The Cambridge to King's Lynn Line - Mike Beckett - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Winter 1984/5 – the future for the Cambridge–King’s Lynn ‘Fen Line’ looked bleak. British Rail had singled long track sections. There had been closure talk.Yet, following a vigorous three year political and technical campaign, government approval for its electrification was granted in February 1989. Construction work was drawn out and suffered setbacks, so it wasn’t until August 1992 that electric trains finally started operating on the 41-mile-long line. At first passengers were fairly thin on the ground, but as the years progressed growth (fuelled by commuting into Cambridge and, to a lesser extent, London) meant trains gradually became very overcrowded. Extensive works to upgrade the line to take longer trains have now come on stream. As well as a new Cambridge North, there are well-developed plans for other new stations.Concentrating mainly north of Cambridge, this book illustrates the trains that run from Kings Cross and Liverpool Street to Ely and King’s Lynn via Cambridge, many of the types and liveries seen, and the extensive infrastructure works that have taken place over the last thirty-or-so years.Mike Beckett was a strategic planner at King’s Lynn & West Norfolk Borough Council at the time of the electrification campaign. With a personal as well as professional interest in transport, he maintains a photographic record of the line’s many changes and has drawn on his collection to produce this book.

The Mythology of the 'Princes in the Tower' - John Ashdown Hill - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

When did the term ‘Princes in the Tower’ come into usage, who invented it, and to whom did it refer? To the general public the term is synonymous with the supposedly murdered boy King Edward V and his younger brother Richard, Duke of York, sons of Edward IV. But were those boys genuinely held against their will in the Tower? Would their mother, Elizabeth Widville, have released her son Richard from sanctuary with her if she believed she would be putting his life in danger? The children of Edward IV were declared bastards in 1483 and Richard, Duke of Gloucester, was offered the throne. But after Bosworth, in order to marry their sister Elizabeth of York, Henry VII needed to make her legitimate again. If the boys were alive at that time then Edward V would once again have become the rightful king.Following the discovery of some bones in the Tower in 1674 they were interred in a marble urn in Westminster Abbey as the remains of the two sons of Edward IV. What evidence exists, or existed at the time, to prove these indeed were the remains of two fifteenth-century male children? What did the 1933 urn opening reveal?John Ashdown-Hill is uniquely placed to answer these questions. By working with geneticists and scientists, and exploring the mtDNA haplogroup of the living all-female-line collateral descendant of the brothers, he questions the orthodoxy and strips away the myths.

Southwark in the Blitz - Neil Bright - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The modern London borough of Southwark was an amalgamation of the old boroughs of Southwark, Bermondsey and Camberwell in 1965. Each of these old boroughs has their own unique Blitz stories – some tragic, some extremely sad and some even funny. On that first raid, Bermondsey’s own Surrey Docks was one of the intended targets for the Luftwaffe. Twelve hours later, Surrey Docks was a smouldering ruin with many of its inhabitants made homeless, jobless, and others injured or killed. On 7 September, it was also the scene of several extremely brave Civil Defence actions resulting in gallantry awards. On the night of 7/8 September 1940, nearly 150 of the three boroughs’ citizens had been killed. This was the start of what became known as the ‘Night Blitz’, lasting through to May 1941. At the end of this period, this total had risen to nearly 2,000. Prior to the start of the Night Blitz, young boys had been marvelling at the dogfights over North Kent between the RAF and the Luftwaffe. Now this was a different war; the homes and streets of London were the new front line. With their ‘never surrender’ attitude, the population were the new front-line troops.Through the eyes and words of the three borough’s inhabitants and local research, this book takes the reader through the Night Blitz, the Nuisance Raids, the Baby Blitz and the V-Weapon attacks. It is also a testament to those who ‘endured’ in the old boroughs of Southwark.
