The BR modernisation plan of 1955 envisaged the replacement of steam traction with diesel and electric locos by around 1975. Chief among the requirements was a loco more powerful than the 2,000-hp locos that had been produced before then.The Sulzer Company in Switzerland were able to provide an engine of 2,300 hp, which was used in the Class 44. An updated 2,500-hp version was used in classes 45 and 46. There were 127 of these locos built at Crewe and Derby between 1960 and 1962, but they were overweight so a lighter co-design that would become Class 47 was developed using an uprated Sulzer engine producing 2,750 hp. A total of 512 of these were built between 1962 and 1966.This book of mostly unpublished colour photographs by George Woods shows the locos in service from 1966 to 2019, working many different types of traffic throughout the BR system.

The Air Force Reserve was the federally organised reserve component of the United States Air Force. AFRES was organised into three Numbered Air Forces: 4th Air Force and 14th Air Force controlled units that would have been gained by Military Airlift Command if mobilised, while 10th Air Force controlled units that would have been gained by Tactical Air Command and Strategic Air Command. Consequently, AFRES operated a highly diverse fleet of aircraft types, from the AC-130 Spectre and HH-3E Jolly Green Giant, through the F-4 Phantom II and A-10 Thunderbolt II, to the KC-135 Stratotanker, C-130 Hercules and C-5 Galaxy. AFRES had traditionally been the recipient of older hand-me-down equipment. In November 1914, Hearts led the Scottish First Division. In the middle of a debate about the morality of continuing professional football during the First World War and a campaign to shame footballers into joining up, eleven Hearts players enlisted in Sir George McCrae’s battalion on 25 November. Hearts supporters and players and supporters from myriad other clubs flocked to join as well. Officially known as 16th Royal Scots, this unit was the first to be described as a footballers’ battalion. On 1 July 1916, 15th and 16th Royal Scots attacked near the village of Contalmaison in the Somme Valley. Three Hearts players would die that day; seven would be killed in total during the war, and many more would be wounded. Class 43 locomotives were introduced to British Rail from 1976 onwards and eventually numbered 197 in total. In Scotland, they were initially allocated to Craigentinny Depot in Edinburgh and later to Inverness and in recent years to Cadder Depot, near Glasgow. They became known as High Speed Trains, or HSTs, and initially ran on the east coast route between Edinburgh and London King’s Cross. In later years, the fleet spread their wings to many other parts of Scotland and even worked charters to Fort William and Stranraer. A number of the locos were also upgraded at Crewe Works in the mid-1990s and re-fitted with Mirrlees Blackstone engines which were more environmentally friendly. The modern London borough of Southwark was an amalgamation of the old boroughs of Southwark, Bermondsey and Camberwell in 1965. Each of these old boroughs has their own unique Blitz stories – some tragic, some extremely sad and some even funny.On that first raid, Bermondsey’s own Surrey Docks was one of the intended targets for the Luftwaffe. Twelve hours later, Surrey Docks was a smouldering ruin with many of its inhabitants made homeless, jobless, and others injured or killed.
