Spaces of Care - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Spaces of Care - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

The collection examines the ways in which the emerging interdisciplinary study of care provokes a reassessment of the connections and disjuncture between care and governance, ethics, and public, personal and professional identities. Evolving from a project coordinated by the Cambridge Socio-Legal Group, Spaces of Care brings together leading international scholars to articulate what we may consider to be a useful analytic of care. Lawyers, anthropologists, sociologists and criminologists reflect on specific aspects of conceptualising caring relations in ‘spaces’. These spaces include: communities of care and abandonment; self-care and kinship care; spaces as ‘gaps’ in care; the meanings of marketised care; and the ways in which care is constructed and constrained in different ways in venues such as homes, prisons, workplaces and virtual spaces.Common themes include temporality (historical specificity) and the dynamics of care across time and place; subjectivity (including different experiences of care); the economies of care (including the commodification of care; public and private manifestations of care; privatised ‘care’); disruptions of care (which generate vulnerabilities with regard to continuities of care); eligibility (those deemed to be deserving and undeserving of care); relationalities of care (collective and individual agency in caring relations, kinship care), and technologies and imaginaries of care (as in new notions of care forged by those in online virtual worlds such as Second Life).

Understanding Community Care - Ann Mcdonald - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Care-Based Methodologies - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Care-Based Methodologies - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Care-Based Methodologies reimagines relationships between researchers and youth participants in school-based research. The book calls attention to care-based methodologies as essential to qualitative and ethnographic research in schools, particularly when participants are youth from nondominant communities. While researchers come to schools seeking to understand youths’ lived experiences and become implicated in the quotidian rhythms of their lives, it is rare that they receive training on how to navigate the complex interpersonal dynamics and relationships that take shape during long-term school research. How can researchers ensure that they care for the wellbeing of youth, not just the stories and data collected from them? How do researchers maneuver the various roles they may come to play in youth’s lives over the course of, and beyond, a study with care? What happens when scholars transgress the traditional power dynamics of researcher-participant relationships to walk with youth in their research? This book illustrates the possibilities for conducting rigorous and responsible research that simultaneously improves our understanding of youth’s lives, cares for their wellbeing, and works toward dismantling the systems that oppress them. The editors of the volume offer an opening chapter that articulates how researchers can practice care-based methodologies with youth by centering transparency, reflexivity, reciprocity, curiosity, consent, and self-care. The chapters that follow draw from a range of qualitative and ethnographic studies to highlight how care mediates and informs the research process and offer concrete guidance for employing care-based methodologies in school-based studies with youth.

Justice and Profit in Health Care Law - Dr Sabrina Germain - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Autonomy, Care and Family Law - Anna Heenan - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Autonomy, Care and Family Law - Anna Heenan - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

There is a tension at the heart of family law and policy between the increasing influence of individual autonomy and the demands of caring for children. Individual autonomy envisages decisions made in one’s own best interests, whereas decisions around care are often made for the good of the family, and may conflict with the caregiver’s individual interests. Whereas individual autonomy valorises economic self-sufficiency, caregiving responsibilities constrain choice and conflict with paid work. This book explores this tension to consider how, given changing social trends, family law and policy should take account of caregiving responsibilities on parental separation. Crucially, it suggests that we need to rethink family law by placing care at its centre. This book draws on original empirical data to explore the experiences of parents in England and Wales, where the division of paid work and care is considered a choice, and Sweden, where parents are encouraged to work full-time, supported by wellfunded state childcare. This comparative perspective sheds light on whether the clash between the ideas of autonomy and care could be reconciled in a more gender equal society. The book argues that caregiving is hidden from, and undervalued by, law and policy in both jurisdictions, underscoring the need for the proposed new approach. The law needs to think more deeply about what it means to care, and how the care provided by parents differs. Anna Heenan outlines how family law might look different if the proposed framework, based on placing care at the heart of family law, is adopted.

Economies of Care - Olivia Barnett Naghshineh - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

In this major, open access intervention in feminist anthropology - which remains largely rooted in western feminist ideologies - Economies of Care examines emotional aspects of economic life in the marketplaces of Papua New Guinea; where market women’s labour is a nexus not only for gender relations, but also for wider spiritual, cosmological and reciprocal ones. What role do emotions and care for others play in the relational economy in which this marketplace is embedded?Against a background of rapid urbanisation and social change, this book analyses notions of exchange from the perspective of these women, demonstrating that what motivates their choices, and what gives them their agency, is a system of reciprocal care. Equally, by examining new tendencies in production and exchange which have been imposed as a result of colonial power, this ethnography makes proposals for agro-ecology as a solution to global food insecurity, showing the ways in which many small-scale farmers choose unsustainable methods due to economic challenges.Countering common western feminist perspectives - that to be responsible for social reproduction is symbolic of exploitation - Barnett-Naghshineh proposes that care for others remains a key route to prestige, influence, and recognition for women, and that embodied acts of care produce value in the broader structures of economic life. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the European Research Council.

Postdigital Performances of Care - Karen Savage - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Covid-19 has been described as a ‘digital pandemic’. But who might the characterisation of the pandemic as ‘digital’ leave behind? This timely book reconsiders the pandemic as ‘postdigital’, examining tensions between a growing postdigital attitude of disenchantment with digital technologies and the increasing reliance on adapted modes of online practice mid-lockdown in both performance-making and healthcare. What emerged amidst the pandemic restrictions was a theatre that was unable to show its face, instead adapting into a variety of ‘covid-safe’ remote forms of engagement, from ‘Zoom plays’ to self-generating experiences sent by post. This book explores the ways that both performances and healthcare practices found proxies for direct touch and face-to-face encounters, deconstructing the way that care and resilience were spectacularized by political actors online.Liam Jarvis and Karen Savage explore aspects of care in relation to technology, spectacle and facilitation, and how new modes of delivery and the repurposing of theatre spaces that were displaced amidst the mass migration online have been enabling as well as controversial. The variety of case studies assessed includes internet memes, online films, performances of everyday resilience through social media and participatory theatre productions, including Thaddeus Phillips’ Zoom Motel, Coney’s Telephone and Nightcap’s Handle with Care .
