Out of Earth

Out of Earth is a free musical exploration of the creation mythology from Ovid's "Metamorphoses". Much like in other mythologies, it describes the journey of the human race from a once golden age through its destruction by the great flood culminating in its rebirth by the Earth. In the course of its composition, the music began to emerge from these images and then grew beyond them. Out of Earth was commissioned by the Aulos Wind Orchestra, Kriens (CH) and was first performed in October 2015 under the direction of José Rafael Pascual Vilaplana.

This work was commissioned by the Concordia wind band and the Écho male choir, based in Miège (Valais, Switzerland), to mark their respective centenaries. The piece is a sanguine sounding work entirely based upon variations in several keys of a main hymn. This creates a festive and ‘sprituoso’ atmosphere throughout this impressive, highly colourful and energetic work. The Book of Genesis

Noah’s Ark (1997) made its way through the international band scene and turned Bert Appermont into a renowned star whose music is now performed and recorded throughout the world. Fascinated by stories and sagas, he decided to combine different biblical stories into The Book of Genesis. In three movements - ‘The Creation’, ‘Cain & Abel’ and ‘Babel’ - these stories are depicted musically. Ensembles could use one standalone movement or multiple parts of the work in either a competition a concert; a most impressive choice sure to stand out from the crowd.

D'Artagnan

D’Artagnan, a short new work for flexible youth band is the follow-up to a previous piece from the same series – The Three Musketeers. Other Lives

Other Lives is works perfectly for a competition but can also be programmed as concert work. The dark chords at the beginning of the piece are derived from “Der Doppelgänger”, one of Franz Schubert’s late songs. After a short development the music begins to accelerate and find its own shape, gradually moving away from the introduction. The entire first part, “Rage”, has an intensely agitated character. The ensuing “Reflection” turns back to the initial chord progression, before a series of interspersing solos explore time and space at a slower pace. After another musical surge, the music is brought close to silence and then gives way to the third part, “Redemption”.Here, a widely spaced sound field contains a remote allusion to another work by Schubert “Rückblick”. After this farewell, an abstract musical transformation triggers an emotional change, as the initial motifs are now presented in their inversed form in order to create a much brighter harmonic landscape. Moreover, in the last part of the piece, “Renewal”, the grim, tense atmosphere of the first part is transformed into a great energy. Other Lives was commissioned by the Valaisia Brass Band.

Friendly Takeover was composed for the 2016 Swiss Wind Band Convention in Montreux. In this three movement piece the composer experiments with lyrical motives combined with rhythmical pulses in different meters throughout the piece. In the finale, the musical scene is taken over completely by groove-based rhythms. This takeover, however, is of a friendly nature, as the various beats are not being conceived as rivals of the lyrical motives, but are rather supposed to infuse energy and vitality to the latter. Balkan Dance

Folk music from the Balkans region has always been celebrated for its richness and resonance. Its virtuosity and intermittent rhythmic irregularity make this music unique and very lively. These features make up part of Balkan Dance, thus combining traditional music with rock. In the first part, the theme is presented and the orchestration develops. Modulations also occur and each orchestral section is brought to the forefront. The next part begins with irregular rhythms, before giving way to the many soloists in the bands. The introductory theme returns, at first sung, and then concludes the dance in a fortissimo tutti. This piece will delight your audience and challenge your band!
