The collection examines the ways in which the emerging interdisciplinary study of care provokes a reassessment of the connections and disjuncture between care and governance, ethics, and public, personal and professional identities. Evolving from a project coordinated by the Cambridge Socio-Legal Group, Spaces of Care brings together leading international scholars to articulate what we may consider to be a useful analytic of care. Lawyers, anthropologists, sociologists and criminologists reflect on specific aspects of conceptualising caring relations in ‘spaces’. These spaces include: communities of care and abandonment; self-care and kinship care; spaces as ‘gaps’ in care; the meanings of marketised care; and the ways in which care is constructed and constrained in different ways in venues such as homes, prisons, workplaces and virtual spaces.Common themes include temporality (historical specificity) and the dynamics of care across time and place; subjectivity (including different experiences of care); the economies of care (including the commodification of care; public and private manifestations of care; privatised ‘care’); disruptions of care (which generate vulnerabilities with regard to continuities of care); eligibility (those deemed to be deserving and undeserving of care); relationalities of care (collective and individual agency in caring relations, kinship care), and technologies and imaginaries of care (as in new notions of care forged by those in online virtual worlds such as Second Life).

There is a tension at the heart of family law and policy between the increasing influence of individual autonomy and the demands of caring for children. Individual autonomy envisages decisions made in one’s own best interests, whereas decisions around care are often made for the good of the family, and may conflict with the caregiver’s individual interests. Whereas individual autonomy valorises economic self-sufficiency, caregiving responsibilities constrain choice and conflict with paid work. This book explores this tension to consider how, given changing social trends, family law and policy should take account of caregiving responsibilities on parental separation. Crucially, it suggests that we need to rethink family law by placing care at its centre. This book draws on original empirical data to explore the experiences of parents in England and Wales, where the division of paid work and care is considered a choice, and Sweden, where parents are encouraged to work full-time, supported by wellfunded state childcare. This comparative perspective sheds light on whether the clash between the ideas of autonomy and care could be reconciled in a more gender equal society. The book argues that caregiving is hidden from, and undervalued by, law and policy in both jurisdictions, underscoring the need for the proposed new approach. The law needs to think more deeply about what it means to care, and how the care provided by parents differs. Anna Heenan outlines how family law might look different if the proposed framework, based on placing care at the heart of family law, is adopted.

What role do emotions and care for others play in the relational economy in which this marketplace is embedded?Against a background of rapid urbanisation and social change, this book analyses notions of exchange from the perspective of these women, demonstrating that what motivates their choices, and what gives them their agency, is a system of reciprocal care. Equally, by examining new tendencies in production and exchange which have been imposed as a result of colonial power, this ethnography makes proposals for agro-ecology as a solution to global food insecurity, showing the ways in which many small-scale farmers choose unsustainable methods due to economic challenges.Countering common western feminist perspectives - that to be responsible for social reproduction is symbolic of exploitation - Barnett-Naghshineh proposes that care for others remains a key route to prestige, influence, and recognition for women, and that embodied acts of care produce value in the broader structures of economic life. Through a discussion of educators and philosophers including Arendt, Foucault, Guattari, Patocka, Simondon, Stengers and Whitehead, Atkinson explores the ‘gift of otherness’ in relation to an ethico-politics of pedagogic practice and learning, including art education. He argues for pedagogical practices that facilitate and support each learner''s pathways through what is called a pedagogy of taking care. Atkinson not only critiques current educational policy but advocates possible futures of being, not dominated by the neoliberal tools of force and power.
