social fears. In Hollywood and the End of the Cold War: Signs of Cinematic Change, Bryn Upton compares films from the late Cold War era with movies of similar themes from the post–Cold War era. In this volume, Upton pays particular attention to shifts in narrative that reflect changes in American culture, attitudes, and ideas. In exploring how the absence of the Cold War has changed the way we understand and interpret film, this volume seeks to answer several key questions such as: Has the end of the Cold War altered how we tell our stories? Has it changed how we perceive ourselves? In what ways has our popular culture been affected by the absence of this once dominant presence? With its focus on themes that are central to the concerns of many historians—including civil religion, social fracture, and the culture wars—Hollywood and the End of the Cold War will serve as a useful tool for those seeking to integrate film into the classroom, as well as for film scholars exploring representations of sociopolitical change on screen.

The End of Corruption and Impunity - Stuart S. Yeh - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

The End of Corruption and Impunity - Stuart S. Yeh - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

The End of Corruption and Impunity advances a novel idea: it is feasible to limit the corruption that plagues the efforts of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and activists working to end poverty and advance human rights in developing regions of the world. Using a mixed methods approach, this book analyzes the problem of corruption and specific factors contributing to corruption, offering a direct, effective solution, that could be adopted by the international community. Yeh suggests a system designed to restore accountability in dysfunctional domestic criminal justice systems, by implementing a powerful Anticorruption Protocol to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (APUNCAC). This treaty would establish a body of United Nations (UN) inspectors to conduct investigations into allegations of corruption, create dedicated anti-corruption courts, implement aggressive measures to fight money laundering, and provide incentives for private parties to pursue civil actions when they have knowledge of corruption. Using the International Criminal Court (ICC) as precedent, Yeh argues that an international treaty is a promising approach for addressing the governmental impunity that prevails in developing nations—impunity that undermines efforts to reduce poverty, promote development, and restore human rights. This book would be of interest to students and scholars interested in international law, international criminal justice, and political science.
